First Look At Sir Ben Kingsley As ‘The Mandarin’ In New Still Photo From IRON MAN 3!

UPDATED | Another still photo from Shane Black's Iron Man 3 “crisis thriller” has surfaced, now showcasing the first official look at Sir Ben Kingsley as the Ten Rings terrorist leader, The Mandarin!

“A lot of this movie is about characters going back into the shadows for various reasons and characters who have been in the shadows coming out and into the light for the first time,” says Marvel Studios president of Production, Kevin Feige. “It is Tony who, for various reasons, finds himself receding into the darkness. I don’t mean emotional darkness, I mean literally ducking out of the spotlight. And we’ll see other characters stepping up who have pulled strings from the background, starting to show their hand.” Regarding The Mandarin not being Chinese, like in the comics, Feige says “It’s less about his specific ethnicity than the symbolism of various cultures and iconography that he perverts for his own end.”

Marvel Studios’ “Iron Man 3” pits brash-but-brilliant industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds. When Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy’s hands, he embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible. This journey, at every turn, will test his mettle. With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him. As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man? Starring Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Guy Pearce, Rebecca Hall, Stephanie Szostak, James Badge Dale with Jon Favreau and Ben Kingsley, “Iron Man 3” is directed by Shane Black from a screenplay by Drew Pearce & Shane Black and is based on Marvel’s iconic Super Hero Iron Man, who first appeared on the pages of “Tales of Suspense” (#39) in 1963 and had his solo comic book debut with “The Invincible Iron Man” (#1) in May of 1968. “Iron Man 3” is presented by Marvel Studios in association with Paramount Pictures & DMG Entertainment. Marvel Studios’ President Kevin Feige is producing & Jon Favreau, Louis D’Esposito, Stephen Broussard, Victoria Alonso, Alan Fine, Charles Newirth, Stan Lee & Dan Mintz are executive producers. The film hits May 3, 2013, & is distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures.

I'm not saying i don't like him, I'm just wondering if it's a good choice to cast a 70-year-old man for a role that might require some action and probably sequels.
Mrcool210 - 10/22/2012, 9:25 AM
eh, im not feeling it

himynameisnik - 10/22/2012, 9:38 AM
I'm very surprised by the accuracy to source material because of Shane Blacks often quoted statement about the Mandarin being a "racist caricature". I assumed we'd get a very modernised version of the character but I'm happily proven wrong!
jimpinto24 - 10/22/2012, 9:39 AM
IMO, when I look at Sir Ben Kingsley, I see The Mandarin.
superotherside - 10/22/2012, 9:42 AM
Ben Kingsley looks fantastic as Mandarin. Hope he uses the rings though.
Christuffer - 10/22/2012, 9:43 AM
Cool but not too exciting.

And, obvious mole is obvious
FrankieDedo - 10/22/2012, 9:45 AM
i think that he's only the first mandarin, and he will die, and the second will be a chinese...he could be someone like the "evil dalai lama" that reincarnates or another one is chosen and return to lead the ten rings, every time he dies.
However the look is so-so, i didn't like the hair much, not the beard.
DarthTesla - 10/22/2012, 9:47 AM
Sweet. Kingsley's gonna knock it out.
Danbojohnj - 10/22/2012, 9:48 AM
Fu Manchu x Bin Laden
Hope hes got a mouth on him like he had in Sexy Beast.
RedSkull667 - 10/22/2012, 9:49 AM
Seriously mother[frick]rs complain so much. Where did you guys go to crib in pre internet era?
TheAbomination - 10/22/2012, 9:50 AM
Looks good to me. Can't wait to hear his voice in the trailer.
FrankieDedo - 10/22/2012, 9:50 AM
it could be like this: the first mandarin kills the family of the chinese scientist, friend of tony stark, for some plot reason the scientist blames stark of his loss, and he want to kill him, to do this, after the first mandarin is dead, he takes the rings, and swear to kill him, in this way we would get the original mandarin backstory, but without all the reincarnation stuff, and a reason to kill stark.
However, now i'm caring just about how the movie is made, i'm believing in marvel for now, let'see if they're going to lose my trust in them.
DC4everLantern - 10/22/2012, 9:51 AM
That sucks!!! He looks like a dwarf from Lord of the rings. To bad for you Marvel Guys ;D .
Benjamitesandwich - 10/22/2012, 9:52 AM
Looks fantastic! To all those butthurt about the ethnicity change, please read the last sentence in the opening paragraph. By making Mandarin one who takes from other cultures, it shows that he is a very intelligent man with strong ideals. He knows what he wants.
OdinsBeard - 10/22/2012, 9:54 AM
poop23 - 10/22/2012, 9:55 AM
Looks awesome
Boogie138 - 10/22/2012, 10:00 AM
first thing from this film to impress me.

“It’s less about his specific ethnicity than the symbolism of various cultures and iconography that he perverts for his own end.”

this makes sense. if more bombs like this dropped, i may make a full swing on IM3
R888 - 10/22/2012, 10:01 AM
badass :)
RamonSuarez - 10/22/2012, 10:01 AM
Interesting. He looks stockier than I imagined for the character. I'm digging the warlord look though its different than what the Mandarin represent - a literari. I wonder how the armor plays into his powers.
RamonSuarez - 10/22/2012, 10:04 AM
Anyone who says the Mandarin doesn't look Chinese misses the point. As Fiege said the point is for the character to appropriate the cultural symbol of "The Mandarin" as a technocrat/intellectual who controls things behind the scenes. Its just like when they hired Liam Neeson (an Irishman) to play an Arabic warlord in Ras Al'Ghul. The idea of the Demon's Head was just a symbol that represented the villain's larger agenda.
Benjamitesandwich - 10/22/2012, 10:07 AM
Have you ever even read Iron Man comics which featured Mandarin (excluding the Matt Fraction run)? "Why this long beard?" <--- This wreaks of ignorance. Mandarin is a barbarian . . . which is EXACTLY what Kingsley looks like.
Spidex3000 - 10/22/2012, 10:07 AM
Awesome Mandarin, only makes sense fir him to be middle eastern
Tony93 - 10/22/2012, 10:08 AM
Haha he does look like a dwarf haha
I'm not hating but he kinda looks lame? Idk..
Tony93 - 10/22/2012, 10:09 AM
Well maybe I don't like it since its Ben...
I'm not really fond of him. But I heard he played a a good ghandi
