D.J. Cotrona Dishes Details On His Superman Suit For Cancelled JUSTICE LEAGUE: MORTAL

D.J. Cotrona (G.I. Joe: Retaliation) talks more about not starring as Superman in WB's canned Justice League: Mortal, revealing new details for the "god-like" suit that he was going to wear and that his relationship with Batman in the ensemble was "the one I always wanted to see."

We previously heard comments from D.J. Cotrona's regrets about not moving on to don the Superman suit for Warner Bros.' now defunct Justice League: Mortal, and during an interview with Cinema Blend, the G.I. Joe: Retaliation actor talks more about the DC Comics ensemble. He's asked about the costume that he was going to wear, and he offers nothing but praise for the suit. He says that his Superman would've been a full-on alien god in the movie, and the suit set off that tone. He also says that Supes' relationship with Batman (who would've been played by Armie Hammer) in Mortal was one that he always wanted to see. The rest of the film's cast included Common as Green Lantern, Megan Gale as Wonder Woman, Adam Brody as The Flash, Hugh Keays-Byrne Martian Manhunter, Santiago Cabrera as Aquaman, Teresa Palmer as Talia al Ghul and Jay Baruchel as Maxwell Lord. "The version of Superman that we were going to build was incredible. We were very much leaning towards alien, you know, not like down and out Clark Kent, but a fully realized alien, alien god. This guy was always flying and the design of the suit was, there was very, very cool subtle details that were really cool, but tonally it was like a god, like the ultimate powerful god and the relationship between Batman and Superman that we were going to make in this movie was the one that I always wanted to see. Still do, still do, man. It’s a damn shame we didn’t get to finish that one. Hopefully it will work out and Warners will be able to put it out eventually."

A separate incarnation of a Justice League movie is in development at Warner Bros., with Christopher Nolan and Zack Snyder reportedly on board as producers. Henry Cavill, who plays Superman in June 14th's Man Of Steel, will likely reprise the role for the superhero ensemble if the reboot is a big hit. Christian Bale has also been rumored to be reprising his role as Batman in the film. Would you have liked to see Justice League: Mortal make it into theaters?

He is no Superman.
LP4 - 4/2/2013, 11:05 AM
He hardly said anything specific design wise about the suit except that it was more alien lol. Kinda hoped for more details. Eh...
imnotahero - 4/2/2013, 11:06 AM
I was so against this movie, but I would love to see what they had been working on in terms of costumes and design.
PsyGuy - 4/2/2013, 11:06 AM
Alien god? No thanks, I love the MoS one!
BigMikeReviews - 4/2/2013, 11:07 AM
Thank god none of that happened
PsyGuy - 4/2/2013, 11:09 AM
Also, did anyone see how much taller Adrianne Palicki (Wonder Woman) was than him?

That would've been funny to see in a JL film.
jbak368 - 4/2/2013, 11:12 AM
I don't really understand all the hate for this project. I think it's a real shame that it didn't happen. It's George [frick]ing Miller man! I can't actually say if it would've been good, but I think it would've at least been an interesting experiment.
DurtyTalynt - 4/2/2013, 11:12 AM
They will probably just make an animated version of the story. Still dont think can pull off a JL movie though. Needs to be 3 hours. No love stories.
Taboggon - 4/2/2013, 11:22 AM
I think this might have been the right approach for a Justice League movie, do it as a standalone film, and not worry about tying various movie series together.
Just because Avengers was a huge success, I don't think that it means EVERYTHING has to follow that team up format.
If you want to do Justice League, just go for it.
xXkryptoniteXx - 4/2/2013, 11:29 AM
Justice league movie can work just do baby steps first, establish the universe with great story and interesting character that people will fall for. Then do a movie with superman, green lantern, flash, Martian manhunter, wonder woman and batman.

Leave batman in the end for a sequel since you don't want his character to over shadow the others since we have superman already. The problem with DC having is that the corporate WB company having different say on all things. The business in north America is commitment of 3 years as a long term goal but realistically for this case it should be 10 years max and 7 years minimum.

WB should hire a director with great vision, passion and talent for DC universe. Have a producer who awknoldge and respect that is needed to make the movie work. Have writers of 2 or 3 max, including the director to write the script and story. WB doesn't understand that and it's sad.

WB ran out there risk without looking at potential talents.

The New 52 suit has grown on me considerably. I think that's really the way to go.

Give the next Superman or JL movie the red belt and tone down the texture and I think they'll have nailed it.
GeekyCheekyChic - 4/2/2013, 11:37 AM
after seeing him(and his short stature) in GI Joe....yeah sorry he is no Superman- not then, not now NOT EVER. Cahill owns it now unless he royally p[frick]x it up

Someone mentioned Hammer as Bats. Why do people see him as this? Watch "Social Network" & "J.edgar" hes got too much teeth. He's NOT Bruce/Bats.

-just my two cents-
JacksonVegaIII - 4/2/2013, 11:41 AM
If Lockdown proved anything its that Guy Pearce should be Batman
jbak368 - 4/2/2013, 11:44 AM
I watched The Social Network like 15 times, and every time I thought "He'd be a great superhero. Superman, Batman, anyone except, like, The Flash."
RustyShackelford - 4/2/2013, 11:52 AM
I think Ryan Gosling would be an amazing Batman
CavEl - 4/2/2013, 11:52 AM
The guy is 5'9...who thought it was a good idea to have a 5'9 Superman?
valeriesghost - 4/2/2013, 11:52 AM
This guy is wrong for supes in every way. Glad this didn't happen.
CavEl - 4/2/2013, 11:59 AM
RustyShackelford - Baby voice Gosling? Man, I'd like to see him try to strike fear into the hearts of criminals with voice of a 12 year old.

