Iron Man 3 Update From Robert Downey Jr.'s Production Company President!

Iron Man 3 Update From Robert Downey Jr.'s Production Company President!

Dotting overall on the new direction with Shane Black, villain(s), as well the involvement of previous director Jon Favreau, make the jump & check out an Iron Man 3 update!

Chatting in-depth with Schmoes Know, the president of 'Tony Stark' actor Robert Downey's Jr.'s production company, David Gambino, offered an update of Marvel Studios' forthcoming Iron Man 3 movie. Discussing the film's new direction, villain(s), and director Shane Black among other things, transcribed by the great RimBreaks, read on below!

On the film's direction after The Avengers...
"We're still in the early phases. Shane & Drew Pearce (second screenwriter) are working through the story outline & hopefully, at some point in August, Shane is going to start hammering keys & writing the script, but he has such a unique viewpoint on Tony Stark & I think his corky sensibility is going to be great for the series. It's going to feel, like a reinvention of what it can be as opposed to continuing the saga. What makes Shane a good writer is that he's such a very complex human being. He's got his own demons in a lot of ways."

On Shane Black's directing and Downey connection...
"Shane, like Robert, is very meticulous about the story. As we've seen just from this Summer's movies already, you can throw a razzle-dazzle on the screen, but if the stuff coming out of people's mouth doesn't work - your movie is dead.
It's interesting, because Shane is such a unique character. Robert obviously really hit it off with him in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. Robert always says, that Shane is one of those guys, that just kinda gets the idea behind RDJ's character. There's sorta fast talking super intelligent guy, y'know. Not all of them (the directors & screenwriters) can nail that, but that's kind of Shane's ear, if y'know what I mean. He just does that naturally & it really fits well with Robert, who's been looking for an opportunity of doing another movie with Shane.

We want to have a different direction & feel to this movie. Robert wants to make sure, that he really gets the story right. He & Shane have been hammering through it for the last couple of months, making sure that they're making the right choices to take the series in a place, that's going to be surprising, not going to feel like a rehash. The first thing we've said, when we sat down was - why are we doing the third movie?! We know the obvious answer: because it's going to make the s**tload of money & everyone's going to be rich, but that's not the reason why we, as a company, want to make movies.

On previous Iron Man director Jon Favreau's involvement...
Favreau is still super close to this project. Actually, we're talking about putting him in the role (Happy Hogan) in the piece, but he (Jon) has given Shane his blessing on the series to continue on.

On the direction with the threequel's villain(s)...
I can't talk about the villains right now, but what I can say is though that there's been lot of analysis of looking through all of the villains that have been in the Iron Man world. All I say is, that I think the person or persons, that we've decided to play with are going to be pretty exciting for the audience.

I think, that fanboys will appreciate it. Again, you have to be so deep inside the Iron Man series to really understand who all the villains are with their potentials. Look, it doesn't even matter who the villain is, because if you get the villain wrong - say, they (companies) are always making the announcements: We're going with THIS guy for the villain! and you're like GREAT and then you see him executed very poorly.

So, to us it's like figuring what the bad guy does & actually what Tony comes up against. We're not acting like: Oh, let's pick up that bad guy from the comics & let's hope it works! So, there's a lot of work, that needs to be done.

On Marvel Studios' president Kevin Fiege and overall production...
"Kevin has spent a lot of time with us on these meetings. He wants the best! He's sitting there, saying: Y'know, we need the best choice & the third film, that's going to improve on & make the brand more exciting, than anything we've seen in the first & second films. Everybody's head's in the right place, so that's a good starting point.

Again, we're really in the early phases of it. It's a little scary, though, because they want to start shooting next February or March. The intention is to make a film, that's going to stand the test of time & people are actually going to watch it, saying: Wow! The third one is even better than the first!

^ h is missing in choices.
LMB10 - 8/16/2011, 11:38 AM
Mandarin please Marvel... And possibly Crimson Dynamo or Ghost as well... Please?
Cross - 8/16/2011, 11:42 AM
Don't make another Iron Man 2.
superotherside - 8/16/2011, 11:42 AM
Great glad Happy will be back... hopefully they'll put Ghost and maybe Mandarin in there... or set up Mandarin for the sequel... at any rate if they do Mandarin they shouldn't kill him! leave him alive so he can be in sequels!
Cross - 8/16/2011, 11:49 AM
Iron Man has the weakest rouges gallery.
kingmonkeyman - 8/16/2011, 11:52 AM
I think Mandarin is the only choice for Iron Man 3. They already have easter eggs in the first two movies tying it in with Mandarin. If not i would like to see Stilt Man or the Unicorn.
LMB10 - 8/16/2011, 11:54 AM
Like otherside said, don't kill whoever is the villain... Not because they should be in sequels, becuase Iron Man needs a rouges gallery in the films. Both his major villains have been killed so far, and eventually Iron Man would have nobody to fight.
jimoakley666 - 8/16/2011, 11:58 AM
Actually, M.O.D.O.K. and A.I.M. would be pretty cool. Never thought much of Mandarin as a character or a villain.

Yeah, we know he was around first, but the general public may think he's the dude from Big Trouble in Little China. Ha.
CraptainAmerica - 8/16/2011, 11:59 AM
Got to be The Mandarin. Theyve used the Ten Rings throughout and it would only be right to finish there. All villains were linke to the organisation so why would that not get explored? It's inevitable
TheShakeBake - 8/16/2011, 12:01 PM
@kingmonkeyman you would like to see Unicorn?? no one would come see the movie if they hear iron man is fighting the Unicorn, i kno he is a classic villain but not movie material; I'm fine with Crimson Dynamo or Mandarin, but since the past two movies have been tech based villains my bets on Dynamo
GodzillaKart - 8/16/2011, 12:01 PM
No more villains in armor and NO FIN FANG FOOM!

