IRON MAN 3 MARVEL SHOWCASE - Recap/Description

IRON MAN 3 MARVEL SHOWCASE - Recap/Description

I went to the Iron Man 3 Marvel Showcase in London tonight. We were gifted with footage from Thor 2, Captain America 2, Guardians of The Galaxy and the first 10 minutes of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D

So it was one of the hottest days in London, not the best time to be cramped together in the tube. Along with sprinting to the Disney offices, it wasn’t the most pleasant experience. Luckily waiting for us were two cold beers. We were lead into the Auditorium and sat back and relaxed.

First of all they showed off the Agent Carter Marvel One-Shot, which Carries on a year after Captain America. Most of the stuff you’ve seen in the clips, but it’s definitely the funniest and best Marvel One-Shot yet, bringing back the charm of the 40’s setting.

After showing off a few special features and a gag reel we were shown a scene from Thor 2 followed by a lengthy trailer. There was a real Game of Thrones/Lord of The Rings vibe, yet still feeling a lot like a Thor movie. A big stone giant strides up to Thor before letting out some sort of roar, in with Thor replies with “I accept your surrender!” all of the warriors on the battle ground laugh. A lot of the footage we had already seen in the officially release trailers, apart from a clip of Loki betraying Thor and kicking him to the ground.

We were then given a scene and a lengthy trailer for Captain America 2. It was the elevator scene. Steve Rogers waits in an elevator as more and more men start to slowly make their way. Once it is full Cap says “Before we start, does anyone want to get off?” And so begins the close combat! Crossbones gets out some Tasers and starts stunning Cap as each man grabs him, as he takes each man down with small punches and kicks in the enclosed space. A man gets a magnet out of his briefcase and attaches it to Caps hand. Cap almost manages to fight the magnetic force, but eventually reduced to kicking and punching with his left hand. After taking out most the guys it’s just Cap and Crossbones left. Crossbones says to Cap “This is nothing personal” while he Taser’s Cap multiple times, Cap replies with “It kinda feels personal” before pulling the Magnet away from the metal and finishing Crossbones. He kicks up his shield and it attaches to the magnet on his wrist. He walks out. The trailer had a lot of quick shots, but the most noticeable parts were Falcon jumping off a building and then while in the air huge wings come from his back and he glides away, the Helicarrier crashing into the sea and a metallic hand picking up Captain America’s shield right at the end… to reveal Winter Soldier with smudged black paint around his eyes.

Then it was the Guardians of The Galaxy footage… a man walks into an alien temple, walking up to some sort of stone monument with a spherical item on top. It is revealed to be Peter Quill. He picks up the item and turns around to find three armed men (I assume Nova corps). One of them asks “WHAT IS YOUR NAME?” Peter Quill replies with “….Star-Lord…” the officer asks “Who?” Quill replies with “Come on… Sta-oh, nevermind”. We are then introduced to each character as they are lined up. It was the same footage from Comic Con, Rocket Raccoon standing on Groot’s shoulders as he fires his gun, Peter Quill with his top off looking stacked, and eventually a shot with all of them lined up together. We see John C Reilly stating what Quill was arrested for. Quill slowly pretends to rotate a handle while his middle finger comes up. He stares at the middle fingers with a shocked expression and says “Oh… I’m sorry… I didn’t know how this machine worked”.

Finally we watched the first 10 minutes of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. From what we saw it seemed to be extremely promising. There were nice ties to the MCU, the special effects were EXTREMELY impressive for a TV Show and the humour was satisfying; “technically… I don’t think Thor is a God” Maria Hill: “Have you been next to his arms?... He’s a God”. If you’re a fan of Whedon’s TV shows you’ll LOVE Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. We didn’t see anything on how Coulson came back, but his entrance was heroic… and hilarious.

I unfortunately can’t go into more detail because I was too busy getting my mind blown. But from what I saw, Phase Two looks far from a disappointment, with both Thor 2 and Cap 2 looking extremely better than the first instalments.

GotG and Cap2 are sounding and looking beast!
FlashhGordon27 - 9/5/2013, 3:00 PM
I knew I'd like the look of Captain America 2 but I didn't realise how... BIG it would be! I actually had my hands over my mouth in shock.
92Marvel - 9/5/2013, 3:04 PM
I can't wait for all of the phase 2 movies especially gotg because its something different.

