Kevin Feige Further Explains Shane Black's Direction For ‘The Mandarin’ In IRON MAN 3

Now explaining how Shane Black's direction for the Mandarin reassured the villain's inclusion in the third Iron Man installment, among other things, check out more of what Kevin Feige offers.

Our pals at MTV News have just posted an extended piece from their exclusive chat with Marvel producer and head honcho Kevin Feige. Further explaining how Iron Man 3 director Shane Black provided a take on The Mandarin that guaranteed the iconic villain's inclusion, Feige also addresses how that interpretation intentionally strayed from the character's comic book backstory.

“He had a take on the Mandarin that fit with where we wanted to take Tony in this movie,” Feige said of Shane Black. “Shane is as much about tone as he is about any specific dialogue that he writes. He brings such a love of cinema and of this character in particular to the movie that I hope will make it feel fresh all over again. None of us wanted to do Fu Man Chu. We weren't interested in that in the least. When we took away the notion of the Fu Man Chu and 'I found rings in a spaceship,' we got much more to 'How do we bring his Ten Rings organization and make it scary the way real-life terrorists can be scary, but also much more theatrical and flamboyant, like how the Mandarin was in the comics?' So we made him very public and had him take credit for his actions, to announce them in a very public way before striking. That's good for a movie, because it makes things very dramatic, and it also brings the Mandarin into the 21st century, where the videos you pass through the 24-hour news cycle is as important as the strike itself.”

Marvel Studios’ “Iron Man 3” pits brash-but-brilliant industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds. When Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy’s hands, he embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible. This journey, at every turn, will test his mettle. With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him. As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man? Starring Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Guy Pearce, Rebecca Hall, Stephanie Szostak, James Badge Dale with Jon Favreau and Ben Kingsley, “Iron Man 3” is directed by Shane Black from a screenplay by Drew Pearce & Shane Black and is based on Marvel’s iconic Super Hero Iron Man, who first appeared on the pages of “Tales of Suspense” (#39) in 1963 and had his solo comic book debut with “The Invincible Iron Man” (#1) in May of 1968. “Iron Man 3” is presented by Marvel Studios in association with Paramount Pictures & DMG Entertainment. Marvel Studios’ President Kevin Feige is producing & Jon Favreau, Louis D’Esposito, Stephen Broussard, Victoria Alonso, Alan Fine, Charles Newirth, Stan Lee & Dan Mintz are executive producers. The film hits May 3, 2013, & is distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures.

No Fu Manchu? Christopher Lee is disappointed.
Jollem - 1/22/2013, 11:59 AM
so, they're changing things around and it's not "true to the source material" like every cbm is? cool, let's see what they can do
RexDartEskimoSpy - 1/22/2013, 11:59 AM
@batz11: I think what Feige's saying is that the Mandarin just stumbling across some magic alien rings doesn't make for a good villain. He should be self made, like Iron Man. Whether he actually HAS rings, alien or otherwise, remains to be seen...
RexDartEskimoSpy - 1/22/2013, 12:03 PM
Ben Kingsley joins a long list of respected European actors playing pseudo-Asian villains.

Jollem - 1/22/2013, 12:12 PM
i don't care about the rings like i don't care about tubes or a wrestling mask
superotherside - 1/22/2013, 12:17 PM
I'm pretty sure I've guessed at what they are doing with Mandarin. I really should write an editorial on it.
DioFoRio - 1/22/2013, 12:33 PM
i want to hear why Shane changed his mind.
Temple - 1/22/2013, 12:52 PM
@batz11 Damn, pretty cool chart.
Temple - 1/22/2013, 12:55 PM
I really do hope the rings do something, if not, then by symbolic, they have an actually influence in real life. Either way, I can't wait and see.
shamo - 1/22/2013, 12:58 PM
when Fox changes the characters - people cry.
when Marvel stuidos changest the characters - people cheer.
AztecRainGod - 1/22/2013, 12:59 PM
No magic rings? WTF!?!? Is Christopher NOlan directing this film???
PapaEmeritus - 1/22/2013, 1:03 PM
So, no "source material" this time, huh? Interesting... some fanboys will start to faint soon! LOL

I personally don't give a damn. As long as the character is well written [as the script] and delivers good acting, i'm cool without magical rings, or helmets, etc, etc.
TheFascinatingMan - 1/22/2013, 1:03 PM
He destroys the mansion with news helicopters so he may actually send in footage of the destruction to the new stations for them to broadcast. This is probably where he delivers his speech on heroes.