To Iron Man 3;

Please don't suck.

With thanks,
Your loyal fans.

I would love to see Mandarin.
But I think someone like Ghost or Spymaster would allow for a great story also! Maybe they could even give Justin Hammer more of a villainous role. He didn't die at the end of Iron Man 2. It'd be interesting to see him finance some Industrial sabotage while in prison.
jazzman - 8/16/2011, 12:13 PM

Crimson Dynamo was already used in Iron Man 2. Mickey Rourke character is a fusion of both Crimson Dynamo and Whiplash.
Spidey91 - 8/16/2011, 12:14 PM
Mandarin and a hint to Fing Fang Foom
Dev - 8/16/2011, 12:19 PM
Eh...Iron Man rogues are pretty lame IMO. They should just conclude the series with the Mandarin and that's it.
nikgrid - 8/16/2011, 12:25 PM
I'd like some Iron Man in my Iron Man 3 please, and less Avengers.

sorry they need sci fi and magic against Iron Man. things that he dont believe it be a better battle for him. plus u forget that Iron Man is in The Avengers that movie going to have Magic and Sci-Fi.

IF!... They don't go with Mandarin, I'd like to go with Unicorn with a good story! Use his drinking problem to losing his control over Stark Industries with the board of directors screwing him over, and don't "Monger" Unicorn up like you did with Whiplash! Make him as sleek as Iron Man but more flexible and younger for a challenge, espically the fight scenes! They need to have more time and epic choreography
marvel72 - 8/16/2011, 12:38 PM
@ jazzman

sort of,in the comics i believe the original whiplash did become crimson dynamo but the crimson dynamo in the comic is red.

i think they may pick another armored foe(s) because i think from watching the beginning of iron man 2 it showed other nations devolping their own take on the iron man suit.

iron man 3 armor wars.
Maximillion - 8/16/2011, 12:41 PM
Great that they are taking their time to consider which villain to use this time around, the villains in the last two movies were kinda lame,...ok not lame, but the end battles, could be more epic!
SageMode - 8/16/2011, 12:45 PM
I hope its Mandarin and Fin Fang Foom
kingmonkeyman - 8/16/2011, 12:53 PM
@TheShakeBake. I was just being sarcastic with the Stilt Man and Unicorn suggestions. Any villain who names themselves after a gay animal certainly doesn't deserve any screen time. It's Mandarin or bust.
Optimus83 - 8/16/2011, 12:56 PM
The Mandarin now, like Ra's Al Ghul with Genghis Khan. ...
Fonzieismypal - 8/16/2011, 1:01 PM

[frick] you, dude and your "general public". If they don't buy comics, they can take their opinions and shove them up their assholes. It's Mandarin or nothing for me. I don't want to see M.O.D.O.K. in my comics, let alone on the big screen and rehashing the Crimson Dynamo would just seem pathetic. BRING ON MANDARIN!

Are you even aware of the Avengers, dude? Thor's very existence is going to challenge Tony, and that struggle is going to make for an amazing plot in IM3. Especially if Mandarin is the primary antagonist.
ComicsCommando - 8/16/2011, 1:03 PM
[frick] Feige.
JackBauer - 8/16/2011, 1:04 PM
It needs to be the Mandarin but based on what he said it looks like it will be a villain(s) that only die-hard fans would know about.

I'm thinking it's going to be Santa

volumedealer1 - 8/16/2011, 1:06 PM
Yeah, mandirin has got to be used, with all these movies made, they can do him right, use fing fang(who i could care less about),or use Ghost,he was pretty good back in the Bob Layton days.
MaddMonkk - 8/16/2011, 1:06 PM
Madame Masque. Mandarin is obviously first choice but I want a strong hot woman to dominate me... um... the screen.
SageMode - 8/16/2011, 1:14 PM
It would be such a slap in the face to all Iron Man and Marvel fans if the Mandarin wasnt in the last sequel. That would be like Spider-Man without Green Goblin, Batman without Joker, or Superman without Lex Luthor. He's Iron Man's ARCH-ENEMY....that reason alone should be enough to have him included.
CapA - 8/16/2011, 1:16 PM
Living Laser !
plasticman - 8/16/2011, 1:18 PM
I agree with the notion that Stilt Man would make a worthy adversary. At least as a side villan that is taken down early on in the movie.

Mandarin is a must for the primary villan but if it feels too wacky you can be assured that they will move on to another worthy villain.
FriendlyNeighborhoodSpidey - 8/16/2011, 1:22 PM
Mandarin would be best. Or AIM and present day HYDRA. But they would need a major villain to lead them. Like MODOK. But I don't see how he could be translated on screen very well so better go with Mandarin lol.
Bar20 - 8/16/2011, 1:23 PM
Just continune the Avengers events with some new bad guy..
RolandD - 8/16/2011, 1:31 PM
Fin Fang Foom? Really? That would be the 3rd movie kiss of death. I can just hear reviewers talking about a character named Fing Fang Foom. Of course they could leave the creature's out of it, just like the Abomination was never really called that by name in the second Hulk movie, but I would still not want the creature in the movie.

Iron Man's villains gallery is a bit low on spectacular villains so I don't have a great suggestion, either, but definitely not FFF. Mandarin looks best so far, but he does not excite me.
