BOX OFFICE: IRON MAN 3 Holds On To #1 Despite Competition From THE GREAT GATSBY

Iron Man 3 only just managed to stay in the top spot on Friday after Warner Bros.' The Great Gatsby opened across North America, but the Marvel Studios threequel is expected to still reign supreme by the end of this weekend. Hit the jump for details!

Warner Bros. must be feeling very pleased with themselves this weekend after The Great Gatsby took an admirable $19.4 million after opening late on Thursday. Iron Man 3 was only slightly ahead with $19.7 million, a 72% drop from last Friday's huge opening. The Baz Luhrmann helmed take on the classic F. Scott Fitzgerald 1925 novel is expected to gross $53 million in its first weekend, although Mother's Day tomorrow may end up giving it a slight boost. Regardless, this still won't be enough to topple Iron Man 3 as the Shane Black helmed threequel is expected to end up with upwards of $67 million over by close of business on Sunday. That's a 62% drop from last week, but a very solid hold. As we reported yesterday, the movie is well on its way to crossing the $900 million mark today, despite Star Trek Into Darkness opening in key territories like the UK. What are you guys planning on checking out on the big screen this weekend?

Marvel Studios’ Iron Man 3 pits brash-but-brilliant industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds. When Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy’s hands, he embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible. This journey, at every turn, will test his mettle. With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him. As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man?

Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark/Iron Man
Ben Kingsley as The Mandarin
Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper Potts
Don Cheadle as Rhodey/War Machine
Guy Pearce as Aldrich Killian
Rebecca Hall as Dr. Maya Hansen
Ashley Hamilton as Jack Taggert
James Badge Dale as Eric Savin
Jon Favreau as Happy Hogan

well i've seen iron man 3,so it'll be more than likely star trek into darkness.
HellsHammer - 5/11/2013, 9:14 AM
Gatsby Sucked!
Omarvls - 5/11/2013, 9:22 AM
By Next Weekend Iron Man 3 will be the 2nd biggest Comicbookmovie of all time passing The Dark Knight
BIG TIME WIN for Marvel (even though I hated the Mandarin stunt they pulled)
PeterDarker121 - 5/11/2013, 9:22 AM
@SotoJuice That's a 62% drop....and although that's STILL not good, get yer facts straight.
Priest - 5/11/2013, 9:24 AM
Iron Man 3 will make a billion dollars. The general public liked it. Accept it. Those are the facts. It doesn't matter if YOU don't like it, facts won't change.
AmazingFantasy - 5/11/2013, 9:26 AM
It sucked, face it.

batman1216 - 5/11/2013, 9:28 AM
In America Ironman 3 is not that big of a deal and isn't performing much better then the 2nd. No where near Avengers, TDK or TDKR. Around the world audiences are really make its money. Just like Transformers actually.
Priest - 5/11/2013, 9:29 AM
Man of Steel will probably be a good movie, but it is highly doubtful that it will have the same box office success as Iron Man 3.

But it might still have enough of a success for WB to green light a DC movie universe...based on Marvel's modus operandi.
LexHairFight - 5/11/2013, 9:29 AM
A 62% drop would be just as big Rises, pretty typical for a blockbuster.
thewonderer - 5/11/2013, 9:29 AM
How about we leave it at this fanboys?

Iron Man 3 and The Dark Knight Rises are the only at least decent-good (maybe better depending on you) third entries in a CBM franchise.
batman1216 - 5/11/2013, 9:29 AM
By the way I actually liked Ironman 3 more then all the Marvel movies except Ironman 1. Even the Avengers, the second most overrated movie in history after Avatar. Titanic was actually a classic no matter what anyone says.
Priest - 5/11/2013, 9:31 AM
I believe that some people that post on this website must be smoking crack.
PeterDarker121 - 5/11/2013, 9:31 AM
By the way, I've seen Iron Man 3 THREE times, and I firmly believe that the 'Mandarin Twist' is HIGHLY overrated.

Right NOW, it's competing with 'The Dark Knight' and the first 'Incredible Hulk' TV-Movie for the best comic to screen adaptation of all time for me, and people need to recognize and take a more reflective look as to WHY the twist was done in the FIRST place and if it works in the long run of the MCU. It does for me.

The Mandarin MAY be Tony's arch-nemesis in the comics, but that says nothing of his inherent lameness, his cream-of-the-crop status above a pathetic rogues' gallery in the first place and the fact that changing him from a ridiculous childhood stereotype to a 2013 reflective model isn't sitting well with our insular comic fans.
batman1216 - 5/11/2013, 9:32 AM
@ MarvelLight Yea, but Rises made a shitload more on weekdays.
kevberg - 5/11/2013, 9:34 AM
I'll see it again because i really dug the ending battle and seeing the Silver Centurion armor and like the humor,...

