CBM reader and Luke Cage fan Kellen Sherrod thinks he's got what it takes to play "hero for hire" Luke Cage. He's definitely got the guns for the part. Let us know what you think.

I'd have to hear him say "Sweet Christmas!" first!!! :)
alten2345 - 1/19/2009, 10:15 PM
have him do a voice in for it so we can hear him. other than that tho he has my vote...

if not him then i wanna see Kevin Grevioux from Underworld take the role. Hes got sucha deep voice it would probably be really cool to hear him say Sweet Christmas.
LaffaTaffa - 1/19/2009, 10:37 PM
Doesn't matter what he looks like as much as if he can act or not.
andyoung2002 - 1/19/2009, 10:49 PM
oh and who owns the rights to cage?
andyoung2002 - 1/19/2009, 10:49 PM
cage is lame. still wanna play him?
grif - 1/19/2009, 11:04 PM
I agree hes lame
TheColonel - 1/19/2009, 11:10 PM

hes a badass motha phucker
especially now in the comics, he is front and center

realfirstavenger - 1/19/2009, 11:36 PM
I'd say he definitely has the look. I'm with alten though, I wanna hear him say 'Sweet Christmas"!
TheMyth - 1/20/2009, 1:17 AM
Dam! is he sapose to be the next black punisher? is luke cage even that big??
Logan-X - 1/20/2009, 1:18 AM
Hmm, he kinda looks like cage, , but real talk,he should of uploaded a youtube video and say, sweet christmas, and a few lines.
zinext - 1/20/2009, 1:25 AM
make sure you say sweet christmas and not merry christmas you filthy animal.
grif - 1/20/2009, 1:41 AM
Why does he look like Cage, cause he's black and muscle-bound? Is that the only criteria for an actor to play a part? In that case, let's get Hulk Hogan to play Superman, since he's white and muscle-bound.

What are his acting credentials? How is his voice work? His body language? How do you know he's not 5 feet tall?

And what's with this "sweet christmas" crap? That's all he has to say for some of you for him to get the part? No WONDER so many of you are so disappointed with casting decisions. Were some of you to have a final say as to whom plays who, superhero movies would be ridiculous. This is from AcidLogic.com and is pretty accurate:

"Luke Cage - Power Man:
Created in the early 70s, Luke Cage was Marvel's most obvious attempt in cashing in on the Blaxploitation fad. A super strong ex-con with steel hard skin, Cage spent most of the early issues of his comic "Luke Cage, Hero for Hire" battling an assortment of African-American villains on the streets of New York. Much of his dialogue in the early issues was "jive talk" as approximated by white writers, including the frequent exclamation, "Sweet Christmas!"

Eventually, Cage was teamed up with the white kung fu superhero Iron-Fist, and the series was renamed "Power Man and Iron Fist." Was the idea that Iron Fist would make the series more palatable to white readers? Probably, though, as a hyper skilled martial artist, Iron Fist was also a reinterpretation of the Bruce Lee/Sonny Chiba genre of grindhouse kung fu flicks that was popular with black viewers, so the pairing ideally would draw both white and black readers. And it worked for a while – the series had a successful run into the mid-80s and both characters are still popular today."

You can add Black Panther, Black Lightning, Black Manta, The Prowler (a black guy that's just a burglar, gotta love that), Black Vulcan, Black Spider (who's also a drug addict), Black Racer, Black Goliath, The Black Hand, The Black Talon, The Coal Tiger (hilarious), Man-Ape (no BS there), and the list goes on and on.

When they can give me a black super hero that isn't based on pandering to racial segment of the population (which ought to insult the crap out of them) or a stereotype, and just be a great hero that happens to be African American, I'll bite. In the mean time...

All this (and the fact that super strength/tough skin is cliche in comics) is why Luke Cage is lame, as noted above.
gtrman - 1/20/2009, 1:53 AM
wow gtrman, arnt u somthin!! dude does kinds look like cage tho, and yea, cage was based on a stero type, but he's not really all that bad of a sterotype, im black so i would kno,he is a major player in the marvel universe, so u cant take that away from the character, sides, if u say cage is lame dats ur opinion, most of us cage fans aint gonna change our mind over wat say!!
zinext - 1/20/2009, 2:11 AM
I haven't seen him act,
TheSoulEater - 1/20/2009, 4:15 AM
I'd still like to see Tyrese and John Singleton do this film. Singleton has shown with Shaft and Four Brothers that he can give a movie a 70's vibe and a modern feel at the same time. Seems right for Luke Cage. Tyrese is a decent actor who has action movie experience under his belt.

