Can't Believe I'm Seeing This! Greatest Moments in Comic Book Movies
With the recent casting news for the sequels to Man of Steel & The Avengers setting the internet ablaze. It dawned on me how epic this era of CBMs has become. In the year 2015 we’ll be seeing not only a sequel the blockbuster The Avengers which put six big screen super-heroes together in The Age of Ultron. But we’ll also see something that most fans thought we’d ever see a World’s Finest movie, with Batman & Superman sharing the screen. So those two movies got me thinking, remembering the time well before Avengers when we questioned whether we’d even see a Spider-Man movie let alone approaching a sequel to a rebooted trilogy. These were my top 10 moments in CBM history that made me go I CAN’T BELIEVE I’M SEEING THIS!
With CBMs now common place, there was a time when you never thought you'd see some of your favorite comic book characters on the big screen. This is my top 10 CBM moments that made me go I can't believe we're seeing this.
Now when compiling this list I’m not saying these were the best moments in the film, though some of them do qualify. These were just the moments where I was simply overcome with pure joy that I actually was witnessing this on the big screen. The movies I chose from where mainly super-hero fair, while films like Road to Perdition & A History of Violence were based on graphic novels. It wasn’t hard to realize those films seeing how they’re set in the very real world. These are movies that fans wouldn’t think we’d ever see in our wildest dreams. These are just my opinion please feel free to chime in with your own moments below. Hope you enjoy the list, and without further adieu.
10. Superman Saves Lois Lane – Superman
Now while I’ll admit I’m not the biggest fan of the original Superman movie I wasn’t born when it came out and didn’t see it until I was already in awe of Tim Burton’s Batman. Superman the movie just didn’t do it for me. With that’d being said I’d be a liar if I didn’t put this on the list, I mean from John Williams awesome score. To the pimp’s “Man that’s a bad suit” but the kicker was the awesome banter between Superman & Lois Lane “You’ve got me? Who’s Got you?” This was a moment that you truly did believe a man could fly, and I’d imagine for the time it came out plenty a comic book fan had to be like I can’t believe we’re seeing this!
9. Nightcrawler attacks the President – X2 X-men United
So many great moments in Bryan Singer’s follow-up to X-Men. And while I was very tempted to put a moment from X-Men here X2 just surpassed its’ predecessor in so many ways I opted to skip it. Singer kicks X2 off with this amazingly choreographed sequence displaying how awesome Nightcrawler can be. I was never a huge fan of the character until I saw how magnificently his powers could be utilized and on the big screen no less! From the classical music to the sound of his Bamf! Which every X-Men fan could picture in their head the sound, but never thought we’d actually see it outside of cartoon form. This scene jumpstarted a story that took the X-Men from the pages of the comic books and into the stratosphere of our conciseness.
8. Blade entrance in Blood batch – Blade
Wesley Snipes is Blade! It’s amazing that before this movie Marvel Comics track record on the big screen was, let’s just say severely lacking. I mean we’re talking about a group that couldn’t even get a successful Punisher film on the big screen. Yet it was this relatively unknown character from that Blackplotation era in the 70s that jump started Marvel’s movie success. Before X-Men & Spider-Man there was Blade. And nothing exemplified how truly badass Wesley Snipes was as the character than this scene that jumpstarted Blade.
7. I’m Batman – Batman
It’s so incredibly funny to me the insane backlash that ole Ben Affleck is getting from being cast as Batman. But I’d imagine it was on par as to fans reactions of Michael Keaton being named as the actor to bring The Dark Knight to life in Burton’s version. If there was ever any doubt that he could pull it off it was done away with his first scene as the character! This snippet is short but the level of pure coolness is beyond measure. Christian Bale could’ve taken notes from Keaton’s steely delivery of the now famous line “I’m Batman”. Damn right you are and I couldn’t believe my eyes that I was actually seeing the character on screen.
6. Spidey vs. The Green Goblin First fight – Spider-Man
I’ll admit Spider-Man is by far my favorite comic book character ever! So when this movie came out in 2002 I was already chomping at the bit to see it. Best I had gotten of seeing Spider-Man to this point was the Saturday Morning cartoon from the 90s. I remember watching re-runs of the awful live action TV show. But never did I think I would get see this character on the big screen. While I feel like the Razor Bat fight, and the bridge fight were excellent moments in this movie. I couldn’t help but feel utterly awestruck from the first encounter of our titular protagonist & his arch-enemy. They choreography was out of this world, but it was just watching Spider-Man move and thwart the Goblin’s plan, and hearing Willem Dafoe in Saturday morning glee “I’ll Get you Spider-Man!” that propelled this scene into greatness. I remember watching this with my brothers and as if on cue we turned to each other exclaiming how unbelievable it was to be witnessing Spider-Man actually on the big screen.
