New IRON MAN 3 Details, Filming Locations, Two Minor Cast Additions And More Revealed

Verifying Chinese actor Andy Lau's role, along with minor cast additions, a Hong-Kong-based newspaper has revealed new details surrounding the production of Iron Man 3, including the villain!

Following reports that Chinese actor-singer Andy Lau had landed a Scientist role in Marvel Studios' next outing post-The Avengers, Iron Man 3, Hong-Kong-based newspaper Apple Daily has confirmed the role, in addition to more production details. Praising the amount of screen time Andy will supposedly have, the report adds that Chinese actresses Fan Bingbing and Yang Mi are joining the Shane Black-directed threequel as as Andy’s wife and assistant respectively. What's rather more interesting in the report (transcribed via AndyLauSounds) says:

The film will have location shooting in Beijing and Shanghai, it will narrates that the daughter of Robert Downey Jr.’s friend was kidnapped and brought to China, in order to save his friend’s daughter, he flew over from America to China to seek help from Andy to strengthen his abilities to fight The Mandarin. You will see Iron Man fly over The Great Wall of China, National Palace Museum & other landmarks in Shanghai May 2013

Although veteran actor Ben Kinglsey's role has yet to be disclosed, the report lists The Mandarin. Suggesting why the villain won't be of Chinese descent, a la his source material, the reports explains:

In order not to hurt the feelings of Western and Chinese audience, the story will not focus so much on the villain’s background as not to display the Chinese as evil. [The production] had already got approval from the State Administration of Radio Film and Television in order to be shot, all contents that harms Chinese image had been “removed”, this explains why the villain will be a bit different from the original comic

Described as a “technological crisis thriller,″ set in the world of international war, arms & terror, Marvel Studios' “Iron Man 3″ stars Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Guy Pearce, Rebecca Hall, Andy Lau, Ashley Hamilton, James Badge Dale, with Sir Ben Kingsley and Jon Favreau. Shane Black (“Kiss Kiss Bang Bang”) takes over directorial duties from Jon Favreau, who helmed the first two “Iron Man” films. Principal photography will occur primarily in North Carolina and China. And “Iron Man 3″ is set for release in May 3, 2013.

If done right this sounds fine. :D
ManOfKrypton - 5/18/2012, 1:31 PM
Sounds like the wussed out on the Mandarin! I wouldn't be surprised if this was another IM2.
PartyHard - 5/18/2012, 1:35 PM
Wussed out on using a shitty villain that nobody cares about? That's fine with me.
MovieMaster - 5/18/2012, 1:37 PM
This sounds convoluted.
PaulRom - 5/18/2012, 1:43 PM
Kingsley playing Mandarin after all? Awesome. What superotherside said, this should work fine if done right.
Zarog - 5/18/2012, 1:44 PM
Seriously? Screw China. Just don't release it there. Also, this movie is getting way too big. Extremis storyline, the Mandarin, and Coldblood. Too much stuff to work in well. The Extremis story itself is big enough for one movie. Unless they are just setting up the Mandarin to be fully shown in the 4th movie (hopefully) I can't really say I'm pleased.
marvel72 - 5/18/2012, 1:51 PM
mandarin = awesome, fingers crossed they don't alter him too much.
JordanKing - 5/18/2012, 1:59 PM
I'm not that bothered about the villain, but what concerns me the most, is from that description, it appears as though some kid is central to the plot of the film. Where there's smoke..
santoanderson - 5/18/2012, 2:00 PM
I bet the Chinese government still finds something in the movie offensive enough to block it's release. TDK was partially shot in Hong Kong, and China still pulled it from cinemas because the Mr. Lau character paid off some cops.

@ironman666 - TMI dude.... TMI.
Marvelfreek94 - 5/18/2012, 2:01 PM
Mandarin is my least favorite Iron Man villain. Magvic vs. Tech doesnt do much for me. I prefer ttanium man or crimson dynamo but we shall see.
masterhater - 5/18/2012, 2:01 PM
Don't want to hurt China's feelings. How stupid!
Sanderman - 5/18/2012, 2:02 PM

ManofSteel23 - 5/18/2012, 2:04 PM
I hate it when they bring china into films, because all they do is do karate shite, thats why the 2rd mummy was so shite
Benjamitesandwich - 5/18/2012, 2:13 PM

For someone whose username is "MarvelFreak," it's surprising that you don't know that Manarin's rings are NOT magic, but technology developed from an alien race. Tech vs tech, not tech vs magic.

