IRON MAN 3 Is A “Dark Comedy” Says James Badge Dale

Explaining what the production was like, working with director Shane Black and Iron Man 3 star Robert Downey Jr., “Eric Savin” actor James Badge Dale says the threequel is a “Dark Comedy” with farce.

Making the cover of this month's Glow Magazine issue, James Badge Dale discussed the number of big movies he has forthcoming, from The Lone Ranger to Iron Man 3. And when asked about playing one of the villains in the latter 2013 Marvel sequel, via Just Jared, the actor explained:

“I had a great time. I went from riding a horse in the desert for The Lone Ranger, tossed my dogs in a car and went to Iron Man 3 with guys in robot suits. IM3 is really a dark comedy with a little bit of farce. The trick is to be able to have the audience relate to you. Director Shane Black gave me a long leash. We had a great time. Robert Downey Jr. loves the process of acting and loves to be creative with a director and his fellow actors.” About his other future projects, “I’m close to a deal with a film in Austin, Texas. If it works out I’ll throw the dogs in the car and head down. Just hope there are no horses involved. I still have horse smell in my jeans from The Lone Ranger. I’m a city boy with a metro card. I prefer the subway.”

Marvel Studios’ “Iron Man 3” pits brash-but-brilliant industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds. When Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy’s hands, he embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible. This journey, at every turn, will test his mettle. With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him. As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man? Starring Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Guy Pearce, Rebecca Hall, Stephanie Szostak, James Badge Dale with Jon Favreau and Ben Kingsley, “Iron Man 3” is directed by Shane Black from a screenplay by Drew Pearce & Shane Black and is based on Marvel’s iconic Super Hero Iron Man, who first appeared on the pages of “Tales of Suspense” (#39) in 1963 and had his solo comic book debut with “The Invincible Iron Man” (#1) in May of 1968. “Iron Man 3” is presented by Marvel Studios in association with Paramount Pictures & DMG Entertainment. Marvel Studios’ President Kevin Feige is producing & Jon Favreau, Louis D’Esposito, Stephen Broussard, Victoria Alonso, Alan Fine, Charles Newirth, Stan Lee & Dan Mintz are exec producers. The film hits May 3, 2013, & is distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pict.

Shit, I could've told you that. It's [frick]ing Shane Black, have you ever seen Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang. He made a dog swallowing a dude's finger sad, creepy, dark and hilarious all at once! Not to mention Val's "Faggot Gun" from the scene with the car battery.
Reasonnnn - 12/15/2012, 10:22 AM
^ Hey wookwook, shut up. KISS KISS BANG BANG is [frick]ing awesome and I have so much confidence in Shane Black
FirstAvenger - 12/15/2012, 10:26 AM

OptimusPrimeTime - 12/15/2012, 10:38 AM
@@ everyone EXCEPT dubWookWook...WHAT Y'ALL SAID.'re way off base my friend. Don't be such a baby.
California - 12/15/2012, 10:47 AM
ARRRGGGGG!!!! His comments = because this is based on a comic book, we didn't take it seriously and made a joke out of it. No matter what any of the producers, directors, etc. say about Iron Man 2, Sam Rockwell/Justin Hammer part sucked ass and ruined the movie. Out of anything else, his farcical, joke of part did not hold up at all.
DioFoRio - 12/15/2012, 10:47 AM
Dubwookwook....your Avatar is a wookie playing baseball...all your "childish" remarks are moot. Plus all the shit you say is so [frick]ing stupid Corkey from life goes on says you're retarded.

@Battlin...KKBB is [frick]ing awesome. Hell Lethal weapons were "dark"action comedies.
ArtisticErotic - 12/15/2012, 10:50 AM
Not interested in Dark Comedy.

TheGambitFreak - 12/15/2012, 10:53 AM
The [frick] are guys surprised it's going to be a dark comedy? Usually, when a Director or actor is hired on, I research and watch their work. With Black, I knew what I was getting into.

Also, Are you guys daft? Did you guys watch the trailer? It isn't exactly like the previous Iron Man films...Tony's going through some tough stuff in this one. All the things that reached the Cold Light of Day in Avengers, scared him. And it all comes to a screeching pandemonium when Mandarin makes his debut into the playboy's life. This is Tony's culminating moment, his live free or die hard moment. This is not for the contemplation of children's minds...

Needless to say, we've come a long ways....
shamo - 12/15/2012, 10:53 AM
outside of the Wolverine, script wise, it should easily be superior then the other CBMs of 2013.
DioFoRio - 12/15/2012, 10:55 AM
yo're wasting your breath homie.
marvel72 - 12/15/2012, 11:28 AM
@ toiletbowl

marvel can't make a decent third part, considering marvel studios has only reached one third part in all their franchises.

if you're on about spider-man,blade & x-men all made by different studios, nice try though.
rocky - 12/15/2012, 11:36 AM
Don't take the Marvel vs DC bait guys.

I have no doubts about this being great.

