James Badge Dale Talks IRON MAN 3; Addresses 'Iron Patriot' Rumors And More

It was initially thought that James Badge Dale dons the 'Iron Patriot' suit in Iron Man 3, and the actor talks here about that misunderstanding, his actual 'Coldblood' costume and the tone that Shane Black has brought to the threequel.

When an actor who closely resembled James Badge Dale was spotted on the set of Iron Man 3 in the 'Iron Patriot' armour, it was understandably assumed that he would be donning the suit originally worn by Norman Osborn in the comic books. Well, we later discovered that it was simply a stuntman, and that it is in fact Don Cheadle's Rhodey who will be behind the mask in a rejigged version of the 'War Machine' suit. Talking to Vulture, Dale clarified that he is playing Eric Savin, a character that he confirmed is, "Loosely based on Coldblood."

"The great thing about my costume in Iron Man is that it's very low-pro," he adds. "It was very confusing, because I was in Albequerque filming The Lone Ranger, and people were calling me going, 'Yo, dude, I saw you on the Iron Man set!' And I was like, 'Brother, I ain't even shown up yet. I'm still in the desert, riding horses,'" the actor says of the misunderstanding that it was him wearing the 'Iron Patriot' armour. Regardless, he's still very excited about the direction that director Shane Black is taking the film in. "The tone of the film is very particular, very offbeat, very out-there."

TheAmazingSpidey63 - 10/15/2012, 5:24 PM
@thewonderer - Dude, listen, if you're trying to (or hoping to) start up some little fight with CBM users, then just don't. It's not [frick]ing worth it, no one wants that sh!t, it doesn't solve anything AT ALL, so just forget it, okay? If you want to comment on this thread, then do so with some manners and without causing any trouble. Otherwise, you're either gonna get reported or commented on by other users. Just sayin'.
jimpinto24 - 10/15/2012, 5:25 PM
I can't wait for the IM3 trailer!
marcvader1 - 10/15/2012, 5:27 PM
Marvel studios is pretty accurate when it comes to its starring characters not so much with 3rd tier characters. They nail the characterizations of the main characters.
Ranger14 - 10/15/2012, 5:27 PM
"loosely based on coldbold"

omg Marvel are so accurate!"

Says the guy defending all the loosely-based Batman story lines in the Nolan franchise. lol Trying to justify TDK as being based partially from the Long Halloween series, yet no Holiday to be seen. Yep...loosely-based.
GSpawn - 10/15/2012, 5:29 PM
WAHHHH, a marvel studios film is loosely basing a character off another comics character so I will bitch and moan about nothing! WAHHH

Wonderer I wouldn't be complaining about another CBM loosely basing a character off another when your entire film is ENTIRELY LOOSELY based off a comic so you can leave with that shit right now
CoolantTech - 10/15/2012, 5:30 PM
@IM53 Thanks It took a long time trying to get it focused just right
NightForce - 10/15/2012, 5:31 PM
I like this guy seen him in a lot of bit parts all over the place. He was in that AMC show Rubicon, and The Departed, oh yeah and he was on 24 for a little while. Seriously itching like a mother[frick]er for the IM3 trailer next week.
I've seen a lot "Crow" avatars on this site. The movie is in my Netflix queue I just never get the chance to watch it.
TheAmazingSpidey63 - 10/15/2012, 5:32 PM
Oh, sh!t. The trailer is NEXT WEEK?? NEXT WEEK??!!!

