The Avengers Review/Thoughts (SPOILERS!!!)
My review,thoughts on the Avengers
(One little spoiler)

Hello everyone, I've been reading all your reviews for The Avengers (which are great btw) and instead of flooding the comment section, I thought I would just write my own. Enjoy
*For the record, the only other work of Joss's that I have read/seen is his work on X-Men*
Let's just cut to the chase, there isn't a other cbm like this. Sure it's not as "in depth" as Watchmen or "adapted to realism" like The Dark Knight, but it's for those reasons it works.
I've read people say the story is simple. I agree and disagree. While the alien invasion angle seems overplayed, the little nods and character moments make it feel bigger.
Some say the Chitauri were lacking in backstory or not enough of a threat for The Avengers. To me, not giving them a backstory was a great move. You're left with no expections as to what they're capable of. This adds 2 things to the movie, 1.Suspense. You know they're coming, but you don't know what they're gonna do when they get here asides from attack and 2. It leaves the option to make them skrulls in future movies because no one ever said "oh they can't shapeshift"
To me, the bigger picture story isn't what you're suppose to be watching, it's the smaller moments like Black Widow's quest to save Hawkeye or Iron Man learning what it means to put yourself on the line. These "mini stories" make the overall movie feel bigger and more filled out then simple "Aliens are attacking, let's go"
The performances are what you would expect, RDJ is still perfect as Tony, Chris Hemsworth is Thor, full stop. And Chris Evans plays a great steve rogers and a more experienced Captain America. However 3 performances stood out.
First is Tom Hiddleston as Loki. Alot of people say his performance rivals or even tops Heath's "Joker". I'm gonna have to say I agree, even though I'm a huge fan of Heath Ledger's work (Not just the dark knight). It's because Tom does such a shift from what he did in Thor. In thor, you kinda were made to feel sorry for him and he expressed his sadness in that film great. Here however, he comes back with a "Well screw you all, I'm not playing anymore" and does, as Joss wanted, plays a more evil, feral Loki and instead of feeling sorry for him, you feel joy when he finally gets his ass handed to him
Second is Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow. I didn't have a problem with her in Iron Man 2 however after watching her here, I can see how it lacks. There is a real "She is not to be messed with" vibe with Scarlett this time around and she really does come across as formible.
Finally, the one I was not looking forward to was Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner. He's easily the best Banner (I never saw Bixby play it). Just the way he speaks with almost a dry humor about his "condition" and "the other guy", you really get a sense that he is a man who has been dealing with this for a long time and he's tired. As much as I loved his performance as Bruce and could easily sit through a new Hulk film, I don't want Marvel to make one. It shows in this movie that Bruce/Hulk works better in a team film instead of just on his own.
One more mention to what I felt was the heart of the movie, Coulson. Say what you will about his death being predictable or feeling "forced" but this section got to me, in a big way. I had read the spoilers, I knew it was coming and I still teared up during this scene. The real heart pulling moment was when Fury threw Coulson's Captain America "blood stained" trading cards across a table to Cap. If you watch really close, Evans does this little head tilt and then has this expression of "I let that man down, this is on me". Right there, I believed Loki was in a world of hurt, I believed the avengers were gonna save the day, I believed they were real people, not characters or actors.
This is why I think it's unfair to compare this movie to The Dark Knight. Yes Nolan's Batman looks real world enough, but it lacks the heart to really make me believe in Bruce Wayne's drive (Not bagging the movies, love them as well)
It seems all the characters lead themselves to each other in a flawless way. Cap and Thor become allies on the battlefield, Hulk and Tony build a almost "Hulk look after Tin Man" friendship and there's more of Black Widow/Hawkeye to explore.
I don't wanna waste much more of your time going on about action or special effects, it's all the best it could be.
In short, for me this is the perfect comic movie.Sure, there are a few nitpicks and such but every movie has them.I came out from seeing it and the first thing I said to my girlfriend was "This is how it must have felt when people first saw Superman". This movie made me believe me a man could fly, turn into a big green rage monster, shoot lightning and more.
Do your inner child a favor and go see this movie.
