The REAL Key To Making The Justice League Movie Work: Side Characters

The REAL Key To Making The Justice League Movie Work: Side Characters

What if we stitched together side-characters from each franchise to create a cohesive, realistic universe? By connecting the side characters in a universe, the heroes are more likely to come together and interact. This method could also justify the position of each member of the cinematic Justice League team.

An important part of making a Justice League film work is creating a world in which these heroes would realistically interact. It's also important to find a way for them to realistically come together. The Avengers was able to do this by having a recruitment character. The Justice League should go a different route to differentiate themselves from the Avengers, but what should that route be?

How about stitching together side-characters from each franchise to create a cohesive, realistic universe? By connecting the side characters in a universe, the heroes are more likely to come together and interact. This method could also justify the position of each member of the team.

For example, we can combine the League of Shadows (Batman), Kryptonian technology (Superman), A.R.G.U.S. (Wonder Woman), the Red Room (Cyborg), and the Guardians of the Universe (Green Lantern) to tell a compelling Justice League story.

Let's say that after Man of Steel, the U.S. government keeps some of the technology left behind from a Kryptonian invasion (Superman). They could give it to the Red Room (Cyborg) to study and to A.R.G.U.S. (Wonder Woman) to protect. That links three characters: Superman, the hero, Wonder Woman, the secret, and Silas Stone, the creator of Cyborg. Now let's say that the terrorist organization known as the League of Shadows (Batman) infiltrates A.R.G.U.S. and the Red Room. They steal the Kryptonian tech and catch the government by surprise. To make this work, the League of Shadows would have to be incredibly upgraded to Bond villains status amd be completely organized, secretive, extensive, and powerful. Their goal would be to destroy cities that they see as corrupt and beyond saving in one fell swoop. The technology they steal could be some kind of mind control tech or space weapon or whatever you think would make the story work. Batman gets drawn in because he was a part of the League of Shadows and he knows how they operate. Superman gets pulled in by the government because it is his tech. Wonder Woman gets pulled in because A.R.G.U.S. was attacked and she's worried about protecting the Earth. Cyborg gets pulled in to save his father, who saved him, but who is now captured by the League of Shadows. The Guardians of the Universe think Earth has dealt with aliens before it has been ready to. And they are concerned by the idea of human power dynamics changing due to extraterrestrial technology, so they dispatch Hal Jordan to investigate. This brings Green Lantern into the fold.

These human bad guys are a challenge for the Justice League because of the technology they possess. While their plot is foiled, they continue to operate in secret, which Batman knows. This keeps the rag-tag team together for future missions. So the LEAGUE of Shadows leads to the formation of the Justice LEAGUE. Cyborg is able to recruit new members like Martian Manhunter, Flash, Aquaman, Shazam, Hawkman, Zatanna, Green Arrow, etc. by using an A.R.G.U.S. database that he calls "The Grid." Part of the League of Shadows branches off and becomes the Secret Society (villains for future Justice League films).

In terms of character development, Superman realizes that he can do more good with a team and that his technology could be more dangerous than he is. The latter leads him to store items in the Fortress of Solitude. Batman expands his purpose beyond Gotham to save the world by fighting the League of Shadows and the Secret Society. He comes to terms with his past in the organization. Wonder Woman makes her debut to the world and finds acceptance. She also starts to connect more with Steve Trevor. Green Lantern realizes that he hasn't been as active as he should be on Earth, which re-orients his world view. And Cyborg forms a closer bond with his father while finding a new purpose in life. A.R.G.U.S. begins to fear metahumans and secret organizations that they know nothing about. This kick starts Project Cadmus, which will drive a wedge between them and the Justice League. Lexcorp secretly finds and studies some of the stolen Kryptonian technology, which attracts Brainiac to Earth. Mid-credits, we find out that a government agent may be the Martian Manhunter in disguise. Post-credits, we find out that the government knows about Atlantis and considers it a threat.

Note: If I could think of an organic way to tie in Flash and/or Aquaman without overburdening the film, then I would. I'm not sure how to incorporate the speed force or other Flash concepts, and I'm not sure how to incorporate Atlantis without giving its own film. But I'd love to see your ideas below!

