Kevin Feige On IRON MAN 3 ‘Mark XLVII’ And Extremis Speculation; New ‘Tony Stark’ Image

Commenting on the film's Christmas setting, Marvel's Kevin Feige has now discussed the gold armor being Tony Stark's 47th, in addition to how faithful Iron Man 3 will be to Warren Ellis' Extremis storyline

In continuation with earlier coverage of Empire Magazine's exclusive chat with Marvel Studios President, Kevin Feige has dished out even more details for next year's Iron Man 3 actioner.

Considering this is director Shane Black's sixth film that has taken place during the Holiday season, and last month's trailer confirmed that Iron Man 3 will be no exception, one would dub the film a Christmas movie. However, Feige says otherwise: “I wouldn't call it a Christmas movie,” he said.

In regards to the new mostly golden armor that debuted at San Diego Comic-Con and featured prominently throughout the teaser trailer, rumors suggested that the armor will be Tony Stark's Mk XLVII (47). However, Feige says, “Logic would dictate that it would be the Mark VIII, but we've already talked about taking risks, so logic may not apply!!” he laughs.

Early casting details for the threequel first revealed that Iron Man 3 would be loosely based on Warren Ellis' Extremis story arc. And for those who've read the arc and assume they know most of what'll happen in the film, Feige says, “Comic fans are at an advantage and a disadvantage. They know the source material inside and out and believe they can connect clues that lead back to that. And they're at a disadvantage because don't always connect those clues correctly!”

Marvel Studios’ “Iron Man 3” pits brash-but-brilliant industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds. When Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy’s hands, he embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible. This journey, at every turn, will test his mettle. With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him. As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man? Starring Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Guy Pearce, Rebecca Hall, Stephanie Szostak, James Badge Dale with Jon Favreau and Ben Kingsley, “Iron Man 3” is directed by Shane Black from a screenplay by Drew Pearce & Shane Black and is based on Marvel’s iconic Super Hero Iron Man, who first appeared on the pages of “Tales of Suspense” (#39) in 1963 and had his solo comic book debut with “The Invincible Iron Man” (#1) in May of 1968. “Iron Man 3” is presented by Marvel Studios in association with Paramount Pictures & DMG Entertainment. Marvel Studios’ President Kevin Feige is producing & Jon Favreau, Louis D’Esposito, Stephen Broussard, Victoria Alonso, Alan Fine, Charles Newirth, Stan Lee & Dan Mintz are executive producers. The film hits May 3, 2013, & is distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures.

i like the new armour but i don't want it to become the main armour after iron man 3. I'd rather see the bleeding edge armour in the movies after this.
thewonderer - 11/26/2012, 12:49 PM
Something better happen at the end that changes Iron Mans life in a huge way. Kill off Pepper or Rhodes if you must.

The endings of IM and IM2 were pretty happy/light hearted. Time we start seeing the huge consequences of being an Avenger.

Funsize - 11/26/2012, 12:56 PM
This could be really good. Even as good as the first one or even better.
ToTheManInTheColdSweat - 11/26/2012, 1:20 PM
@Jack, that sounds [frick]ing awesome.
FirstAvenger - 11/26/2012, 1:34 PM
Lots of Iron man 3 news I'm liking it.
OptimusPrimeTime - 11/26/2012, 1:44 PM
I'm still wondering if we're only going to see the "Mark XLVII" in iron man 3. All the movies with him in it thus far we've seen at least 2 suits. Is anyone else of the opinion that they are holding back a completely unseen armor that we may not see until the movie?
Kevinwillpeabodyproperties - 11/26/2012, 1:46 PM
Andddd!!!!!! Don't forget that iron man used Thors DNA to clone him and used him to fight captain America's underground avengers during tha anti registration civil war storyline.
Can u [frick]in imagine?????
Holy [frick] its really starting to shape up for a civil war
OptimusPrimeTime - 11/26/2012, 1:47 PM
And I have no complaints with that being the bleeding edge design. That suits a BAMF.
SageMode - 11/26/2012, 1:59 PM

Let Stark quit being Iron Man and leave the Armor in the hands of Happy Hogan. Sound good to you?

"And they're at a disadvantage because don't always connect those clues correctly!"

Take that, internet!!!
JorLBola - 11/26/2012, 2:40 PM
It obviously a reference, the escence of the extremis is there, 'an armor that is almost alive' or literally is part of Tony, but I dont think they talk about a virus or something
marvel72 - 11/26/2012, 2:55 PM
@ thewonderer

from the look of the trailer tony is gonna have to go through a lot shit during the film,so why shouldn't he have a happy ending.
Optimus83 - 11/26/2012, 3:02 PM
best superhero of Marvel: Iron Man, Captain America. ...with Spidey
CoolantTech - 11/26/2012, 5:11 PM
Yeah Tony feels he has to top Space Marvel characters now or at least be on their level, Im happy with the evolution of Tony in the MCU they're definately going in the right direction with him

I can only hope they focus on the other characters the same way.
Optimus83 - 11/26/2012, 6:23 PM
Cool Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.)!!!
RyGoR - 11/26/2012, 6:28 PM
@Optimus Totally agree with ya bud! I think marvel is gonna bust out some suits yet to be revealed and when i say bust maybe a hulkbuster or thorbuster hmmmmmm? A fanboy can dream:)
mgeoff88 - 11/26/2012, 7:37 PM
That part about his new IM suit... I at least I thought I had that figured out, no I'm not so sure.

@thewonderer What's wrong with happy/light hearted endings? Iron Man almost died in The Avengers. And he's going to have more problems to deal with in IM3.

Tony deserves a vacation and a happy ending.

@marvel72 *Claps*Well said.

@HalloweenJack Great panel. That's one of the main reasons I'm a huge fan of Tony Stark/Iron Man.
Kayo - 11/26/2012, 8:05 PM

I knew it was 47 and not 42.
breakUbatman - 11/27/2012, 6:14 AM

Happy/light-hearted endings are fine (cue Teabag)

TDK and Captain America are the only CBMs I can think of that end on a down note per se.

Batman Begins had an awesome ending ("...and you'll never have to!" - Bat-Lawyered)

TDKR while controversial was the ultimate happy ending - he got the girl, made Alfred's dream come true, saved the orphans and left Gotham with a Legend.

Iron Man - "I am Iron Man" that upbeat ending is flawless

The journey to get to the end is what is important in my books if he goes through the ringer then he deserves a happy ending.

As much as I enjoyed Avengers, Joss Whedon pulled a fast one with Tony Stark. Iron Man was all about Tony's change of heart and him doing what was right because it was right - but then in Avengers we're told he's selfish again and he has to 'sacrifice himself' to prove himself. That's some B.S. I want character development not regression.
Fogs - 11/27/2012, 11:00 AM
@breakUbatman - Nah, I disagree. What Tony was at the beginning was a bad teamplayer and that's it. The image Cpt. Rogers had of him wasn't absolute. He was already a hero and a more grown up guy - I doubt he wouldn't tap widow or Hill in the old times :).

He had to enhance his teamplaying, which he did during the Helicarrier attack and in the NY crisis.
Azazel1 - 11/27/2012, 11:32 AM
It doesn't have a chance of approaching Nolan's batman greatness level but hey, should be good...
PeterParker1991 - 12/14/2012, 7:22 PM
Nice to see the "Extremis" storyline will be featured. Always wondered how that'd be done on screen. And I nearly forgot how many armors Stark had. Wonder if we'll ever see the infamous "Hall of Armors" on screen
