Shane Black Discusses IRON MAN 3 Direction; Declares the Film A "Technological Thriller"

Vaguely offering insight to his direction for Marvel Studios' next outing post-The Avengers, Iron Man 3 director Shane Black also comments on the villain. Hit the jump and check it out!

Over in Las Vegas, the annual CinemaCon convention is well underway. And according to ComingSoon, Disney's presentation kicked off with a Marvel Studios feature. Apparently focused on the studios' upcoming slate, a sizzle reel was shown featuring soundbites with head honcho Kevin Feige & Iron Man 3 helmer Shane Black.

Declaring the movie a "technological thriller" and "crisis movie," Black says it's set in the world of "international war, arms and terror." And he adds that they'll "put Tony Stark through the wringer" as they explore the trials of being Tony Stark. Regarding the villain, Black said he'll be one that will "frighten in today's world."

In other Iron Man 3 news: The Hollywood Reporter suggests that actress Jessica Chastain, who is in talks for a "sexy scientist role," will play a supporting role rather than female lead. That spot belongs only to Gwyneth Paltrow's Virginia Potts, who THR's insiders say will be a beefed-up presence in the new movie.

Iron Man 3 is loosely based on the six-issue "Extremis" story arc written by Warren Ellis. Marvel Studios president of production Kevin Feige says Tony Stark will be "stripped of everything, back against a wall, & has nothing but his intelligence to get him out." Starring Robert Downey Jr. (Tony Stark), Gwyneth Paltrow (Virginia Potts), Don Cheadle (Col. James Rhodes), & Guy Pearce (Aldrich Killian) with Ben Kingsley in "final negotiations" for an undisclosed villain role, Shane Black directs Iron Man's third solo outing into theaters on May 3, 2013!

leftcoastpunk - 4/24/2012, 9:45 PM

Ghost! Save The Mandarin for Avengers 2
BigHec - 4/24/2012, 9:58 PM
@ASHDM hmmmmm I never thought of it like that...would be cool If Mandarin was in Avengers 2..he could like run the masters of evil of something...EPIC!!!

@ARTICLE:"Black said the villain will be one that will frighten in today's world."

SotNatt - 4/24/2012, 10:21 PM
These paternity prophesies are the scariest of all. I wouldn't trust Tony Stark with a pet rock, let alone a child.

Please tell me you all are joking.

I don't see the Mandarin as much of a threat in today's world...unless the threat is China looking to cash in on all their I.O.U.s...
Tainted87 - 4/24/2012, 10:25 PM
The Mandarin CAN be the villain in Iron Man 3 without pissing off the Chinese. Ben Kingsley can portray him as an expatriate living in exile. The name "Mandarin" could be just as erroneous as "Iron Man". In addition, the "Mandarin" identity could be something like the Dread Pirate Roberts.

Truthfully, they don't need to incorporate too much of Mandarin. He's a boring character in his own right, and apart from his powers, no one who hasn't read the comics or read Wikipedia entries even know about him or care to know about him. Not to say obscurity is an excuse not to do a character justice, but he's less interesting than Calendar Man.

I think only Iron Man fans or wannabe Iron Man fans will actually get pissed off if Mandarin isn't in it.
TerminatorMode - 4/24/2012, 10:28 PM
they should just replace paltrow with chastain really

anyways interested to see how they continue the marvel universe post-avengers (ie explanations for what people are doing that is keeping them from appearing in each others lives etc)

A lot of you people seem to twist words or take them too literally. Trust in Marvel.

Will this be in 3D? I kinda don't want it to be, knowing Shane Black will probably post-convert. Honestly, if this gets a press release about it being released in 3D, that'll be the worst aspect of this movie. And this movie is sounding perfect!
95 - 4/25/2012, 12:15 AM
Nanoscientists team up with Mandarin to commit corporate espionage on Stark Industries with Ghost? That's what I'm thinking. And I'm not saying post-conversions are bad, I'd just like to see the cinematographers actually consider the stereospace during filming.
Equivocal - 4/25/2012, 12:27 AM
after seeing snipets of Iron Man in The Avengers and the director; I'm more confident of the next installment of IM, 'extremis' sounds good at this point !
GUNSMITH - 4/25/2012, 2:33 AM
actress Jessica Chastain, who is in talks for a "sexy scientist role," will play a supporting role
pOoPEE - 4/25/2012, 2:35 AM
Yeah just watched Avengers and it was totally awesome. Hulk owns the movie
marvel72 - 4/25/2012, 5:19 AM
mandarin & ghost would be excellent choices for iron man 3.
breakUbatman - 4/25/2012, 5:25 AM
Doesn't Marvel know that fanboys don't like their precious comics to be turned into thrillers? If the world's greatest detective can't be in a crime thriller what makes them think they can put a master engineer in a technological thriller...the nerve.

But seriously now that Avengers is done can we have proper direction in these movies if the villain uses Stark technology I'll be pissed off
MadTitan - 4/25/2012, 5:26 AM
fresh from the Avengers premier, and it totally rocks the fan boy in me....Whedon makes it worthy to be this years CBM king!

now that it's through and i'm totally satisfied with how the film turned out it is epic.

btw have a little patience because there's another awesome treats for you after the title roll, so be sure to stay put or else you'll miss it...

just great, great, great.

nuff said.
RunDTC - 4/25/2012, 5:32 AM
@ElgUaSoN: lol, I don't fear that asshat, just what he could do to the country.
dopemaster - 4/25/2012, 5:50 AM
I think they are setting up Mandarin for IM4. When all is said and done this will be the real IM2. IM2 was more of an IM1.5. Without a Hlk 2 they needed to force a coupel things in order to be ready for the Avengers. I think they will make it up to RDJ- who I believe loves this franchise enough to sign on for more.

Thanos after credits scene up on Youtube:
AlexDeLarge87 - 4/25/2012, 6:08 AM
I bet Guy Pearce (Aldrich Killian) is kinda the villain. And he gets dressed as Ghost.
Ben Kingsley is the man behind the curtains. Hopefully Gene Khan.

I hope Andy Lau joins the movie. He could be villain in the fourth Iron Man.

ELgUaSoN@ Stealth armor would be pretty sweet.
Iceman01 - 4/25/2012, 6:33 AM
Any confirmation on war machine?
acidbath - 4/25/2012, 6:40 AM
The stealth armor looks sweet but iron man isn't large enough to pop radar
acidbath - 4/25/2012, 6:41 AM
Unless stealth means invisible and just no
namicolo - 4/25/2012, 7:03 AM
so im taking the picture of tony above blowing it up and flipping it over so it is readable.

Top right photo reads - Joint Dark Energy Mission. Impact Zone Incident ID/58056

To the left of that is a Picture of Loki with the WOrds CAM. 03_ LOKI

To the left of that is 042 Sf.T255 TESSERACT aka the cosmic Cube

So the only thing you can bring from that is that Loki and the cosmic cube is in it according to the picture above...Unless that is a picture from the avengers than this is a given.
ROBBEATZZZ - 4/25/2012, 7:11 AM

Gerrit - 4/25/2012, 8:20 AM
It would kick ass if Iron Man 3 were some sort of "Crysis meets Splinter Cell" kind of movie.
Ha1frican - 4/25/2012, 8:35 AM
Just make the Mandarin the terrorist head of the ten rings and it fits here and avoids being racist