What do you guys think?
ATrueHero1987 - 1/22/2013, 1:07 PM
Why people keep saying the rings are magical when the rings are alien in origin?!
RyGoR - 1/22/2013, 1:08 PM
I wonder if mandarin will survive this movie...anyone know how many pictures Mr. Kingsley is signed for..???
RadicalDuck - 1/22/2013, 1:08 PM
Couldn't his rings be a form of technology that he himself has designed? If they don't do anything, I'm not too bothered though.
averageBEAR - 1/22/2013, 1:09 PM
@batz it makes since for them to go this route because ironman is more technological than the avengers so in a stand alone film it would fit better for them to go this way. So if they were alien rings they would have to explain alot more
FennecPilot - 1/22/2013, 1:10 PM
For all the folks who rant and rave about "not being true to the source material" - take a longer look at how comic characters get morphed, changed and altered depending on the artist, era and writer. Iron Man has seen numerous changes and alterations to himself and his entourage/rogue's gallery through the decades. Why is it then that when writers and director's take characters such as Iron Man into the celluloid arena with alterations to make it fit best, you freak out?
StarkAnthony - 1/22/2013, 1:10 PM
I think it will be cool the way they are doing it, but if you can have Iron Man onscreen fighting aliens and Thor then you can have the Mandarin's rings have power. They could have even said that the Mandarin created the ring tech or found the ring tech from a downed Chitauri ship after the Battle of New York.
WYLEEJAY - 1/22/2013, 1:13 PM
@superotherside. I would like to read your article. Im so curious to hear what could be.
averageBEAR - 1/22/2013, 1:15 PM
@starkanthony thats a great point
Marqy - 1/22/2013, 1:26 PM
The worlds has changed .. I can feel it in the water, I feel it in the earth, I smell it in the air.

10 rings were were forged and given to the Chitauri ...
3 to the Chitauri troops who were incinerated by Stark.
3 to the Chitauri who blew up in the building when Cap did his Captainball
and 4 were given to the CHitauri who were eaten by the Hulk

Mandarin took those fings for him

But they were all decieved

For Thanos in the unlikely fires of the cosmos since there is no oxygen in deep space has forged a MASTER RING
soforizo - 1/22/2013, 1:27 PM
Same crap as with Bane, although I'd say this is far worse. The Mandarin has been castrated.
KingMarvel - 1/22/2013, 1:28 PM
What the hell is rwong with staying true to your source material whats wrong with Fu Man Chu?? I did not create the manderin you mother f#ckers at marvel did and fed it to us for decades!! and now all of a sudden you dont like what you created????? What the F#ck is wrong with these fools I dont understand how that fool kevin feige can sit theyr and diss theyr own characters?? If you wanted a osama bin laden type of villian why not creat a new villain instead of changing what you allready got. And the thing is Ben Kingsley could have easely pull the Fu Man Chu type of!

Marqy - 1/22/2013, 1:29 PM
*The worlds have changed
ToTheManInTheColdSweat - 1/22/2013, 1:33 PM
so no [frick]ing rings? are you [frick]ing kidding me. you've got [frick]ing cosmic cubes and shit, but rings are a no go?
ToTheManInTheColdSweat - 1/22/2013, 1:35 PM

gaddamn is everyone on nolans cock lately

star trek - khan, mysterious mother[frick]er-like terrorist wrecking shit

im3 - mandarin, mysterious mother[frick]er-like terrorist wrecking shit
Maximus101 - 1/22/2013, 1:36 PM
I could care less about the rings, I just hope this movie is amazing!!!
GodzillaKart - 1/22/2013, 1:36 PM
I have to say this is one time where the changes they made seem to be a huge improvement.
Maximus101 - 1/22/2013, 1:38 PM
Jesus angry marvelites in here raging lol I'm out
TheFascinatingMan - 1/22/2013, 1:38 PM
I'm disappointed with the no rings. Maybe he will get the power right before the final battle? If not, the ones he are wearing would just be playing homage to the comics.
soforizo - 1/22/2013, 1:47 PM

I'm a DC fan and know little about the Mandarin, but even so I'm disappointed. I don't like bastardized versions of cbm properties, regardless of who owns them. IM 1 and Avengers were solid, but this is a step back.
m0th3r - 1/22/2013, 1:50 PM
ill wait and see, but changes from source material are dangerous and liable to end up being Foxs creative crap. With that said, the changes to Asgard have worked well and not impacted storylines...yet. We also haven't even seen the movie yet, so like Jenny Olsen..lets wait and see if it works well.
lapress - 1/22/2013, 1:56 PM
abuleban - 1/22/2013, 1:58 PM
KingMarvel, fu manchu and such characters are racist; deal with it.
JayTopStix - 1/22/2013, 2:10 PM
@King Marvel. I agree 100% with you.The nerve of these MOFo's.

I hate those changes they make. Nolan made Batman a Pussy for example.
siggisuperman - 1/22/2013, 2:12 PM
I have nothing agains Ben Kingsley who is half asian, playing The Mandarin, but I hope that he is more then just some middle aged terrorist dick. I am hoping for a nice fight scene at the end of this movie.
neonrehan - 1/22/2013, 2:16 PM
I'm still betting on 'powered rings'. I don't believe it was explained why the 10-rings leader in the first movie had a ring, was crushed by rubble, survived only to be dispatched and come back again in 2 thirds of the film fondling the ring.

explain it. go.
KingMarvel - 1/22/2013, 2:18 PM
You know what it is im hearing the same political correct bull i heard back with captain america, he could not ficht nazi's because it might hurt the feelings of real WW2 veterans. and see how that worked out cap was the weakest of the marvel movies.Same sh!t here Mandarin cant be chinese we might step on some tose in china. What the F#ck man!! grow some balls marvel stand by your own creation, it is what it is!
KingMarvel - 1/22/2013, 2:19 PM
HAhaha and now they are changing mandarin in to a Osama bin laden terrorist how many arabs tose are you gonna step on???
