Shane Black And Cast Characterize Roles In IRON MAN 3

Empire magazine's latest issue features comments from principal Iron Man 3 cast members Sir Ben Kingsley, Gwyneth Paltrow and Don Cheadle about their roles + characterizations from the director!

Along with new production stills, the latest issue of Empire magazine features a highlight on Marvel's first Phase Two outing, Iron Man 3. Following The Avengers, director Shane Black says, "Tony Stark is [now] relying on these suits to feel like he's in any way capable. He surrounds himself with these things almost like a blanket. In The Avengers, he fought aliens, but he was the one character I would not have picked to fight aliens. Now we've taken advantage of the fact that he's fought aliens and he talks about it." Iron Man 3 will also flesh out Tony's relationship with former assistant and current CEO of Stark Industries, Pepper Potts, whom Gwyneth Paltrow says, "Adores Tony, but she absolutely gets fed up with him. He gets caught in a feedback look."

Played by Sir Ben Kingsley, The Mandarin is described as a Colonel uber-terrorist; or as Kingsley puts it, "A pastiche of American iconography. It's there to confuse - you don't know what's coming next. Shane allowed me to push the boundaries of the role so that I'm allow to go a bit bonkers."

The Mandarin's actions in Iron Man 3, and the military's inability to help during The Avengers' alien attack, prompts the President of the United States, who Empire confirms is played William Sadler, to give James "Rhodey" Rhodes' War Machine a new red, white and blue paint job. Enters Iron Patriot: a name that, according to Don Cheadle, doesn't bode well with Tony Stark. "The name makes as much sense as Iron Man," Cheadle laughed. "It's a new and interesting look. I don't know how, personally, I'd feel about being draped in the flag, but Rhodey doesn't care what the paint job is like. He just wants it to do what it does."

The Iron Patriot, however, is no help when one of Stark's other close friends gets attacked by The Mandarin, forcing Tony out of hiding. Apparently, Stark instantly "issues a 'come and have a go if you think you're hard enough' challenge to The Mandarin" on live television. "Robert's portrayal of Tony is ultimately the American cowboy who defies authority, thinks for himself and is fiercely individualistic," adds director Shane Black. "That's an America we like to believe in, which is why The Mandarin, who hates America, is a good match for Tony in this movie." Be sure to pick up the Empire mag' for more!

With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him. Sounds perfect. I like this new direction. I like Marvel Studios' inclusion of the Iron Patriot into their universe. I also like that term, "über-terrorist".

@batz11 My money's on Happy Hogan.
DCMarvelFreshman - 2/25/2013, 1:03 PM

@Dcmarvelfreshman so it's happy? i cant find this issue anywhere so is it him? And also are there anymore cool tidbits from the issue or is this it?
TheFascinatingMan - 2/25/2013, 1:08 PM
So is Aldrich Killain going to be working with the Mandarin by making extremis soldiers? Maybe Tony is asked to come in and work on it and discovers wha they're doing?

Jeez, I don't know. I understand less of this movie then I did last year w/ Avengers. :(
FrenzyFreak - 2/25/2013, 1:09 PM
@dcmarvelfreshman Also did the article specify if he's just attacked or does he also die?
SageMode - 2/25/2013, 1:11 PM

shiverman20 - 2/25/2013, 1:16 PM
I've said it before but, how will non-readers react to there being two characters now with an American flag as a costume in the same series of films? I know we love the idea as comic book readers, but I was thinking about if it might be a bit too much for those who don't know the books?
StrangerX - 2/25/2013, 1:17 PM
This is looking better everyday
DCMarvelFreshman - 2/25/2013, 1:23 PM

NeoBaggins - 2/25/2013, 1:31 PM
Best Iron Man of the trilogy. Best Stark representation and Downey's best performance in the role.

Calling it.