Also, before people start yapping off about how height shouldn't matter, Cotrona was the shortest member of the cast...even the woman cast as Diana was taller!
coolguy - 4/2/2013, 11:59 AM
i always feel superman should be town to earth. he was raised a a human.
Devilbeam - 4/2/2013, 12:02 PM
How tall is Cotrona? Cause he definitely looks Bruce Wayne Batman material. And Superman.
Acecalban1 - 4/2/2013, 12:08 PM
Do any of you morons ever do research before you go into full on whine mode?
The reason the film was going to be filled with a (then) an unknown cast because it was designed to be Motion Capture. The production design was said to be incredible and the plot followed a similar tone to Infinite Crisis. Also George Miller is one of the best action directors working...
THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - 4/2/2013, 12:23 PM
There is only one Superman now.
Knightrider - 4/2/2013, 12:27 PM
They should take the script, costume designs, etc and just make it an animated movie, (I would ise the animation from the DC Universe Online trailer) heck pay the actors to do the voices.

That way we get a rough idea of what could have been.
Mandoman - 4/2/2013, 12:29 PM
Dude was the weakest part of the G.I. Joe.
NBAfanaddict - 4/2/2013, 12:32 PM
Hmm.......not seeing the "dishing" really....more like he gave a few vague answers on how it might-possibly-conceivably look...
Nubase - 4/2/2013, 12:33 PM
the justice league movie will made, just not as quickly as we want it.

Both Zack and Cavill both publicy said that a decision will be made once Man of Steel is out, if it proves to be a success then the DC universe will open up for it to get made in the Man of Steel sequels.
KungFuGee - 4/2/2013, 1:19 PM
So glad that that crap never made it to the screen - it would've been beyond disastrous for WB/Dc. Destroy the whole persona of Superman...? Are you freakin serious?
RGINLA - 4/2/2013, 1:32 PM
No little people as Superman...
SLK - 4/2/2013, 1:48 PM
A bit shorter than Cavill... Both don't fit the part.
batesmotel - 4/2/2013, 1:56 PM
Thank god the movie was never made. I couldnt imagine a green lanter speaking like a fugin uneducated idiot. I'd rather see Reynolds play latern a million times instead of that idiot
Mandoman - 4/2/2013, 1:57 PM
Does anyone have the JL: Mortal Script?
datNAMEtho - 4/2/2013, 2:05 PM
This could've been Supes? Oh hell to the no hookers.

There is one, there is only one that I would call Superman. A man of steel.
typicalfanboy - 4/2/2013, 3:16 PM
Could the rock play every leaguer? If he's box office gold then do it. Him and Channing tatum.
RetroFit - 4/2/2013, 6:37 PM
This movie would have been an absolute abomination with a 5'9" tall Superman and a 6'6" tall Batman. What a joke that was! Thank ZOD it didn't get made!
Zombie137 - 4/2/2013, 9:06 PM
Im so glad this didn't happen because he was ABSOLUTE GARBAGE in GI JOE. He was so stale in his lines and just a terrible terrible actor.
WarnerBrother - 4/2/2013, 9:29 PM

Jeet has said no such thing about WB moving back to a Bale is out,we're going to reboot position.

He was just saying that if Bale and Nolan are still on board, that fact will be revealed in time.Likewise if talks of bringing those guys back fail,so be it.

Jett went on to once again, state his long held opinion that a Justice League film involving Batman and especially involving the TDK trilogy Batman, would be poor fit on the Justice League end and a trashing of TDKR on Batman on film's end.

Jett then suggested that a DC Cinematic universe could move forward on these fronts.

1.Build on the Man of Steel franchise as the corner stone of DC on film.

Jett thinks the film will be a huge hit and WB should just allow Snyder to direct a trilogy and do whatever world building is needed off that franchise.

2.Leave Batman dormant for at least five years and when he comes back, be a totally different version then the Bale/ Nolan one. Have the next Batman get his own film first (with an Arkham tone perhaps)before a Justice League film. In the past Jett has talked about having the same actor be Batman in a rebooted series and Justice League films but those films would not be joined at the hip. Meaning,it would clearly be the same Batman fighting the Riddler in his own film or Darkseid in Justice League but nether world will spill over into the other. No Justice Leaguers would show up in Gotham. No Robin,Nightwing, Batgirl or Gotham Rogues in Justice league.

3.Green light Dark Universe to fil the team film void for WB and serve to build the
DC Cinematic universe by introducing several characters that could have spin off potential like Swamp Thing,Constantine,Zatanna,The Spectre,The Demon and Deadman. (My own take is this would also open up the possibility of a SHAZAM
film down the line by showing the importance the magical world has for the DC Universe.)

4.Use the security of your DC summer tent pole series like the Man of Steel,Dark Universe and rebooted Batman series to produce other DC films based on The Flash,Wonder Woman and Aquaman. If WB is afraid to invest a lot of money in them.Make them cheaper (130 to 150 tops) and release them in the springtime
to reduce risk.

Jett believes that this way, if/when a Justice League film gets made, it will spring from uniting several established film franchises and not from a knee jerk reaction to get in on some of the Avengers cash.

That's what Jett was getting at.

WarnerBrother - 4/2/2013, 9:30 PM
Sorry I ment Jett not Jeet.
KalElKent - 4/2/2013, 11:00 PM
the script was mostly a ripoff of " Superman : sacrafice " where batman is getting closer to unveil maxwell lords secret plans so lord uses his mind control to make superman believe that batman was hurting his love ones so Superman retaliates & beats the shit outta batman nearly killing him & the league is unable to stop him. Lord gives wonder woman a choice to either kill him (maxwell) or he wont stop the mind games & so she breaks Lords neck. Except that in the movie script he never beats the shit outta batman & they added the brother eye crap (-_-)
