Robert Downey Jr. In Talks For THE AVENGERS 2 And 3; Doesn't Want To Return For IRON MAN 4?

Robert Downey Jr. In Talks For THE AVENGERS 2 And 3; Doesn't Want To Return For IRON MAN 4?

While you may have read the article below this one which addresses the fact that The Avengers cast are battling Marvel Studios over monetary issues, another source claims that Robert Downey Jr. is indeed in talks to return for The Avengers 2 and 3, but NOT Iron Man 4. Read on for details!

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Robert Downey Jr. is in talks to return as Tony Stark/Iron Man in The Avengers 2 and The Avengers 3. However, he apparently isn't too keen on taking on another solo movie despite the success of the latest instalment which has so far grossed over $700 million worldwide. Here's the relevant excerpt from their report about the negotiations.

Sources close to the dealmaking say Downey has entered negotiations to reprise his role in Marvel’s The Avengers 2 and The Avengers 3, the first of which has a May 1, 2015, release date and will cap what is known as Phase 2 of the Marvel movies in the same way 2012’s Avengers culminated the first Marvel wave that began with 2008’s Iron Man. Avengers 3 has no release date and probably will not hit screens at least until the end of Phase 3, in 2017. But sources say Iron Man 4 has not been part of the discussions, and it’s unclear whether Downey, 48, wants to return for another stand-alone sequel.

One analyst suggests that a lack of Robert Downey Jr. in their future movies could mean that Marvel Studios lose as much as 9 % of their earnings in the near future. "It would be a definite negative for that particular franchise. He is Tony Stark. The other individual franchises -- Thor, Captain America, Hulk -- etc., don’t have near the level of box-office potential that Iron Man does. The other way to look at it is that Iron Man would probably look more like those other franchises in terms of box-office performance without Downey." The site adds that the studio has scripts in place for Blade, Ms. Marvel, Doctor Strange, Iron Fist, Black Panther and The Runaways. They've also regained the rights to Ghost Rider, Daredevil and Power Man.

As long as he's in the Avengers sequels its all good!
TayDee - 5/7/2013, 3:36 PM
I love how how everybody here actualy BELIEVES every rumor they read, considering 90% of the rumors we read are all false.
FrenzyFreak - 5/7/2013, 3:39 PM
All this contract stuff is getting so blown out of proportion. Marvel will buckle and pay everyone their money, including RDJ. I think he'll be back for A2, A3, and IM4.
ATrueHero1987 - 5/7/2013, 3:43 PM
Wait they already got scripts for Blade and Ms. Marvel?!?!
TheSuperguy - 5/7/2013, 3:46 PM
Glad they're ending it at 3, I want to see other superheroes get some attention now.
LucasMend - 5/7/2013, 3:48 PM
I think is better that way. After the awful Iron Man 3 you can notice that Tony Stark alone needs a break. Leave RDJ' Stark in Avengers 2 and 3 only, Whedon and Favreau know how to use the character. Also, an IRON MAN and HULK team-up would be a huge hit.
But don't [frick]ing reboot stark in his next solo movie, just change the actor or idk.
RAWRG - 5/7/2013, 3:48 PM
They have scripts for Blade, Ms. Marvel, Doctor Strange, Iron Fist, and Black Panther?!!! [frick] YEA!!!!
Invictor - 5/7/2013, 3:51 PM
There's only one more thing Marvel can do.....

......clone him.
MyInnerDork - 5/7/2013, 3:51 PM
This makes perfect sense after studio prez Feige said Phase 3 will focus on heroes who have not had solo movies yet. Phase 3 won't have an Iron Man, Thor or Cap solo movies but they will be in The Avengers 3.
DrDoom - 5/7/2013, 3:51 PM

Studios commonly have placeholder scripts written for projects they're not actively pursuing. These scripts can be later rewritten or replaced entirely when the project enters active development. Given that the Guardians of the Galaxy script went into pre-production as soon as it was written because the studio loved it, something tells me the scripts in place for those other projects are lackluster.
DrDoom - 5/7/2013, 3:52 PM
Besides, Marvel is obviously waiting for MY Ms. Marvel script.
LucasMend - 5/7/2013, 3:53 PM
We don't need a Thor 3 and Iron Man 4, meh. Give us Ms Marvel, Black Phanter, Heroes for Hire, Daredevil etc
Reasonnnn - 5/7/2013, 3:56 PM
@Marauder LETS GET TO WORK. We can do this.
Tevii - 5/7/2013, 3:57 PM
withy all the other Marvel characters, we can phase Iron man out and introduce another character. marvel doesnt have to lose that money at all.
get RDJ for Avengers 2 and 3 and each movie have less and less of him while building up another character. Simple fix
phoenixforce9 - 5/7/2013, 3:57 PM
Unless these are confirmed either by the actor or the studio. They're just hearsay and speculations at this point.
Tevii - 5/7/2013, 3:58 PM
And once RDj is gone, they can split more of that money with the other actors making them happy for a while too
GodzillaKart - 5/7/2013, 3:58 PM
I'd be sad not to see him return for IM4, although I'm not sure where they would go with it. IM3 was damn near perfect and rounded out the character really well.
JorL5150 - 5/7/2013, 3:58 PM
Why bother show up for a movie set when you're worth a few hundren mil?