When is the exact due date for the new trailer?
JatevinM - 2/25/2013, 2:02 PM
I know this is about to be an unpopular comment that is going to garner some less than nice responses, but in the nearly 5 years that we have had a black President can someone please tell me why almost every President in film and media are still white? I mean can we at least recognize some diversity when it comes to the role of President? Its ok to elect a black man but not show him on screen?
TheAbomination - 2/25/2013, 2:05 PM
Also, thanks for that link, DCMarvelFreshman!!
DanteSparda - 2/25/2013, 2:10 PM
Looks like Black knows his shit, got me even more interested in the plot.

So the U.S. president isn't Obama? Wonder who would be, or if it's a fictional president...
NeoBaggins - 2/25/2013, 2:15 PM
@JatevinM Morgan Freeman AND Danny Glover we're film Presidents. What are you talking about?

James Earl Jones

D.B. Woodside

Chris Rock

Zues Tiny Lister

Even Terry Cruse played a [frick]ed up Pres in an awful comedy that always came on, on the comedy channel. Ironically.
thenerdicon4 - 2/25/2013, 2:27 PM
I am so excited for this film! I was really Skeptical at first because recently the 3rd movie in a trilogy has disappointed me. Spider-Man 3 The Dark Knight Rises (not as bad as SM3 but was definitely the weakest of the trilogy and DID NOT live up to the hype) So I am still very Skeptical, i just wanna see the Mandarin doing some damage in the next trailer. Woo! Bring it on!
alecwright - 2/25/2013, 2:33 PM
How pissed off are the Marvel fanboys that MANDARIN isn't being played by an asian actor?
alecwright - 2/25/2013, 2:35 PM

You're skeptical because of the '3rd movie in a trilogy' thing, and not because Iron Man 2 was horrible???
DanteSparda - 2/25/2013, 2:42 PM

Also X-Men 3, Blade 3, Batman Forever and Superman 3, but the lastest 2 also created the law of the fourth film which it's destined to be worse than the third.
thenerdicon4 - 2/25/2013, 2:59 PM
@alecwright. 1. Actually Ben Kingsly is half Asian he is part Indian :) Indian is in Asia!
2. I am one of the few people who enjoyed that movie. Yeah it wasn't as good as the first, but I enjoyed it. If this Trilogy is playing by a different set of rules and the second one is the worst and then that means the 3rd is either gonna be the best, or just ok and the 1st will either be considered the ok one or the best one.
alecwright - 2/25/2013, 3:07 PM
So is Mandarin an Indian language?
thenerdicon4 - 2/25/2013, 3:12 PM
@alecwright. I won't judge until I see how it is explained in the movie. there is obviously gonna be a reason, I doubt it won't be mentioned. From looking at his costume and tattoos he likes taking other peoples cultures and perverting them so much as to call himself the Mandarin. What better way to mind [frick] your enemies? he seems to want to take on America and maybe he is trying to look like all the enemies America has had, a bit middle eastern, a bit chinese, a bit everything and the cap tatt on his neck with the Anarchy symbol seems awesome.
LAXtremest - 2/25/2013, 4:31 PM
Iron Man 2 was not horrible. Just wasn't as good as Iron Man.
ChanchoMcGrady - 2/25/2013, 4:37 PM
There have been plenty of black presidents on film. In addition to those that NeoBaggins mentioned, Jamie Foxx will play the president in "White House Down" next year.
Even Chris Rock played the President once. People need to quit pulling the race card in situations where there's no discrimination!
alecwright - 2/25/2013, 4:54 PM

I don't have a problem with that. But it's funny how when Tom Hardy was cast as Bane, and the character's look and orgin was changed to fit the director's vision there was an awful lot of complaining from lots of people here. "Bane's supposed to be latino" "He looks nothing like he does in the comics".
NightForce - 2/25/2013, 6:09 PM
They probably used a fictional president because this was being made during the election. I thought Obama would have been president (I remember in the Transformers movies they had Bush and Obama as the presidents).
