Superman Returns director Bryan Singer told Comic-Con attendees that he's in talks with Warner Bros. about a sequel but he hadn't concluded a deal to do it yet, which he said is always "iffy."
Singer intends to do a sequel in 2009 which goes beyond a re-introduction of the Man of Steel and will let him "get all 'Wrath of Khan on it.' An alien villain would be the antagonist, he said, according to Superhero Hype.
Singer added: "I'd like to build on the seeds that are planted, you know, expand upon relationships, you've got now a child, you've got these other elements, but also have the opportunity to have the characters more established to bring in some more action and have some more stuff going on," he told Superhero Hype.
As for the reveal in the comic adaptation that New Krypton (the island Luthor created) may have settled into orbit around the Earth: "Yeah, New Krypton has got these crystals on it, so anything's possible," Singer said. Would the sequel be all 3-D? "I'd like to do more, I don't know how that whole experience would work out, depends how long the film is, it will probably be shorter," he said.
On the Superman Returns DVD: "There's the in-movie experience where during the movie you'll be able to pop-off to the set and see things live as they were shot. There's things like that. Plus we had a continuous presence of video on the set to the point... there's a lot of funny, interesting, kind of theater that you don't get to ordinarily see in the documentary material and then there will be deleted scenes," he told the fan site.
When asked about whether he'd return to the X-Men franchise, Singer joked that he'd have to see who was left in the cast after the events of X3: The Last Stand.