I wonder what marvel has in mind for phase 3
FlashhGordon27 - 9/5/2013, 3:06 PM
@92Marvel I personally loved Iron Man 3 and I can understand why fans hated it. But Phase Two so far looks better than Phase One. I'm intrigued as to how Wright will tackle Ant-Man. I'm also looking forward to seeing how Strange Adapts to screen... I guess they've successfully adapted Thor, so strange can't be too hard.
jerryblake - 9/5/2013, 3:09 PM
wonder what kind of fighting technique will Captain use in that elevator scene. Sounds like Krav Maga to me, but i'm not an expert.
FlashhGordon27 - 9/5/2013, 3:11 PM
I wish I recorded it so I could like back at it and remember it more. I'm not gonna lie I was pretty much overloaded with too much awesome I think my brain had a melt down. I couldn't believe how epic the Helicarrier crash scene looked. It was like the IM3 mansion scene x1000
StingyFox - 9/5/2013, 3:15 PM
@jerryblake

I'd take anything over that gymnastics crap.
92Marvel - 9/5/2013, 3:16 PM
@FlashhGordon27 I agree I liked Iron Man 3 and iron man one my top superheros. I bought that one iTunes right away and that agent carter was the best one-shot marvel has done. I hope they do more like that one.

FlashhGordon27 - 9/5/2013, 3:16 PM
All I can say is... The combat looked like the best yet. And daaayum did the new costume look awesome! (I was sceptical at first)
FlashhGordon27 - 9/5/2013, 3:17 PM
@92Marvel good man! And yeah definitely! If they played it right they could start introducing minor characters in them. It was really impressive, excited to watch it again on Monday!
MrCBM56 - 9/5/2013, 3:17 PM

MrCBM56 - 9/5/2013, 3:18 PM

2nd the amazing spider-man 2
3rd x-men:days of future past

FlashhGordon27 - 9/5/2013, 3:20 PM
My description really doesn't do the cap trailer justice haha. But as I said, it really does feel and LOOK like Avengers 1.5
MrCBM56 - 9/5/2013, 3:24 PM
Phase 3=

Ant Man
Doctor Strange
Indestructible Hulk
Thor 3
Cap 2
Inhumans
Avenger 3

Phase 4 should be based off the Marvel Knights
Daredevil
Heroes for Hire
Ghost Rider
Blade
The Punisher
Black Panther

I count Black Panther as a Marvel Knight for some reason...It fits him better IMO.

FlashhGordon27 - 9/5/2013, 3:26 PM
I'd love a Hulk film titled "Indestructible Hulk" and yeah, I really want a decent Ghost Rider film. I think they should stop with Avengers 3 then branch off into more solo films, still in the same universe though.
DioFoRio - 9/5/2013, 3:27 PM
good stuff flash! Can't wait to see this stuff. Love the idea of the black paint as a domino mask.
MrCBM56 - 9/5/2013, 3:28 PM
FlashGordon

I agree. It would be an awesome Easter Egg if in like a Daredevil movie, the 'New York Times' Could have a headline that reads Avengers saves the day again or something like. Something small that let us know that The Avengers are still a team, we're just not focused on them.
FlashhGordon27 - 9/5/2013, 3:29 PM
@dioforio cheers man. Yeah it actually looked great. Was pretty smudged cause he'd clearly been fighting Cap, but he looked sooo good! The shoot of his hand picking up the shield pretty much made everyone gasp haha

ezio619 - 9/5/2013, 4:01 PM
one thing i love is how none of these sound like the other, phase 1 was great but it had the same feel but phase 2 feels different from each other, iron man 3 was an action comedy,Thor The Dark World is more science fiction mixed with fantasy, Cap definitely looks to be political/spy thriller while guardians is a space adventure film, it makes it feel like the comics where each of them had a different tone and i think having different directors, no matte what you think of the movies, helps because it keeps it fresh and it also feels like a new writer has come on for a storyarc and had brought the tone and ideas they want for their story.
ezio619 - 9/5/2013, 5:39 PM
flashgordon- out of the three phase 2 movies, which got you the most excited? and out of the three superhero films that have come out so far iron man 3, man of steel and the wolverine, how would you rank them?
ezio619 - 9/5/2013, 5:57 PM
blackjack- i love tony and ac/dc as much as the next guy but it would not have fit the tone of the film which rewatching it i realized, the film has this dark undercurrent to it and even during the comedic momnets the serious moments are played straight, but thats your opinion and you are very much entitled to it.
ezio619 - 9/5/2013, 6:09 PM
blackjack- calm down before you HULK out.
ezio619 - 9/5/2013, 6:17 PM
blackjack- i can understand,i also would have wanted the mandarin but i really liked it maybe because i dont go into movies with expectations nowadays so i wasnt expecting anything, i can understand why people did not like the film, i would have like jon favreay for the 3rd film aswell but he wanted to do other projects and can ya blame the guy, he wanted to make movies, not just iron man movies and he is directing a new movie now, yeah the comedic shift to serious shift tone is weird, but thats shane blacks schtick so thats what i sorta expected and when i rewatched it , i felt there was not too many comedic moments , i think he thing is the kid stuff and the trevor stuff is close together and they run long so thats why people felt it was too comedic or maybe i was used to it and did not notice it, i think alot of this film is based on taste and there is nothing anyone can do about that, alot of people loved to like the film, some think its ok and some people dont like it like man of steel and even a little bit in the wolverine, this has been a dvisive year in superhero films, you cant make everyone happy on anything, but hopefuly thor and next year superhero films are more positive though.
ezio619 - 9/5/2013, 6:19 PM
i think thor and cap might more akin to the tone of marvel studios we know, but i think guardians might be the one that has a werid tone and a more james gunn tone of irreverant humor and weird, insane stuff so im concerned that people might not care for that but lets hope for the best.
gost - 9/5/2013, 7:27 PM
So the Helicarrier crashes again, that thing falls out of the sky every couple of days or what.
AvengersRock - 9/5/2013, 7:56 PM
Thanks for the descriptions and for the pics. They all sound awesome! Really looking forward to all these Phase 2 movies, but probably GOTG the most, and then of course A2:AOU. I'm sure Joss is thinking about how to top the first Avengers. It may be an impossible task , or maybe he'll find a way. Since he's known for a long time how he was going to handle Ultron, I'm betting it will blow our minds....again!
seven43861 - 9/5/2013, 8:23 PM
You do realize that most critics helmed Iron Man 3 to be a spiritual successor to Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Not a successor to Iron Man 2 though, does no-one see the problem.
Tymminator - 9/5/2013, 8:29 PM
Great stuff here.
ezio619 - 9/5/2013, 8:43 PM
seven- chitty chitty bang bang was on old film, i think you mean kiss kiss bang bang.

