COMICS: Tony Stark Going Dark For SUPERIOR IRON MAN Is A Bit Extremis

Are you someone that detests change? Well, if you're also a Marvel Comics fan then you may not be happy to see all the changes that Thor, Captain America and Iron Man are currently going through. Come find out about Superior Iron Man.

Beginning in November, Superior Iron Man will take the place of Marvel's Iron Man comic book for an indefinite run, with Stark relocating to the City by the Bay. The storyline has Stark releasing a mobile app — a version of his Extremis tech that was largely the basis of the film Iron Man 2 — which offers users the promise of beauty, perfection ... and possibly immortality. Those things will, of course, come at a terrible price — and throw Stark's status as one of the good guys into question. In fact, Stark's mad-genius move will pit him against Daredevil, also a recent transplant to San Francisco, as the "Man Without Fear" won't take kindly to Stark's vision.

Marvel's new comic, Superior Iron Man, will debut this November. It will be written by Tom Taylor and illustrated by Yildray Cinar. New details regarding this new series were provided to Mashable by Marvel editor-in-chief Axel Alonso.

"Yes, this is Tony," Alonso said. "What you're seeing in Superior Iron Man is a Tony Stark who’s seen both his worst and best impulses all let loose. It is Tony, but he’s going to be in a zone now where he’s never been. He's more ambitious, cunning, egotistical ... all of those quantities are unharnessed. He has a vision for the world. I like to think his position is defensible — controversial, but defensible."

He's got a little diamond on his head like The Vision.

Is this supposed to be metallic armour or white? I can't tell. Very Tron-tastic though. I'm wondering more and more lately though if Marvel is actually broken.

I think it is. The house of ideas seems very trite in recent months. I think they need a new editorial team. Someone who is more concerned with good story telling and not knee-jerk headline grabbing.

Looks like Marvel is preparing for Avengers 2.

too much change in a short period of time might backfire
Haff - 7/17/2014, 2:22 AM
I like the sound of this.

interesting to see a change in writers. Gillen is great but he's always been a really bad match for Iron Man.
it's amazing he's been on it for so long, i have the feeling the sales must've been pretty low for his whole run. great writer tho.

what would a good Iron Man book even be like? i don't even know. i don't think i've ever known.

@jimoakley666 - this isn't really that big of a thing right? i think you're exaggerating a little. maybe i exaggerate the good that Marvel is putting out right now, but here's a list of titles, that i think this last year have been good...
Superior Spider-Man
Ultimate Spider-Man
New Avengers
Super Foes of Spider-Man
this little Warren Moon Knight run
Young Avengers (Kieron Gillen/Jamie McKelvie!!!!!)
Loki Agents of Asgard
Secret Avengers (Nick Spencer, last year's run)
Uncanny X-Men
FF (Fraction and Allred's title)
Journey Into Mystery (Immoen/Schitti)
Fearless Defenders
All New X-Factor

ones that have promise or are iffy
Silver Surfer
that new Iron Fist
new Electra
the new Ghost Rider
Uncanny Avengers

especially the first list, u didn't like any of that stuff?
this headline thing just came around this week, how have they been running around grabbing headlines? where has this been happening? what actual things are u talking about?
Darthzilla - 7/17/2014, 2:32 AM

Woman to become Thor, Falcon to become Cap, Trevor to become Iron Man?

Call me a conspiracy theorist, but I think there's a conspiracy to gradually change fictional superheroes so that they aren't so moral and ethical. The militaries of the real world will seem less sinister in comparison if all fictional heroes aren't much better. Power corrupts, and those tightening in on absolute power are making it safe to clamp down more. They figure, "Why not? We can." Money is power, is money, is power, until we as a species can ever rise above it.

Marvel still has some nice books. At least it ain't a 90s rehash like New 52
HeroWithAThousandFaces - 7/17/2014, 2:44 AM
I'm all for change but Marvel Comics just reeks of desperation right now. Just don't change Daredevil or Hawkeye.

What is with the Superior line of comics turning heroes into assholes? First Doc Ock became Peter Parker, now Tony Stark is going to become a more evil version of himself?

They really don't make comics like they used to. What Iron Man fan would want this? The story sounds very out of character for Tony Stark.
ThedamnBatman - 7/17/2014, 2:59 AM
I gotta say I really dig the story that they're going for
pepe - 7/17/2014, 3:12 AM
Lame... I'll stop reading Marvel
NitPicker - 7/17/2014, 3:16 AM

Apparently people like that kind of thing. During the Civil War comics, Stark was being evil and an asshole and acting out character, but then I read tons of posts where people comment on how much they like Civil War. Maybe Marvel saw that as justification for making these changes.
dellamorte1872 - 7/17/2014, 3:18 AM
Is it all white? It does give off that tron vibe
dellamorte1872 - 7/17/2014, 3:18 AM
I don't really like this idea
mgeoff88 - 7/17/2014, 3:19 AM
There are essentially turning Tony Stark into Aldrich Killian from IM3...

This guy...

Really? He was one of the worse parts of IM3.
ShelfPorn - 7/17/2014, 3:25 AM
None of this appeals to me. If you want to make a change that is actually cool, take Tony Stark back to his plain old iron suit days. Extremis is stupid. Iron Man is cool because he's a dude in an armored suit, everything else is just weird and not cool.
mgeoff88 - 7/17/2014, 3:38 AM
@NitPicker The Civil War story arc is much different from this. A lot of the characters were acting out of sorts, because the conflict wasn't black and white, it was a gray area that caused heroes to be divided into two opposing sides.

