VIDEO: Karl Urban Has A Message For DREDD 2 Hopefuls

We heard recently that "discussions were taking place" when it came to a sequel to the much loved DREDD, and now the man behind the helmet (Karl Urban) has put together a video message for fans, updating us on the progress. Check it out after the jump.

Though pretty well received by critics and the public alike, Alex Garland's DREDD failed to make a big enough impact at the box office to warrant a sequel..and most of us thought that was that. But great DVD/Blu-ray sales gave the movie a new lease of life, and suddenly it looked like a (slim) possibility. Now the official "Make a DREDD sequel" petition has over 100,000 signatures, and the actor Karl Urban has put together the following video message thanking fans for their continued support. He promises that "we’re working very very hard to bring you
Dredd 2".

The future America is an irradiated waste land. On its East Coast, running from Boston to Washington DC, lies Mega City One- a vast, violent metropolis where criminals rule the chaotic streets. The only force of order lies with the urban cops called “Judges” who possess the combined powers of judge, jury and instant executioner. Known and feared throughout the city, Dredd (Karl Urban) is the ultimate Judge, challenged with ridding the city of its latest scourge – a dangerous drug epidemic that has users of “Slo-Mo” experiencing reality at a fraction of its normal speed. During a routine day on the job, Dredd is assigned to train and evaluate Cassandra Anderson (Olivia Thirlby), a rookie with powerful psychic abilities thanks to a genetic mutation. A heinous crime calls them to a neighborhood where fellow Judges rarely dare to venture- a 200 story vertical slum controlled by prostitute turned drug lord Ma-Ma (Lena Headey) and her ruthless clan. When they capture one of the clan’s inner circle, Ma-Ma overtakes the compound’s control center and wages a dirty, vicious war against the Judges that proves she will stop at nothing to protect her empire. With the body count climbing and no way out, Dredd and Anderson must confront the odds and engage in the relentless battle for their survival.

If there is a God, this film will be made.
Nadj76 - 4/4/2014, 7:17 AM
Make it so.
Nomis - 4/4/2014, 7:20 AM
AWESOME! DREDD was such a great movie!

But I think it was a victim of coming out after the mega CBM movies of that year, the Avengers, The Dark Knight Returns and Amazing Spiderman.
MrSotoMan - 4/4/2014, 7:22 AM
I guess by next year they can start production, but I wonder what type of budget they are looking for, which I know is the sole reason that is holding back this movie.
Doopie - 4/4/2014, 7:22 AM
really hope it happens. i've said before, if i ever won the euromillions i would offer to fund the sequel
UltimateHunt - 4/4/2014, 7:26 AM
The most underrated CBM of all time
UltimateHunt - 4/4/2014, 7:26 AM
Naw people dont even know he is a CB character, it was the marketing IMO
Ineedrevelation - 4/4/2014, 7:29 AM
Oh God no
SuperCat - 4/4/2014, 7:29 AM
Pleas make this movie happen. Love the first one.

pointman - 4/4/2014, 7:31 AM
I haven't seen it yet, but from what I hear it is a pretty good movie. Thoughts?
Marqy - 4/4/2014, 7:32 AM
Yes Please ! I want more Dredd ! The first one was very very awesome. Too bad it wasnt so successful because then there wouldnt have to be a petition.
GiantNerd - 4/4/2014, 7:34 AM
Love the first Dredd. It was one of very few movies that I thought was actually enhanced by a 3D viewing too. Hope this happens, I'd like to see some of the more crazy aspects of the Dredd universe.

I think DREDD is a little overrated to be honest. However I really do hope that a sequel gets made for the hardcore fans yearning to explore the world of his other antagonists.

It might end up being a DVD sequel. You the scorpion king 2

KaneVonDoom - 4/4/2014, 7:38 AM
If Dredd 2 features the Dark Judges and they market it correctly, it'll be boss!

Rom - 4/4/2014, 7:39 AM
Yeah the first was great, bring another.
Tevii - 4/4/2014, 7:40 AM
Love Karl Urban, Dredd was pretty decent.... But Id much rather him move on to better super heroes.
Super12 - 4/4/2014, 7:43 AM
That's awesome. I wasn't too big of a Dredd fan but this is just cool to see. I hope it works! I'd watch a sequel for sure
BigMikeReviews - 4/4/2014, 7:44 AM
If a sequel does get greenlit, it will probably be working with a budget even more modest than the first one. Still stoked at the possiblity to see Dredd kick more ass
Nomis - 4/4/2014, 7:47 AM
@ UltimateHunt - You know you're right about the marketing, I think I only saw only TV commercial about it and before you know it it was considered a "bomb".
Reni - 4/4/2014, 7:47 AM
Anderson should be back
Nomis - 4/4/2014, 7:53 AM
@ pointman - As many have mentioned, A very underrated movie, but great movie and had more of an edge to it that Sly Stallone version(obviously).

If you ever read or know anything about Dredd from 2000 A.D., this is the closest to a live action true feeling you get about him and megacity from the comics.

It's Gritty. Hardcore. Dark. Violent (But not Stupid or over the top type violence) And even inspiring in it's on way.

There is a scene where Dredd let it be known that "He is the law" to mama and everyone in a confinded building and it will send chills down your spine.

And best of all.... THEY DON"T TAKE HIS HELMET OFF TO REVEAL WHAT HE LOOK LIKE!!!!! (nice nod to the comic tradition there).
JoeMomma29 - 4/4/2014, 7:54 AM
Such a great movie but piss poor marketing. Hopefully if we get a sequel the marketing will be better.
Pasto - 4/4/2014, 7:55 AM
I saw 5 minutes of this film on Netflix and was tempted to hurl my television out of a window. Don't make a sequel.

LMAO! Reminds me of the fur ball running around my house. Still waiting for that thing to croak.
FantasticSpidey - 4/4/2014, 7:56 AM
liked the movie a lot. The thing I loved the most was that he never took his helmet off. Something so cool about a big budget movie never showing the face of their star.
Ineedrevelation - 4/4/2014, 7:56 AM
Damn that movie was garbage from top to bottom. 2nd worst comic adaptation since Batman and Robin.
GiantNerd - 4/4/2014, 7:57 AM

That line was great. I was watching it in theater with my brother and a couple friends I leaned over and said shit just got real.
SkipKahless - 4/4/2014, 7:59 AM
Dredd took down avon barksdale and cersei lannister in one movie. If that doesnt earn you a sequel, what will?
Rulk - 4/4/2014, 8:01 AM
Surprisingly good movie! Hope a sequel happens!
charlie2094 - 4/4/2014, 8:01 AM

You're kidding yourself if you think this is that bad...besides, why a sequel bother you? If you didn't like it then you don't need to see it...

Hope this happens!! Dredd was fantastic, deserves another film for sure...just a question of what sort of budget it has, really hope they pick it up and give it a decent budget/marketing
GeekyCheekyChic - 4/4/2014, 8:02 AM
make it i'll buy a ticket.
Nomis - 4/4/2014, 8:03 AM
@ GiantNerd0720 - LOL!!!!

That phrase cracks me up for some reason.
ImnotDaredevil - 4/4/2014, 8:03 AM
SuperSomething616 - 4/4/2014, 8:03 AM
If there is a Grud...this will be made!!!
SuperSomething616 - 4/4/2014, 8:04 AM
Also Karl Urban...what a guy!!! :)
Rom - 4/4/2014, 8:04 AM
@Pasto It gets better after the first 5 minutes.
@Supercat I like the way you roll.