gost- yeah i know right,it falls like every tuesday
seven43861 - 9/5/2013, 10:15 PM
Whatever [frick]ing movie Shane Black did before [frick]ing this series up.
FlashhGordon27 - 9/5/2013, 10:34 PM
@ezio619 I thought they all looked equally amazing, I actually couldn't pick one that looked better, but I will say that cap 2 surprised me the most, so part of me is leaning towards that looking the best. But as you mentioned, I love how they all look completely different. You wouldn't look at them and think... These guys will be in another team up together in a few years time.

Out of the 3 main CBM's this year... I'm gonna have to say Iron Man 3. I can see why fans hated it, but I thought it was an enjoyable 80's buddy cop throwback, and the fact it didn't try force itself to lead into Avengers 2 meant it really did feel like a solo Iron Man flick, apart from the links to Avengers ofcourse.

I did love Man of Steel, again I can see why some people didn't. My main criticism is some of the action drags on a bit (cut out the tentacles scene). I'm always open for different interpretations of characters if they work, and I felt it worked. It really reminded me of Earth One and I just loved Earth One.

The Wolverine surprised the hell out of me! Out of marvel comics, x-men is my fave... But out of the movies I only reeeally love X2, First Class is a good film aswell. But The Wolverine played less of a Mutant-based X-Men film and more of a noirish mystery, and it worked! It was good enough to get me excited for DoFP.

But Overall I preferred Iron Man 3.
MightyZeus - 9/5/2013, 11:23 PM
Guardians of the Galaxy sounds great. I'm hyped for the film.
Kayo - 9/5/2013, 11:39 PM
GOTG is my most anticipated movie of 2014 and from the sounds of it, we where in for another thrill ride.

ka nat wiyt.
FlashhGordon27 - 9/6/2013, 5:45 AM
It won't let me update the article, but I forgot to add that in the Thor footage, when Loki betrays Thor, Thor reaches out for Jane and Loki swings down his blade on Thors hand, it cuts to black... sounded a lot like his hand got cut off. But they're probably toying with us.
goldilocks - 9/6/2013, 7:07 AM
They need to add all that to make up for the travesty IM3 was. Can't wait to see some Winter Soldier footage. Sounds promising.
ezio619 - 9/6/2013, 7:46 AM
seven and goldilocks, these movies dont need to make up for im3,they just need to be good films, some people just cant move on.
ezio619 - 9/6/2013, 8:00 AM
seven and goldilocks, this article is for you,http://ronriii.tumblr.com/post/50492140064/aldrich-killian-is-the-mandarin
ezio619 - 9/6/2013, 8:33 AM
flashgordon-exactly, the end credits of iron man 3 tell what the whole film is, its an 80s action comedy with a superhero edge, i think this year has been just very unexpected, we were not expecting studios to break the mold as in Iron Man 3 or re-imagine a character that does not fit some peoples image of that character in MOS or make a tone for a superhero film that was quite different then what came before in The Wolverine, this was nota bad year in my opinion, i think people have blown that this year out of propotion, saying its bad, its just a very unexpected ,surprising , may not be up to some peoples tastes but GOOD year overall imo