It seems like the writers at Marvel thought it would be a good idea to take inspiration from IM3 with this series. Personally, I didn't care for IM3. IM2 is better than IM3. At least in my opinion.
Bomki - 7/17/2014, 3:44 AM
Has anybody else seen that "What if Age of Ultron" has been teasing pretty all those changes? Another person takes the mantle of Captain America, a worthy woman Thor, a "different" Iron man... I'm curious what's next
NitPicker - 7/17/2014, 3:52 AM

He made an evil cyborg clone of Thor.

He sent The Thunderbolts after Spider-Man. AFTER he convinced him to reveal his secret identity on national TV.

He set up a prison in the Negative Zone for heroes who wouldn't comply.

He was written way out of character even for that kind of story, and people liked it.
damntree - 7/17/2014, 3:59 AM
Oh no! Watch out Iron Man, it's Daredevil! Lol, please.
TheGambitFreak - 7/17/2014, 4:05 AM
I'm all for changes, hell yes, bring it on! I grew up during the explosion that was "What If?" comics, so I'm comfortable seeing new stuff. But what I hate is when they change it for no reason and do something stupid with it. Which Marvel has a track record of... A Mexican/Black homosexual adolescent Spider-Man, Doc Ock taking over Spidey, taking away Wolverine's healing factor, etc.
FrankBerzerk - 7/17/2014, 4:09 AM

iam an iron man fan , i read like 80% of his appearance
and i want it
marvel72 - 7/17/2014, 4:10 AM
since the launch of marvel now iron man i have found it hard to get into his comic,i can read the avengers titles but his solo outings are just not interesting enough.
NovaCorpsFan - 7/17/2014, 4:11 AM
Hurry up and make this whole Marvel NOW! shit redundant and non-canon.
mgeoff88 - 7/17/2014, 4:26 AM
@NitPicker Seeing all those examples listed together, you make a good point. I like my heroes to actually act like heroes. I hated the Superior Spider-Man. I know I'm going to hate this too.

@FrankBerzerk Well, that's good you're interested in picking this up. Personally, I'm going to pass.

TheGreenBastard - 7/17/2014, 4:28 AM
Uhhhhhh....wasn't extremis used in IM3 not IM2? Proof reading is a dead art.
TheGreenBastard - 7/17/2014, 4:29 AM
I don't think Miles Morales is gay....I believe that was just a rumor.
NitPicker - 7/17/2014, 4:49 AM

"I like my heroes to actually act like heroes."

Me too. I really think it would be better in the long run for if they just made some new characters instead of making these types of radical changes to existing characters.
ALmazing - 7/17/2014, 4:53 AM
I'm coll with this...Change...

Mastyrwerk - 7/17/2014, 5:01 AM
Movies influencing the comics much?

C'mon guys.

"I like my heroes to actually act like heroes."

EhMaybeSays - 7/17/2014, 5:17 AM
It's so sad when even the New 52 books look better than Marvel's now.
dethpillow - 7/17/2014, 5:23 AM
@Mastyrwerk - i know right? SMH.

SHIELD exists, MODOK's one of their agents,
Mystique's been impersonating Dazzler as an agent of shield and sucking the mutant growth hormone out of an unconscious Dazzler that she keeps back on her crime island.

white Nick Fury is back as a star in a major event,

Thor's a woman,

Cap is Falcon,

and now this weird Iron Man stuff, and before that Tony found out he had a brother named Arno Stark who has to live in a bed for some reason.

Scott Lang was recently heading up a replacement version of the Fantastic Four,
with Medusa, Darla Deering and She-Hulk.

Doc Ock was living in Spider-Man's body, but now Peter's back and fighting that white guy Electro.

DOFP happened 30 years ago,

Cap's been living in another dimension for 12 years and came back and the daughter of Zola is sleeping on his couch and now he's an old man.

Hawkeye is managing an apartment building and fending off the tracksuit bros,

Loki is dealing with some crazy older version of himself that is using future information of past events to go back in time and stage those same events.

Avengers are dealing with space time incursions between earth and other versions of earth and having to prepare to possibly destroy a whole world in order to keep their world in reality. this is all cloaked under the veil of Babylonian mythology and strange time travel involving AIM, the Mindless Ones, and beings that are gods of a higher level than Celestials, and Black Swan too.

the young X-Men were brought into the future, and now they're stuck here, so there's doubles of Jean, Angel, Beast and Iceman running around. and young Scott's in space with his dad. plus the future X-Men keep coming back and being creepy.

plus Red Skull is running around with Prof X's brain chopped out and implanted to his.

it's totally just they're like aping the movies now, whole hock. it's crazy. SMH. and the sheeple just eat it all up.

when is everyone gonna wake up, smh, and smell the coffee?

it's like how much more can they take from the movies and jam it into the comics? just look at all that above, SMH. they must think we're stupid to not catch on to it.
DrKinsolving - 7/17/2014, 5:36 AM

Extremis was the basis for Iron Man 3 not Iron Man 2, just sayin'
