Last week, Captain America: The Winter Soldier exceeded expectations by beating Rio 2 to the top spot, and the two movies look set to battle it out again this weekend due to the fact that Wally Pfister's Transcendence is the latest flop for The Lone Ranger's Johnny Depp. Check it out!

Based on the trailers and cast, Transcendence looked set to be a hit. However, a wave of negative reviews for Wally Pfister's (the DP of The Dark Knight Trilogy) directorial debut have resulted in a disappointing $850,000 debut at midnight showings. Now, the movie looks set to be yet ANOTHER flop for former box office draw Johnny Depp as The Hollywood Reporter reveals that the $100 million movie may not even be able to reach $20 million during this Easter weekend. There is a chance however that it could perform better overseas. Either way, that leaves the #1 spot in North America up for grabs with Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Rio 2 each set to battle it out as they did previously. The latter is again tipped for the top spot with $24 million, but analysts predicted last week that the Marvel sequel would come in at second place and were quickly proven wrong, so Captain America could be at #1 for a third straight weekend!

Johnny Depp always had zero appeal to me
sKeemAn - 4/18/2014, 4:43 PM
CA: TWS will own Rio 2. Too bad about Transcendence, it looks like an interesting movie.
AlexanderLykins - 4/18/2014, 4:43 PM
Awesome. All of this news is awesome.
JordanKing - 4/18/2014, 4:45 PM
Come on Cap!
MrCBM56 - 4/18/2014, 4:45 PM
I was really excited for Transcendence, but the more I saw of it the more I thought it looked like generic shit designed to look smart.
ezio619 - 4/18/2014, 4:48 PM
i was really dissapointed by the reaction to transcendence..i was looking forward to seeing that film this weekend..oh well.. maybe i'll catch at home or something,i hope cap 2 gets the top spot third week straight, but i have abad feeling that rio 2 might get it
Abary - 4/18/2014, 4:48 PM
Yikes, Depp keeps flopping. On another note, I doubt those stupid birds will beat Cap 2. It's peak was last week. Not many more people want to see that shit movie.
TheDarkPassenger - 4/18/2014, 4:48 PM
Was hoping Transcendence was going to be better than this. Damn shame.
MARVELPSYCHO79 - 4/18/2014, 4:50 PM
Captain America:The Winter Soldier will be number 1 again this weekend.
soforizo - 4/18/2014, 4:50 PM
I'm still looking forward to Transcendence at some point. Scifi films of these types don't always attract huge numbers, but I love them anyways.
MARVELPSYCHO79 - 4/18/2014, 4:51 PM
The critics are destroying Transendence on RT.
soforizo - 4/18/2014, 4:51 PM
You guys still want Depp for Doc Strange???
DaVinci31 - 4/18/2014, 4:51 PM

You have a gold mine sitting right beneath all of you're asses!

KarolosPrime - 4/18/2014, 4:52 PM
Come on Cap destroy Rio
antman8o8 - 4/18/2014, 4:52 PM
lol and this movie is from the guy that tried to blast the Avengers over TDKR. don't get me wrong Pfister is a great DP but TDKR and Avengers were two different types of movies. sucks this will most likely flop for him.

really hoping Cap TRANSCENDS the box office for a 2nd week in a row! only bird we wanna see is FALCON haha
McNyagano - 4/18/2014, 4:52 PM

batcheeks8 - 4/18/2014, 4:53 PM
I love birds.. go Rio! haha
THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - 4/18/2014, 4:53 PM
Knew Transcendence was gonna suck
Omarvls - 4/18/2014, 4:54 PM
So if TWS was at 303 Million on Monday Morning April 7th
and on Monday Morning April 14th was at 476 Million (total of 173 million more)
it would reason that it COULD be at 600 Million by Monday Morning April 21st since it would need only 124 Million a drop off of 50 million from the previous week and with it opening in Japan It could happen I still say 580 Million by Monday morning

Both Thor DW and MOS were in theaters for 16 weeks domestically this will be TWS ONLY 3rd week in realese

A TOTAL BLOCKBUSTER for The Best CBM of All Time
MARVELPSYCHO79 - 4/18/2014, 4:54 PM
@yoss First time director and writer was not a good idea to make Transendence a good movie.
maninfinesuit - 4/18/2014, 4:54 PM
Based on the trailers and the cast (specifically Depp), Transcendence looked set to be a cheesy piece of shit. Cheesier than this cheesecake.

soforizo-i never wanted depp for dr strange and i dont think marvel will go after the big star, RDJ wasnt a big star when he was cast in iron man, neither was chris evans, hemsworth, besides his small but great role in star trek, was unknown before thor, he havent gone after the biggest star always, they go after people who fit the role in their mind
DaVinci31 - 4/18/2014, 4:57 PM
Speaking of generic shit designed to look smart. . .