Btw where's the Wolverine trailer. That and Kick Ass are the 2 missing from the summer cbm. Supes and IM look ready to knock it out of the park
SageMode - 12/15/2012, 11:41 AM
That was a given for everyone familiar with his work. This is gonna be awesome
Funsize - 12/15/2012, 11:48 AM
sounds great
MrChuff - 12/15/2012, 11:52 AM
The combination of Shane Black and RDJr has already been proven to kick maximum ass. With Black directing RDJr again and also having a hand in writing duties this has every chance of being astounding...just a shame there wont be any top-notch Black effin' & Jeffin'.
TheGambitFreak - 12/15/2012, 11:54 AM
Hey @tolietbowl:

Thanos and Rocket Raccoon are BOTH getting the live action treatment before DC can even get their continuity straight for the 3 superheroes they've brought to the big screens...

Now listen to me. Are you listening? Okay, here's what I want you to do:

1. Disable your account
2. Go to youtube and watch "Skyfall Trailer"
3. Exit your internet application
4. Shut your computer down
5. Turn on your TV and put TDKR into your DVD player.
6. Watch it, and never come back.

You catch my drift?
Are you picking up what I'm putting down?
Get it?
Got it?
marvel72 - 12/15/2012, 11:58 AM
@ toiletbowl

dc aren't experts at the third movie either.

first most of their movies don't even reach a third outing i.e jonah hex, catwoman, supergirl, swamp thing, steel & green lantern.

& the ones that do ain't that great either superman 3 & 4,batman forever, batman & robin oh & you can't forget the dark knight rises the worse of the nolan trilogy.

granted the dark knight rises is better than the above dc movies i mentioned & better than spider-man 3,blade 3 & x-men 3 but its still an average movie.
DioFoRio - 12/15/2012, 12:04 PM
exactly trudmiester.
DioFoRio - 12/15/2012, 12:05 PM

DioFoRio - 12/15/2012, 12:06 PM
hey toilet that where you live since your ma's failed attempt at an abortion? Tell her to flush.

too soon?
ToTheManInTheColdSweat - 12/15/2012, 12:10 PM
Dark comedy? then what [frick]ing trailer did i watch?

I doubt it, mother[frick]er is saying that because it's a cbm, probably thinks all cbms are comedy. Dark comedy is when a [frick]ing film makes fun of a depressing/dark subject like MASH (one of my favorite [frick]ing shows) making fun of war. It's that uncomfortable laughter you get when iran is nucked by accident. Time will tell.
OnLeatherWings - 12/15/2012, 12:21 PM
Well I like dark comedies but I highly doubt this statement will turn out to be true
TheGambitFreak - 12/15/2012, 12:29 PM
Dark Comedy: A comedy characterized by grim or satiric humor; a comedy having gloomy or disturbing elements.

Jollem - 12/15/2012, 12:37 PM
and that's any different from the first two how...?
AztecRainGod - 12/15/2012, 12:38 PM
Cant wait to see this movie.
DioFoRio - 12/15/2012, 12:44 PM
life is a dark one takes shit so Uber serious. It's called levity.
Jollem - 12/15/2012, 12:52 PM
they already said the movie was going to be a technological thriller. saying it's going to be a dark comedy is just like saying; "you're getting more of the same"

at any rate, "threequel" is a silly word, just like "twoquel" :)
DioFoRio - 12/15/2012, 1:06 PM
how about nyquill
Jollem - 12/15/2012, 1:15 PM
@Dionysios - how about tony chugging some nyquill and taking the suit out for a spin? :)
DioFoRio - 12/15/2012, 1:16 PM
lol. that would be funny. Demon in a plastic bottle.
Jollem - 12/15/2012, 1:19 PM
@Dio - nice
Jollem - 12/15/2012, 1:24 PM
@MrEko - i'll take a pot-shot here and there...all in jest, tho :)
KaBlam5 - 12/15/2012, 1:29 PM
Oh well a dark comedy story involving a super hero comic this should be fun!
TheAbomination - 12/15/2012, 1:32 PM
Good deal. They're gonna need some comedy to counter-balance the more serious stuff we saw in the trailer.
IronLantern79 - 12/15/2012, 1:32 PM
Not sure it should be a dark comedy. But, I'm still waiting to pass judgment AFTER i see it.
SageMode - 12/15/2012, 1:50 PM
Phase 2 is gonna be the joint. Roll it up and smoke.
Jollem - 12/15/2012, 1:55 PM
@MrEko - why thanky, sir. i like the cut of yer gibberish as well :)
shamo - 12/15/2012, 2:19 PM
it will be a grim year for superheroes next year.
Thor: The DARK world
Iron Man 3 - DARK comedy
The Wolverine - Dark and Serious character so expect the movie to reflect that
Man of Steel - apparently he's now a Dark and Serious character as well
GodzillaKart - 12/15/2012, 2:36 PM
Be interesting to see what "Dark Comedy" means here. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang could definitely be defined that way, and it was awesome. At the same time, it was a drama.
