Paul "Jarvis" Bettany Reveals Why Exactly He's Never Watched A Marvel Studios Movie
In an interview with Digital Spy to promote his new film Blood, British actor Paul Bettany has reiterated just how small a role he plays in the Iron Man franchise. While his voice-over work as 'Jarvis' (Tony Stark's AI "butler" of sorts) has become beloved by fans, it may come as a surprise to some of you that he doesn't count himself among them. Below, he discusses just how easy a job it really is for him, making it clear that he knows nothing about the films because he's never sent the full screenplay (however, he was for Marvel's The Avengers - something he describes as "an anomaly"). Bettany also reveals that he's never watched one of the films. Why not? Well, don't worry guys - it's nothing personal..!
Paul Bettany has become well-known to comic book fans for providing the voice of Jarvis, but his role in the Iron Man films is actually very, very small. Here he discusses what it's like to turn up for just a couple of hours to record his lines, being plagued by fans, and why he's never seen the movies.
"I get brought in right at the last moment, where if they've worked out that they have a clarity issue or whatever, they can always add it to [my] dialogue. I feel like a pirate. This is robbery. I walk in, I say some lines on a piece of paper for two hours, and then they give me a bag of money and I leave and I go about my day. I sort of feel guilty, because at least acting can be exhausting, with long hours...but I do nothing! And I've never seen one of them. It's not because of any snobbishness, it's just not my thing. I'm plagued by fanboys who love Jarvis... They come up and I've got no idea what they're talking about. I've got no idea about Iron Man - I don't get sent the whole script."