Thank god I have an Asian gf FTW!

zachshivey - 5/18/2012, 2:31 PM
I like grifs idea....
95 - 5/18/2012, 2:31 PM
That's actually a really good idea @grif.
Tomontherun99 - 5/18/2012, 2:38 PM
well surely it's ideal to make a film that offends no one anyway?
Moakynubs - 5/18/2012, 2:47 PM
Too bad it's not Japan, or they could do some sweet references to 2099 and Stark-Fujikawa. ..Well, his friend could still be Japanese. Who knows? 2099 movies would be cool.
johnmarston - 5/18/2012, 2:48 PM
i like positive grif...
DoomXfactor - 5/18/2012, 2:57 PM
TheManWithBigEars - 5/18/2012, 2:59 PM
@ Grif

They did that in the Ultimate universe
soforizo - 5/18/2012, 3:03 PM
The Chinese government is overly sensitive with national image. But in fairness, the usual political correctness crap in the States would've brought bad press to this movie as well.

Heck some retards were offended with Thor's comment that Loki was adopted. And Shane Black thought the Mandarin is racist, so I'm surprise that he of all people would bring any version of him at all.

So I guess a version of the character, is better than never having him onscreen at all.

rondz123 - 5/18/2012, 3:03 PM
@SUPERARGO whos the chick with the butterfly tat.
soforizo - 5/18/2012, 3:05 PM

I like your idea Grif. I really looking forward to the Leader after TIH.
TheMyth - 5/18/2012, 3:07 PM
Movie isn't even filming yet and the pussy haters are already out in full force. Well, [frick] you bitches. There is a reason you don't write comics or make movies you know, because you'd suck at it. So instead of acting like babies why don't you, I don't know, sit back and wait for actual news to get ruffled over. Nevermind, forgot who I was talking too, a load of fatass, pimple-faced virgins who'd find something to complain about with a blowjob from Megan Fox.
ManThing - 5/18/2012, 3:15 PM
yep. They wussed out on the Mandarin.. Too bad

584129 - 5/18/2012, 3:17 PM
Wonder who the friend is...
spidey1994 - 5/18/2012, 3:31 PM
If he's not Chinese, what's the point of of calling him The Mandarin?
Necroxide - 5/18/2012, 3:43 PM
Big HOPE for the mandarin !
TheGambitFreak - 5/18/2012, 3:46 PM
@Necroxide Do you have a full pic of your avatar? It's beautiful.
CapsUnknownSidekick - 5/18/2012, 3:46 PM
Unless I missed something (which is possible) the Mandarin has been overdue for an update. If they managed to get an actor of Ben Kingsley's caliber to breath life into the role; then more power to them.
MatchesMalone1989 - 5/18/2012, 4:03 PM
Ten Rings Hath The Mandarin!!!!!!!!!!!
AlexDeLarge87 - 5/18/2012, 4:06 PM
Man i [frick]ing hate political correctness!:(

Its great to see Lau join the cast and Kingsley as the main villain. But the reasons why Mandarin cant be Chinese are ridiculous.
Just stop being pussies! If china wants to complain let them [frick]ing complain! Its there shame!

They werent complaining when Jet Li played evil Emperor Mummy who wanted to rule the world.
They werent complaining when Nicolas Cage played Fu Manchu in Grindhouse.
Why would they [frick]ing complain now.
AlexDeLarge87 - 5/18/2012, 4:08 PM
Cary Hiroyuki Tagawa would be great Mandarin.
AlexDeLarge87 - 5/18/2012, 4:09 PM
Or Collin Chou (The bad guy from The Forbidden Kingdom)
MatchesMalone1989 - 5/18/2012, 4:17 PM
Ten Rings Hath The Mandarin!!!!!!!!!!!!
SupLezz - 5/18/2012, 4:37 PM
this movie needs more white chicks...

Ha1frican - 5/18/2012, 4:43 PM
It still amazes me that Iron Man 2 has snowballed in people's minds so bad that it's trashed as bad as it is. It isn't as good as the first and feels a bit rushed but it's still one of the better CBM's to daate. Beats the hell outta the nightmare that was First Class... don't know how that continuity nighmare/character rape slipped through the cracks