But I still say the Mandarin Twist was a egregious mistake and disrespectful to the fans.
Omarvls - 5/11/2013, 9:35 AM
@BreaktheSpell you could be right I can't wait for MOS
but please don't tell me your a DC only dude
TheAcidSkull - 5/11/2013, 9:35 AM
Bunch of Babies, the Movie Was awesome.
LexHairFight - 5/11/2013, 9:38 AM
@batman 1216 -

Probably, the kids are still in school.
Priest - 5/11/2013, 9:38 AM
I would say that, according to our capitalist system, how much money you have IS a very good way to measure success.

If a movie is making vast amounts of money, it means that people like it enough to go see it more than once and tell others to go see it. bear in mind, the vast majority of the audience is looking for entertainment, not thoughtful fine arts cinema. Yes, it might be a sign of the decline of western civilization, but it is what it is.
knighted - 5/11/2013, 9:42 AM
Had a friend go see it last night and he was disappointed. Actually i don't know anyone outside the internet who really loved it. Im3 wasn't the best superhero movie but not the worst.
thewonderer - 5/11/2013, 9:43 AM
Do your research Racist, I don't troll Marvel articles. I'll state my opinions on them though. Learn the difference. Not a fan of Shit Lantern or even V for Vendetta for that matter.
loki668 - 5/11/2013, 9:44 AM
It's sad that some so-called "fans" have become so jaded and spoiled by these comic book movies that they have to bash one side as "inferior" just so that they can try and validate their own existence, as if their chosen company's success somehow relates to their own. It's becoming so tragically ignorant that you can't go to the comment section of either company without some dickhole trolling. I don't mean the humorous jokes or personal opinions, I mean the shiftless twats, with no life, who spoil films and say the same thing over and over in each thread as if we are not already aware of their bias. It's already evident here and you can't even comment on enjoying the trailer for MoS without some shit-twit trolling for attention. We get it, you read Rotten Tomatoes and the rag sheets to try and justify your opinion with pointless percentages. You quote dollar amounts as if you're getting a cut. Whoopity-diddilee-[frick]ity-doo! You can quote statistics. Bravo. Now go tell you parents that they don't give you enough attention so that you don't have annoy random strangers in your attempt to get it.
kevberg - 5/11/2013, 9:48 AM
BTW, I called it last week that there would be a huge word of mouth and the movie would drop.

Please Feige, get back to the plan and stop disregarding the characters.

In the Comics, Tony Stark was wounded with shrapnel in his heart and he created the Armor to save him...whether its the vietnam war or Afghanistan the basic idea was the same....The Same thing goes with the Mandarin. The Idea is/ should be the same.

MJPETTY7 - 5/11/2013, 9:48 AM
I saw The Great Gatsby, it was actually really good. I'm still disappointed in Iron Man 3, so I'd probably say I liked Gatsby more, just because I got exactly what I was told I was going to get.
kevberg - 5/11/2013, 9:51 AM

Lameness... you mean like a guy in Rhino suit that can't take it off or Roy Orbison w/ tentacles?
LexHairFight - 5/11/2013, 9:52 AM
kevberg -

62% is typical, nothing huge about it.
loki668 - 5/11/2013, 9:52 AM

Would you say that Gatsby was (wait for it)........great?
Ahh............that's better. It's always good to get a pun out of the way.
AgentZero - 5/11/2013, 9:54 AM

You read my mind on that last paragraph.
Mandarin was so lame to begin with that I'm glad that they took a different approach with him.

It's like kryptonite in a Superman story. We all know it's going to be boring and someone else will have to step up and help Supes and all that slow and boring stuff that goes with it. Still some fans want to see it.

kevberg - 5/11/2013, 9:55 AM
@marvel Light

its 72% and most movies usually drop, at least blockbusters with staying power, only drop 40-50% range
GodzillaKart - 5/11/2013, 10:00 AM
Great movie. Glad it's making money.
RobbieDigital - 5/11/2013, 10:01 AM
I think you guys underestimate the power of women at the box office......everybody I know has already seen Iron Man 3.....thats the bad thing with HUGE opening weekends...that usually means everyone is going to see it in those 3 days....then a huge drop the next weekend.

In college most of the girls all had Moulin Rouge in their was in their permanent rotation of movies to watch multiple times a week.....I figured "Gatsby" was going to show it has a huge soundtrack with a lot of todays "hot' artists.....(not agreeing here just saying)

Plus the girls love Leo.....he's like Batman to women....
marvel72 - 5/11/2013, 10:02 AM
iron man 3 was good, but it could of been better.

can't wait to own the blu-ray.
LexHairFight - 5/11/2013, 10:02 AM
Kevberg -

The first Friday is typically the largest single day and in the second weekend Saturday is the big day - so the percentage will improve. It'll probably do about $25-$30mm tonight and another 20 tomorrow.