As far as the Blaxploitation angle is concerned, it's not about what Cage was, it's all about what he can be. In recent years he's shown that he can be a leader. If his character development focused on this it could act as a set up for a Heroes For Hire movie. And that would be a hell of a thing.
Reck79 - 1/20/2009, 5:14 AM
He might even can play Barracuda in the Punisher: War Zone sequel. He looks him.
costa - 1/20/2009, 6:57 AM
Reck79 please do not tell me you just said Tyrese.....
bigdez - 1/20/2009, 7:04 AM
Like I said, Tyrese is a decent actor. I didn't say he was great. And if Singleton's going to direct, Tyrese would be his choice. An unknown would make it interesting, but I doubt that a major studio would go for that with a character who's not exactly high profile.

And on a side note, a Punisher: War Zone sequel is highly unlikely considering how poorly the movie performed at the box office.
Reck79 - 1/20/2009, 7:13 AM
if it worked out ,they could use some other actors voice(if he had a weak sound).he looks very similar to what cage is drawn to look like.Kevin Grevioux would be my first choice though, and if not him then Tony Todd.but if they cast Mr.Kellen Sherrod it wouldnt upset me,if he is a fan,he mite be able to add some intangibles that other actors can't.
don1 - 1/20/2009, 7:41 AM
Like I said with the Fabiola thread - "Now you know what it's like to want..."

Uh, I want to play Captain Marvel - doesn't mean I'm gonna.
loganoneil - 1/20/2009, 8:51 AM
this ain't the "Cage" I wanna hear about, what about Johnny Cage, and the Mortal Kombat franchise? When are they going to make the next of those movies?
davidzuck - 1/20/2009, 8:54 AM
Well in terms of a black superhero that isnt a racial stereotype how about the new Nick Fury?

Oh and as far as the pic above. He looks good enough for the role. I say send him to acting school and then send him to hollywood. I deffinitly dont want any of these new age rap/R&B black artists to do it. I feel they are just wanting to cash in on something big so they can get their acting careers started. I dont think they will have a passion for the role at all, like a fan will have that is.
Sortis - 1/20/2009, 11:52 AM
RECK79-

I'm with you bro, Singleton and Tyrese getting together for a Luke Cage movie sounds like a great idea. Tyrese isn't bad at all. I thought he was good in Baby Boy, Waist Deep, Four Brothers, and i'll admit he had me laughing Fast & Furious 2 ("Taco meat all hangin out...").LMAO.

They could easily manipulate his voice (like they did in Batman with Christian Bale only hopefully not as poorly) to make it sound deeper so he can really hit those "Sweet Christmas's"!!

Oh yea, IMDB has Tyrese listed as the next Luke Cage with Singleton directing and Kevin Navayne as Willis Stryker!!

EDIT: Hmmm....just did some research on Kevin Navayne and i must admit, i'm a little concerned with two models as the leads in this movie.
Talontd - 1/20/2009, 11:56 AM
I been saying this since I heard this movie was gonna be made. It should be a "Heroes for Hire" movie, not just Luke Cage. While I like Cage in the comics alot more that Iron Fist, as unkown as Cage is to non-comic readers, adding his buddy Danny Rand would beef up the action and story without taking away from anything.
TheMyth - 1/20/2009, 12:04 PM
Tyrese is too small in my opinion, i dont care how much he bulks up for the roll just too short. Personally i believe they should get Henry Simmons from NYPD Blue to play cage. A little to clean cut and friendly looking but im sure he can scowl.
andyoung2002 - 1/20/2009, 12:06 PM
YEA TYRESE IS LIKE 5'6 OR 5'8 BUT I REATHER SEE HIM THAN THAT GUY UP THERE SURE HE CANT ACT AND HE DOENT LOOK THE PART.IMO THE PERFACT GUY 2 PLAY LUKE CAGE HANDS DOWN IS THAT GUY FROM THE FIRST UNDERWORLD MOVIE RAZE HIS REAL NAME IS KEVIN NOT SURE ABOUT THE LAST NAME THOUGH..
theLegend - 1/20/2009, 12:12 PM
Yes well TheLegend, that would be Kevin Grevioux the guys upstairs have been talking about. Personnaly, dialog wise, if he's a supporting actor in Heroes for hire, Grevioux would be great but as a main role, Michael Jay White would have the talent to handle it.
Shaman - 1/20/2009, 12:31 PM
Lol, sure ya not wanting to be in PUNISHER 3 kellen hehehehhe!!! Cool! : )
LEEE777 - 1/20/2009, 1:53 PM
I like the idea of Jai White alot more that Tyrese, but White tends to overplay his intensity sometimes, and Cage does have a sense of humor(not like Deadpool or Spidey, but he isn't some hardass, no nonsense guy)and I don't think Tyrese or White could pull that off. Honestly this guy pictured above looks like he was peeled from the pages of the New Avengers. If the man can act, which none of us know whether or not he can, I would so throw him my vote. And someone above asked if Cage was that big in the comics, yes he is. Kellon here really does have the look, good job.
TheMyth - 1/20/2009, 2:03 PM
True, White gets hot headed. So if Kellon has the talent, why not. It's not like i'd go see it anyway. I didn't even go see War Zone. I keep my money for concepts that are sure to sell. And if "Heroes for Hire" don't get their tv show first, they are so gonna pull a war zone at the box office.

