Robert Downey Jr. Shares More IRON MAN 3 Thoughts

Now asserting that the superhero threequel goes back to its “comic-book roots,” Iron Man 3 star Robert Downey Jr. discusses doing his own stunts, his ankle injury, The Mandarin and more.

UK’s first weekly lad magazine, Nuts, recently spoke with Robert Downey Jr. in anticipation of next summer’s much-awaited Iron Man 3 techno-thriller. The ‘Tony Stark’ actor was first questioned how tough was principal photography, which wrapped this month, to which Downey replied, “I’ve always said that while I’m physically able, I want to do all my own stunts in the movies that I make. I want the audience to sit there, thinking, ‘was he really stupid enough to attempt that?’ I actually hurt my ankle in a stunt and filming was shut down for a few days.”

Director and co-writer Shane Black had previously proclaimed his entry to the Iron Man franchise is considered an international, crisis thriller. That classification being much different from the 2010 sequel, Robert Downey Jr. asserts, “I think Shane’s gone for a dark feel in this movie. It’s a lot grittier and goes back to its comic-book roots. It’s shaped into a really special movie - and Shane as been instrument in that.”

About his antagonist, the Ten Rings terrorist leader, The Mandarin, and his portrayal by Oscar-winner Sir Ben Kingsley, Downey declares, “I always think there's something more terrifying about a villain who's a genius, as opposed to just relying on strength or ability. We all know what a fantastic actor Ben Kingsley is, and he pulls off the evil genius with real terrifying results.”

Lastly, Robert Downey Jr. was facetiously asked what would he do if he had the actual Iron Man suit for just a day, in which the two-time Academy Award-nominated actor replied, “You know, you guys are probably looking for a really cool answer, but I live in Malibu and traffic getting into LA can be crazy. I'd use it just to fly straight into the city for a meeting or dinner.”

Marvel Studios’ “Iron Man 3” pits brash-but-brilliant industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds. When Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy’s hands, he embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible. This journey, at every turn, will test his mettle. With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him. As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man? Starring Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Guy Pearce, Rebecca Hall, Stephanie Szostak, James Badge Dale with Jon Favreau and Ben Kingsley, “Iron Man 3” is directed by Shane Black from a screenplay by Drew Pearce & Shane Black and is based on Marvel’s iconic Super Hero Iron Man, who first appeared on the pages of “Tales of Suspense” (#39) in 1963 and had his solo comic book debut with “The Invincible Iron Man” (#1) in May of 1968. “Iron Man 3” is presented by Marvel Studios in association with Paramount Pictures & DMG Entertainment. Marvel Studios’ President Kevin Feige is producing & Jon Favreau, Louis D’Esposito, Stephen Broussard, Victoria Alonso, Alan Fine, Charles Newirth, Stan Lee & Dan Mintz are executive producers. The film hits May 3, 2013, & is distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures.

You might want to make an edit to this sentence:

I actually hurt my ankle in a stunt and filming was shit down for a few days.”
masterhater - 12/26/2012, 9:31 AM

Why wouldn't the first question be "When do you go into negotiations with Marvel for IM4-6, Avengers 3 and Additional Appearances"

RDJ really helped give birth to the MCU..i hope they dump a truckload of Disney bucks on his porch to keep him around.
FightAs0ne - 12/26/2012, 10:07 AM
I like Iron Man but he has nothing on Captain America ;)

Jaspion - 12/26/2012, 10:34 AM

RDJ is Tony! Who ever takes his place has huge shoes to fill.
FightAs0ne - 12/26/2012, 1:45 PM
@Nomis Yes. The very same Alison Brie.
Jollem - 12/26/2012, 2:51 PM
i think josh brolin would make a better tony stark easily. he'd be more mature and suave and debonair like the tony from the comics(pre-rdjr.-izing of the character after the movies)

rdj's voice sounds off for tony stark. i like the voice in the ultimates cartoon more

but i think mostly, the general audiences knowledge of iron man begins and ends with robert downey jr., so...
lapress - 12/26/2012, 2:59 PM
@FightAsOne When did she take this picture? Where was I when this was taking place?
YoungThanos - 12/26/2012, 3:25 PM
This is among the millions of reasons why all rights should revert back to Marvel!

Can't wait!
RonSwanson - 12/26/2012, 3:31 PM
Very cool. I love his answer to the last question, it seems so...practical. RDJ always comes off as a cool, classy guy.
RonSwanson - 12/26/2012, 3:31 PM
Also, that pic of Alison Brie as Cap is the coolest thing I've seen all day. Yes please
IgnurRant - 12/26/2012, 4:38 PM
Where were going we don't need sweaters.. or hoody's.. or jackets. (Doc Emmet Brown voice)

GetsugaTensho22 - 12/26/2012, 7:04 PM
I just hope the movie doesn't have him be "traumatised" from the events of Avengers. I mean, seriously, he was joking around and they saved the day. It didn't even go beyond New York and there's nothing for him to be mopey about.
Jollem - 12/26/2012, 9:07 PM
@JStark - didn't rdjr. already "put his life on the line" and have a near-death experience in iron man 1? maybe remembering yinsen for a second would be nice?
mgeoff88 - 12/26/2012, 10:57 PM
That sounds great! From what I've seen, RDJ is right on the money. I think IM3 will really be something special.

@Nomis Hubba, hubba...
Jollem - 12/26/2012, 11:28 PM
@JStark - that'd be neat with the dreams being about yinsen, or even a flashback or just mentioning him in any way would be cool. there was an iron man comic i skimmed through where tony said "yinsen one" as a voice code for a suit. i thought that was pretty cool

is there any solid information that tony is all messed up over aliens? i don't think i heard a definite answer. but really, tho...aliens messed him up? i'm not so sure that'll be it

it WOULD be a shocking experience to see aliens, let alone combat them. but mr. stark should be used to things like this by now. he has been aware of the hulk for quite some time, met and fought not only an alien, but an alien god-thing with beautiful hair, and his technology was on par with any of the alien/robot hybrids' tech. he was even cracking some jokes the whole time during and after battling them. he was even chowing down on some shwarma while civilians were probably crushed under rubble from buildings and have rebar sticking through their heads. i don't believe he gives the crap about the aliens at all, actually

tho, i could be wrong. it's happened before :)
Jollem - 12/26/2012, 11:49 PM
“I think Shane’s gone for a dark feel in this movie. It’s a lot grittier and goes back to its comic-book roots."

also, rdjr. is saying here that the movie will be dark and gritty, this is something often scrutinized about nolans' movies that are hated by some. and with his own silver tongue, robert is saying that the iron man movies have strayed from their roots-the whole "source material" hoopla thing that is often times the subject of debate
Jollem - 12/27/2012, 2:20 AM
@JStark - maybe just the mass chaos and destruction in general? maybe coulson dying?
pepe - 12/27/2012, 6:02 AM
Hey!!!! ... You meen Coulson´s dead???
FrenzyFreak - 1/6/2013, 2:26 PM
Nothing to be mopey about?! He was almost killed several times, Coulson died, and thousands of innocent civilians were murdered in the process of them saving the world. It would be impractical for this movie to go about pretending like nothing horrific happened.