Omarvls - 4/18/2014, 4:57 PM

Wonder Woman and The Flash can easily be Blockbuster type films

The best news that we can hear at Comicon 2014 is
that WB has giving DC Comics their own film Studio

DC Studios
Scarilian - 4/18/2014, 4:58 PM
Only film that really has a chance against Captain America 2 is The Amazing Spider-man 2... yet given its only released in a few places at the moment I think Cap might pull off another week at top of the box office.

This film should easily reach a $600,000,000 total by Monday.
ChrispyG - 4/18/2014, 4:58 PM
Captain America being #1 for 3 straight weekends would be SWEET
Titanace - 4/18/2014, 4:59 PM
Cap 2 vs dirty bird.....epic
maninfinesuit - 4/18/2014, 5:01 PM
@DaVinci31 Lucy is a Luc Besson film. I'm pretty sure he knows that what he puts out isn't much more than awesome pulp.

Omarvls - 4/18/2014, 5:02 PM
Depp as Dr.Strange has passed the WOW factor I think Marvel would hit it out of the park with Luke Evans
danield222 - 4/18/2014, 5:05 PM
I don't want Johnny Depp to be Doctor Strange, I never did and I never will, I don't like him at all, he should stay away from MCU.
MarvelFan15 - 4/18/2014, 5:05 PM
Captain America 2 will win the weekend with $30.3 million dollars.
dinkinflicka - 4/18/2014, 5:05 PM
Again I don't understand why WB hasn't already moved off the date May 6th and claimed an early April date considering how well Cap 2 is doing and the fact an early April date works. If those two movies come out the same date it will be the dumbest by two studios ever. It's stupid to be released within a week of each other.
TheAmericanPatriot - 4/18/2014, 5:05 PM
Shit! I'm gonna do my part again and go see Cap 2 again! Screw Rio 2, went to see that movie with my little brother and it bore the hell out of me.
SauronsBANE - 4/18/2014, 5:06 PM
"lol and this movie is from the guy that tried to blast the Avengers over TDKR. don't get me wrong Pfister is a great DP but TDKR and Avengers were two different types of movies."

Some of you guys are really funny. Phister criticized the cinematography of The Avengers, not the story itself. Nor was he saying TDKR was better. Not even close. He pointed out how weird some of the camera angles were in The AVengers, considering the story it was trying to tell. Are his comments about that movie wanting to show off its sets really so off the mark? I don't think so.

And besides, God forbid someone criticize a popular movie, right? Even better: an accomplished DP, who has more experience on movies than each and every user here at CBM combined (including me), dared to criticize a technical aspect of a blockbuster movie, which he's pretty well-versed in, seeing how that's his area of expertise.

Not to mention the fact that Whedon actually changed DP's for Avengers 2, so maybe Phister was making a good point.
SauronsBANE - 4/18/2014, 5:07 PM
All that said, it doesn't change the fact that Transcendence most likely sucks. Just saying, his comments on The Avengers has NOTHING to do with this, and it's pointless to keep bringing that up because some fanboys hold pretend grudges against famous people.
PeterDarker121 - 4/18/2014, 5:07 PM
Damn, just took the words outta my mouth. Yeah....I LOVE Johhny Depp (in the right roles) and have always had MAD respect for him as an actor, but I hope this ends the hopes of those who've wanted him as The Master Of The Mystic Arts. It ain't gonna happen if it was ever gonna happen in the first place.

If Cap2 wins the box office again, my mind will officially be blown...and with the SHIELD ratings uptick last Tuesday showing that word is still spreading about the flick, it's certainly possible.

I can also see Marvel Studios pulling an 'Avengers' and re-releasing 'Cap The Winter Soldier' for the July 4th weekend only. It would be a great way of pulling in a few more viewers over a family holiday weekend as well as putting the Marvel brand back in the public's mind a few short weeks before Guardians of the Galaxy.
Dandy - 4/18/2014, 5:07 PM

Actually the main appeal of Animated films are their long legs. There is a reason why animated films stick around FOREVER in theaters.