superpooper - 10/15/2012, 5:32 PM
This is the guy from the Pacific right? Hmmm. I don't know from Coldblood. I still think that one War Machine is one too many in this film. Iron Man doesn't need a partner or a sidekick, especially one who is basically a silver Iron Man. Never thought it was a good idea in the comics and I still don't see the need for it now. Whatever. At least we get the Mandarin, but Ben Kingsley though? He had a great role with Ghandi, but that's just it...it was his ONLY great role. Everything he's done since then has been weak sauce. I need to see what he looks like.
Ranger14 - 10/15/2012, 5:34 PM
I don't really care if a story line is loosely-based off of various canon as long as the characters are true to the look, feel and have the abilities they are supposed to on screen.
FrozenJoy - 10/15/2012, 5:35 PM
Anyways, bring on the IRON MAN 3 Teaser!!!
TheAmazingSpidey63 - 10/15/2012, 5:38 PM
@Kamen and @cipher - Thanks, bros. :)
Ranger14 - 10/15/2012, 5:41 PM
"He had a great role with Ghandi, but that's just it...it was his ONLY great role. Everything he's done since then has been weak sauce."

Seriously? Hugo, House of Sand and Fog, Schindler's List, Sexy Beast, Ann Frank, etc.
thewonderer - 10/15/2012, 5:49 PM
Ranger is the only one to truly reply to my assertion. Thanks for that.

Theres this strange thinking that Marvel does everything accurate and DC doesn't in terms of film.

I really dont care if Marvel deviates from the source material, I just can't help seeing the hypocrisy of criticizing DCs movies for it.

"characters are true to the look, feel and have the abilities they are supposed to on screen."

This is actually a reasonable response, and I applaud you for it.

Ranger14 - 10/15/2012, 5:58 PM
thewonderer@ It's not so much deviating from the source for me as long as there is also enough accuracy from the source as well. As to my characters comment, I am surprised with your response to that considering Bane was a fail in that department, as far as I and many others were concerned.
Knightrider - 10/15/2012, 5:59 PM
I know the trailer is next week, but I don't think we will see too much, never do from the first trailer, especially when still filming, and a movie like this requires a lot of effect shots.

I would be very happy if we just got a glimpse of how the new suit works, due to rumours parts attach to Tony Stark without the need for the assembly pad thing.
superpooper - 10/15/2012, 5:59 PM
^^ Yeah. Not that this role in Iron Man requires an academy award winning performance by any means, but he was touted as such a brilliant actor after Ghandi that when nothing else he did EVER came close to that his career just became kinda mediocre. I liked Schindlers list though, but not in any way due to his performance. But that's just me. My point is more that I don't see him in that role. I'm curious to see what, if anything he brings to it.
Boogie138 - 10/15/2012, 6:03 PM
coldblood? ok when did this happen lol i way ouuta the loop in IM3
DioFoRio - 10/15/2012, 6:09 PM
hey wonderer when we want to hear your opinion...we will collectively remove our penises from your mouth...then and only then, will you have our perrrrrmision to whine.
DioFoRio - 10/15/2012, 6:11 PM
[email protected]..you set it up in your comment but he was to blind to see it...he shoulda wondered a bit more on that there response of yers.
thewonderer - 10/15/2012, 6:35 PM
If no one cared what I thought, no one would reply at all to what I said.

And I'm not trying to start a fan war by saying my opinion on the matter.

Tony93 - 10/15/2012, 6:38 PM
theres gonna be a tease next week?
AlSimmons - 10/15/2012, 6:44 PM
@Griffff2 Y'know the real Grif actually likes Iron Man, right?
willyburz - 10/15/2012, 6:50 PM
Ok, the troll sucks, and Im fing pumped for the Iron Man 3 trailer...BUT, WTF?!?!?! I may have officially lost faith in movie fans :-( The Crow is a great [frick]ing movie, nuff said! Im sad for you dude, The original Crow movie is EPIC!
Ghostfire - 10/15/2012, 7:01 PM
@Wonder..I mean @Breaking..
Whatever you go by, we don't care what you think, whatever made you think we did? We're simply telling to stop wasting space in the comment's section, so that, those who do have something constructive to say, can be heard.
DrHorrible - 10/15/2012, 7:09 PM
@thewonderer I don't really know you. You don't know me. You seem like a Nolan purist douche that has the vocabulary of a 4 year old. I don't like you. Go ahead and come after me. I'll be over here laughing at you.

Optimus83 - 10/15/2012, 7:25 PM