Sheesh. Id quit too.

Just pay off the favors (erasing bj-for-coke-vids) by phoning in a voiceover for bay~venger 7 and 8.
PsyGuy - 5/7/2013, 3:59 PM
We don't need any more Iron Man movies. MOVE ON
SpectacularJoSh - 5/7/2013, 3:59 PM
Can I have sex with this news? Is it cool if I do? And I want Robert Downey Jr to look.

Oh yeah...I love it...ooh yah,this feels so good...AWWW....AWWW SHIT!!!!!

I'm glad RDJ is reprising his role.

Ramiel - 5/7/2013, 4:01 PM
We don't need a Thor 3? I know I need a Thor 3. I think IM4 will be part of Phase IV.
OrgasmicPotatoe - 5/7/2013, 4:02 PM
Avengers 2 yes
Avengers 3 no

He must die in The Avengers 2. The Mayans said it was either december 21 or Iron Man dies in Avengers 2, and look where we are now, all well and alive past december 21. Iron Man must die in the Avengers 2. Hey Kevin, if you read this, kill Iron Man in the Avengers 2, would be great. He must die in the Avengers 2.
ATrueHero1987 - 5/7/2013, 4:02 PM
Also, Marvel had the rights to Power Man for awhile now.
TheGlove - 5/7/2013, 4:03 PM
2 more Avengers films, you carn't ask any more than that of the fella, he will have done his duty.
TheRedSkull - 5/7/2013, 4:03 PM
Good. They'll only run the character into the ground with a 4th instalment. It's better to keep it to appearances in The Avengers and Cameos.

On another note, I find this an ironic article considering another one was posted before this highlighting the contract disputes and money with their actors being a sign of trouble. I knew it was Bull
DarthOptimus - 5/7/2013, 4:04 PM
Sounds good to me, no need for more Iron Man solo movies, but RDJ needs to be Stark in Avengers movies. Also Ms. Marvel and Black Panther scripts, shut up and take my money.
Nick56 - 5/7/2013, 4:05 PM
after the shitty iron man 3 i have no interest in an iron man 4
DarthOptimus - 5/7/2013, 4:05 PM
I'm really hoping there's more than 3 Avengers movies, at least 5 would be nice.
TheIlluminati - 5/7/2013, 4:05 PM
We DON'T need Iron Man 4
Jhuntdaprodigy - 5/7/2013, 4:08 PM
Robert has did 4 big budget movies as Iron Man now. As exciting and extremely well-paying as that is, I'm sure it gets exhausting at some point. By the time Avengers 3 comes out, presumably in 2017, he'll be 52 years old. He's not getting any younger, and he can't play the role forever unfortunately. Marvel says they'd be perfectly willing to recast Downey, but I don't know if that's a good idea. Robert Downey Jr. IS Tony Stark as far as I'm concerned, I can't imagine the franchise still being AS successful without him. Now granted, none of the other solo movies will probably do as well as Iron Man 3, but I think Thor: The Dark World and Captain America: The Winter Soldier both are going to bring in some serious bank to Marvel Studios, and Marvel is slowly starting to introduce more characters. After RDJ appears in Avengers 3, I think the character will either be killed off, or just fade into the background. I really don't want to see him recasted.
pud333 - 5/7/2013, 4:09 PM
We would have guessed ten years ago that a B-level superhero would become one of Marvel's biggest cash cows?
pud333 - 5/7/2013, 4:10 PM
We= Who
SaxoWolf - 5/7/2013, 4:11 PM
they have a script for BLADE? yeah!

cast this man MARVEL:
InFamouslyCool - 5/7/2013, 4:14 PM
He was the only good thing about Iron Man 3, why would he want to return for a 4th...
CaptainBing - 5/7/2013, 4:15 PM
YYYEEESSSS. this is exactly what needs to happen. no more need for anymore standalone Iron Man film. A trilogy is enough for one character. Downey is definitely need for Avengers 2/3's sake. Now hopefully the others cast members continue with their roles as well. I'm not worried about Ruffalo or Johansson. Now Evans and Hemsworth are a different story....
DanteSparda - 5/7/2013, 4:15 PM
Not complaints, I prefer watching him in The Avengers than having another Iron Man movie when we could have Dr. Strange, Black Panther, Heroes for Hire, Ms. Marvel, Daredevil, Punisher, Namor or another solo Hulk.

But still I think this and the previous rumor are bogus.
rocky - 5/7/2013, 4:15 PM
Who ever was under the illusion that he'd be IM forever needs to wake up.

I wouldn't mind if they use him for Avengers 2 and then change the roster
MrPiccolo - 5/7/2013, 4:16 PM
@levi absolutely love that cough of yours concerning hulk.

I believe after the avengers the hulk has a tremendous chance of being a huge blockbuster. Dragging their feet in that is stupid as hell
Comicmoviesrlz - 5/7/2013, 4:18 PM
We would have guessed ten years ago that a B-level superhero would become one of Marvel's biggest cash cows?

It all because of RDJ.