What's the point in having dc's biggest stars in a movie and they have no one to fight.
Happy11 - 2/22/2013, 8:32 AM
I think they should only use 4 characters at the most for the first one, that's if they aren't making solo films first.

@QueenofAllTime: Great post! Not only does it make sense in a "why didn't we think of this before" sort of way, but it is one of the more original posts on this site.

@yassarian: That wouldn't be hard since Batman is supposed to be rebooted anyway.

@Happy11: I think the League of Shadows with Kryptonian tecnology counts as someone to fight. If you need a "Boss" then R'as al Ghul can work. Or Lady Shiva... There's actually a lot of choices for who could run it...

Nice job!

Martian Manhunter shouldn't just be a new character. He was in the JL long before Cyborg.
QueenOfAllTime - 2/22/2013, 11:32 AM

Really? Then how would you fit him organically and realistically into the story in a MoS world with no lead-in film? And don't make your answer too complicated for modern general audiences.

QUEEN @ Thumbs up an cool read, don't wanna see CYBORG anywhere near the JLA movie though...

To me he's a TITAN (Teen Titans) want to see him in that.

I dunno if you want the Justice League movie too realistic, AVENGERS is far from it :p

Kids have gotta love it too!

Whatever happens, cant wait to see the League movie, Cyborg or no Cyborg, but hopefully no Cyborg, hell, we got sequels for metal man : D

I would absolutely see the movie(s) you described several times.

You have some good ideas, but the Justice League isn't so much about functionality as it is SPIRIT. The Avengers is more of an occupation - Justice League is like the coastal clean-up we have here in Tampa. It's about the drive to be more than average, to make a difference, to stand up for what they believe in.

Martian Manhunter, I always cast as the one who is studying them all while trying desperately to integrate. See, Batman is going to keep files on his colleagues, because he thinks it'd be stupid not to assess any potential danger. J'onn is a bit overconfident - he believes that he can handle it if it were to pop up, but he also has the outsider point-of-view where he can let go when things aren't going his way. The Martian Manhunter's spirit is perfectly illustrated in Darwyn Cooke's New Frontier, where he becomes a detective (like in the movies he's watching) and uses his telepathy to solve crimes. Child's play for him. A greater threat reveals itself, but no one takes it seriously, and J'onn witnesses the fear, paranoia, and blind prejudice from the greatest humanity has to offer. He'd rather not be apart of it.

You have to have J'onn in the Justice League, or else it'll just be chest-pounding.

You DO realize that Superman is an alien, right? Change up MM's origin a bit, replace white martians with someone like Brainiac. There are ample ways for MM to be integrated. People just don't like him anymore, for whatever reason.
superherofan21 - 2/22/2013, 7:43 PM
LEEE777 Knows where it's at. No Cyborg for JLA! He's a Teen Titan!

I never understood why DC substituted him for Martian Manhunter as a founding member...

Awesome idea. People are just to blinded by the fact that they don't have their precious Martian Manhunter. Him being introduced would not help the story at all.

In what continuity did the White Martians exterminate the Green Martians? Did I miss diversion in Young Justice? Is the Imperium from the DCAU a stand-in?

J'onn's brother is the one who done it. His reasons were far more personal and intimate than any the White Martians could ever have.
GetsugaTensho22 - 2/24/2013, 5:24 AM
While i don't particularly agree with your specific ideas, I Do think that the thought process you put into it is awesome.

THINK OF YOUNG JUSTICE, where instead of Superman only fighting lex and kryptonian tech, batman only fighting joker and gothamites etc, it's all mixed together!
I loved how the VILLAINS WORKED TOGETHER. that's how it should be, where there's a legitimate threat in the form of the Light, who pool resources.
scootaloo - 2/24/2013, 7:39 PM
Shite. Got that confused.
Tainted87 - 2/25/2013, 8:42 AM
Its all good, just dont let it happen again.
sifu21 - 3/15/2013, 12:13 PM
I think flashpoint should be considered for the JLM, but slightly different. Flash should be the main cause for all the characters to interact. Consider a distorcion of the universes created by the speed force. This should trigger the creation of an organization of super thieves with a master plan for universe dominance (sort of), where the JL should struggle to protect the same purpose, but unconfident of the other members . I thing that the take must be something like fringe meets star treck.