Check you e-mails myth. I'd like to put up the article soon.
Shaman - 1/20/2009, 2:11 PM
The Cage character isn't a sucky character. I gotta protest that one. It's all about the writers. Cage has had his good and his bad days. That MAX Azzerelo/Corbin book was great! Get Azzerelo to write the script and you're solid.

Singleton will be a good start, as long as he understands that this character shouldn't be Shaft. The two characters can be handled as differently as superman and batman these days. There may have been a time where Cage was just another blacksploitation shot, but it isn't now. If you take out the cheese factor and make this about a man who operates in the real streets, and not some BS caricature of them, this film could be great.

Good luck Kellen, if you've got the chops to take on the part, you've got all the fan love you can get. Same goes to tyrese, as long as he can make his arms look like columns.
Coats - 1/20/2009, 2:21 PM
GTRMAN.. Well said !
Sonny - 1/20/2009, 4:07 PM
Do it, Kellen.
StarksNStripes - 1/20/2009, 5:33 PM
Is it just me, or does his head look to small for his huge, muscley, could squash me like a pregnant roach, body?
Gideon - 1/20/2009, 5:57 PM
Meh...
Jetsaholic - 1/20/2009, 8:25 PM
Jayme Fox as Luke Cage
jordan heath - 1/21/2009, 1:09 AM
Well jordan, why not go with LL Cool Jay while you're at it. Or better yet, find a wrestler. That "Zeus" guy with the lazy eye in TDK would be good... NOT.
Shaman - 1/21/2009, 6:34 AM
Here a idea STOP GIVEN HOLLYWOOD IDEA ON MAKING CRAPPY MOVIE
Supermike - 1/21/2009, 11:21 AM
gtrman FTW! I usually hate long, preachy comments but that was utterly brilliant and the best part is its TRUE. As a 1/2 black & white person myself, i give Kudos to you. Well played, Sir.
ANooBiS - 1/21/2009, 12:34 PM
after seeing his picture i would go with tyrese gibson, im a black guy and im not gay! but tyrese has a better looking face and is just as muscular. but even if this movie is made, it wont get the incredible budget as the major comic headliners and im cool with that, basicaly a "hey lets take a chance" and would probaly make a good profit.
loganaspatch - 1/21/2009, 5:48 PM
gtrman: How about Bishop. Where's the blaxploitation there. lol you are right though.
TheMyth - 1/22/2009, 2:11 AM
Bishop kicks ass, dog!!! He ain't no push over and aside from Spawn, he's the best black superhero/antihero in my book! And don't give me that shit about Spawn being disfigured and waring a mask! It's the essence that matters, not the color of the actual skin! We don't bitch about Deadpool so why should Black people bitch about Spawn? Any excuse is good to go off a rant these days. Racism still exists because people still cling to it like a security blanket and that goes for BOTH sides of the fence!
Shaman - 1/22/2009, 7:28 AM
Ithink he looks the part just have to see his acting and then see who has cage, how he can be used in a movie(Avengers? sequel?), not to mention an actual plot.
AmberButane - 1/22/2009, 9:10 PM
Remember guys. This may not even happen.
AmberButane - 1/22/2009, 9:13 PM
