BOX OFFICE: Marvel Studios' IRON MAN 3 Now Tracking For $160M Opening Weekend In US

A couple of weeks ago, it has been revealed that the Shane Black-directed film Iron Man 3 was on track for a $125 million debut in US, and now as we are getting closer to the official release date, that number just got a lot bigger. More after the jump...

The Walt Disney & Marvel Studios' picture directed by Shane Black is set for a monster debut in its opening weekend in US, starting May 3rd. A few week ago, tracking suggested a $125 million bow, but according to The Wrap, that number just went up. With little over a week until Iron Man 3 is released in North America, the film is now tracking at $160M opening weekend:

"Box-office tracking on ’Iron Man 3’ is now on target for a whopping $160 million debut in the U.S. That the Marvel superhero movie would be a blockbuster and the year's biggest opener to date has been a given for months, but analysts' expectations for its domestic debut have spiked ahead of this week's international rollout. ’Iron Man 3’ opens in Australia, France, Italy and eight other countries on Wednesday and in roughly 25 more foreign markets over the weekend. It will debut in China on the same day it does in the U.S., Disney said Wednesday."

Right now, everything is possible as far as box office goes for Iron Man 3. The Avengers' success is still very much in the air, and people are definitely looking forward to Phase Two of Marvel Cinematic Universe. Stay tuned next week for box office updates.

Starring Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Guy Pearce, Rebecca Hall, Stephanie Szostak, James Badge Dale with Jon Favreau and Ben Kingsley, Iron Man 3 is directed by Shane Black from a screenplay by Drew Pearce and Shane Black. The film is set for May 3, 2013 release.

@ theyoungman

it maybe more money for other people, but the more money these movies make the more comic book movies we get.

so everyone is a winner.

@Jazza815: If you want to avoid spoilers, this is not the place to be.

Dont be so sure.

RDJ may not say it while this is in theaters but he has to want to move on. Hes played Stark in four films since '08.

Theres nothing left for him to do with the character. And the Demon in a Bottle story is small potatoes in 2013. Alcoholic stories are better left to the E! True Hollywood stories and country music.

Marvel would rather use him in Avengers than another Iron Man.

Already picked up my Imax seats for Friday!!
GeekyCheekyChic - 4/24/2013, 11:50 AM
wondering how they got that number since you can't even buy tickets from an AMC or a Regal or Cinemark theater in person or online because of the dispute. Usually those tracking numbers are based on pre-sell....
Either way I have my tix to an AMC and hopefully I'll get to use them.

$160M even with AMC and Regal halting ticket sales for the movie? WOW!
JDUKE25 - 4/24/2013, 12:04 PM
I think it will end up with around $815 million when it's over.
marvel72 - 4/24/2013, 12:05 PM
@ theyoungman

of course got plenty coming but if they started performing like green lantern $200 million budget $219 million gross they'd soon start drying up.
ParisSun - 4/24/2013, 12:07 PM
Maybe they throw money at RDJ to appear in Avengers 2 and less of a role in Avenger 3. But I wonder what actor could they bring in who would have the same gravitas. I would love to see Keifer Sutherland or Viggo Mortensen in a Marvel role.
Brainiac13 - 4/24/2013, 12:09 PM
I'm going 2 c it tomorrow and have to go into the next town as we don't have a cinema in our town.

LexHairFight - 4/24/2013, 1:42 PM
They probably had it tracking over $250mm, but then someone in accounting alerted them on Future Past's campaign so they scale it back.
PurpleMonkey - 4/24/2013, 1:42 PM

UltimateHunt - 4/24/2013, 1:47 PM
Highest grossing film of the year no doubt.
IronMan 3 1, 200, 000, 000

Star Trek, Hobbit 2, Pacific Rim, Hunger Games 2, and Men of Steel i think will do good too from about 600, 000, 000 - 850, 000, 000
FilmsFan - 4/24/2013, 1:52 PM
Going to see it tomorrow... In 3D!
Very Excited... to see MAN OF STEEL trailer with it... As well!

Not sure what's more exciting to me NOW; IRON MAN 3 or the MOS trailer with it!

Whatever; I'm pumped now for Tony Stark!!