As much as you hope for the big drop off, it's not going to happen - at least not to the level it will cause a difference for you. The deciding factor will be Star Trek which should provide strong competition.
kevberg - 5/11/2013, 10:03 AM
My Bad,...Friday was 72% drop..Youre right it was 62% ..but 62 is not typical compared to 40-50% range and should at least concern them moving forward on IRON MAN sequels.

I saw Avengers 4 times in theater...I'm not even sure i wanna see IM3 a second time ( I will, but a third is not likely ) . I know im not the only fan that feel s that way.

I only saw TDKR twice because I didnt want the Aurora tragedy to unfairly affect that movie, But It was utter crap on film. I didnt even by the Blu-Ray.

I want both companies to do well, but they also gotta deliver the goods. That simple.
LexHairFight - 5/11/2013, 10:06 AM
Movies who have 40-50% drops usually don't have big openings. I think a fair comparison is Rises sine they are both 3's, they are only a year apart and both were a little conflicting to us who live in this little bubble.

I think internationally IM3 will earn more, but domestically Rises will - mostly because Star Trek will provide competition that Rises didn't have.

Avengers was the exception, not a good comparison for this.
UrbanTheEmcee - 5/11/2013, 10:08 AM
Money grossed doesn't mean sh*t. If Green Lantern grossed 800 mill it would still be bad film. Alice in Wonderland grossed over a billion. While IM3 wasn't a bad film, it's not deserving of the money it's making right now. My opinion has nothing to do with the Mandarin twist, but the whole plot itself. If Tony had a million suits underground, why was he stranded in Tennessee trying to repair one? Why did he travel to Miami in a car? Why haven't any of these IM movies produced a memorable villain? I liked how funny drunk Ben Kingsley was, but Aldrich Killian sucked balls. Tony was never actually Ironman in this movie, unless you call jumping from suit to suit in the final act being Ironman, or controlling a suit via headset being Ironman, they should've just called this movie Tony Stark. This drastic disconnection with the previous Ironman films sucked to. A pop song intro, a 70's style opening credits, the whole Shane Blackness feel it had, I could go on and on. This movie was a letdown, and only hardcore fanboys will convince themselves other wise. I don't care what the general public of 3 year olds, old women, and potheads think, this movie is a 6/10 at best.

Rant Over.
kevberg - 5/11/2013, 10:11 AM
@marvel Light
First , PREDICTED it would have a big drop...I didn't say I WANTED it to.

reason I PREDICTED it was because, even though i know a good chunk of the public doesnt know who Mandarin is to Iron Man, There is the fan base that DOES.

the Same base that knew who that Big Purple guy in gold that was at the end of Avengers, are same ones who might get pissed that tonys Main Baddie is nothing but a drunk actor. They're the same ones who will take their kids or girl friends or wives. And instead of Maybe dragging them along again because of how cool Marvel had The Stones to Put Thanos at the end, they'll be the same ones that decide they may not like the twist, and not go again.

Second You dont know Jack if you think Im rooting AGAINST Marvel.
ThePowerCosmic - 5/11/2013, 10:13 AM
Going to see IM3 again this weekend. Loved it.

I absolutely loved the Mandarin twist and thought it was far more interesting and original than just adapting that lame stereotype comic character as he was. I was far more dissapointed at the one character spitting fire and that actually was comic accurate.

All in all we have to admit. People love Iron Man and RDJ. It is a winning combination. However you look at it this film is mega successful and will cross the billion dollar mark with ease.
rocky - 5/11/2013, 10:13 AM
IM3 was [frick]ing great

Friday numbers are skewed because Gatsby counts thursday nights shows. IM3 cause it was already out counts only Friday

IM3 will pull ahead easily.
IM3 has an A cinemascore
Gatsby a B
PeterDarker121 - 5/11/2013, 10:14 AM
THERE ya go, @Kevberg. Stan WASN'T PERFECT, and a LOT of the storylines he called 'shotgun' on weren't necessarily literary perfect nor pristine.

I urge all who who haven't seen the Kenneth Johnson version of the Hulk's origin to DO so. What Stan MISSED in HIS version (God Bless him) is the personal responsiblity angle that made Spidey's origin so heartfelt. In KJ's vision, Banner was a dude with underlaying anger issues ANYWAY (as verbally stated in The Avengers) caused his own tragedy. MUCH more dramatic and sensible than Stan's 'Gamma Bomb' "accident".

IM3 continues this tradition, esp during the scene when during a nightmare, one of Tony's 'subconscious' "Marks" attacks Pepper because she's getting too "close" to him.

That's some deep sh88, people...and it's all about 10 pieces of RING jewelery for you??