5. Magneto escapes – X2 X-Men United
I could arguably create a top 10 list alone from the many scenes in X2 that’s how magnificent this movie was. Yet combing through it I feel like the Nightcrawler scene, and this scene outshined the competition. Magneto has always been a powerhouse and while it was cool to see him hijack police officer’s guns the first X-Men. It was this scene in X2 that cemented him as a true beast! During the Fatal Attractions arc in the comics fans will remember when Magneto pulled the adamantium from Wolverine’s bones (see below).
It was an extremely brutal display of Magneto’s immense power, one I’m sure we thought would couldn’t even imagine being done on the big screen. Lo and behold Bryan Singer gave us this phenomenal escape by Magneto.
4. The Avenger’s Initiative – Iron Man
Can anyone truly deny how breathtakingly amazing Marvel’s Cinematic Universe has been? It all started with this post credits tease from Iron Man. In its own right in was beyond belief that Marvel Studios had taken this B-list character in Iron Man, with this extremely high risk actor in Robert Downey Jr. And together gave us not just a great CBM, but a flat out great movie. Then to add the cherry on top there was this tease, this promise of even bolder things to come. This scene was short but sweet and left you craving more, just like a good appetizer is supposed to do before the main course.
3. Spidey vs. Doctor Octopus – Spider-Man 2
Again you know how I feel about Spidey, so of course this beyond glorious scene from his best movie would hit this list. While I so wanted to make this my #2 moment, I had to be honest with # 2’s entry. Now this fight this how sequence was fanfreakingtastic! Spider-Man 2 as a whole I absolutely loved, and why it made the 2nd half of Spider-Man 3 so hard to endure. Raimi hit all the right notes in this action packed scene. With a glorious re-emergence of Spider-Man to save his girl fighting on top of a clock tower, to duking it out a top a speeding train. We get see Spidey put his powers on display, as well as see how ruthless Doctor Octopus can be. Love, love, love, loooooooove this freaking scene!
2. Joker’s Bank Robbery – The Dark Knight
The Dark Knight is a masterpiece plain and simple. With this scene that Christopher Nolan uses to start the film he took CBM from simple popcorn flicks to a true work of art. While I could say some other CBMs suffer from trying to emulate Nolan’s real world approach. There’s absolutely no denying how amazing this introduction is to this generation’s Joker. From his complete silence in the midst of pulling of this daring heist to his quiet explanation of his plan, to that extreme close-up and spooky reveal of his face. Ledger’s Joker was established as one not to be effed with. All during a bank robbery that could be put right next to Heat in terms of great robberies put to celluloid. The Dark Knight broke all the rules, and it started with this truly epic moment.
1. Battle of New York – The Avengers
Now I wanted to include this entire last sequence but I figured the clip of above captured the full essence of that last battle. For years Marvel had been building to this, this moment where you’d see not just one amazing super-hero on the big screen fighting an earth shattering threat, but 6! Piece by piece the puzzle was being put together, and after Joss Whedon excellently set the table. We were treated to a full on visual feast! Captain America directed the team, Hulk Smashing, Thor calling down lightening, and Iron Man blasting through the city streets! This sequence kicked down all barriers to what could be shown on the big screen. The Avengers wasn’t steeped in reality it took the best elements of what made us fall in love in comics in the first place put them on full display. What we’d imagine in our heads, whilst playing with action figures or flying through video games was all put on screen. In The Avengers we were given the who’d win in a fight arguments from fan boy aplenty treatment, to a villain in Loki that embodied the God of mischief. It made you laugh shout with exhilaration and flat out leap for joy at its conclusion. From something we’d thought we’d never see to this new surreal era of film. The MCU was here and it was beautiful. Now that Phase One is complete the table is being set once again for Phase Two and I for one can’t wait see what’s next.
While there are so many amazing moments we’ve gotten in CBM I still think the best is yet to come. So I’ve including a couple of possible epic moments from movies we’ve yet to see, and some moments that I was tempted to add to the list but just didn’t quite make it.
Superman saves plane – Superman Returns
I’ll keep this short and sweet remember when you saw this moment. Didn’t you just think damn this going to be the greatest Super-hero movie ever! Then you we’re proven extremely wrong , but still I won’t deny how great this scene was.
Puny God – The Avengers
Without a doubt the greatest Hulk moment ever!! So tempted to put his in the top 10 but left it as apart of the Battle of NY alone. But I could watch this over and over again.
Avengers vs. Ultron – The Avengers Age of Ultron
Of course this movie has even yet to begin filming, but I can already picture the Avengers battling Ultron. And one can only hope it’s even close to as awesome as the pic above.
Rocket Raccoon – Guardians of the Galaxy
We now know who’s the voice, and while I was hoping for someone like Nick Offerman from Parks & Rec or Jason Statham. I’m cool with Bradley Cooper as the choice. I just already can’t believe we’re even going to be seeing this!
Batman meets Superman – Batman/Superman
Seriously one can only hope Batman & Superman’s first meeting is as awesome as this in MoS 2. Why DC hasn’t turned their DCU over to Paul Dini & Bruce Timm? It’s beyond me.
Well that’s the list I hope you enjoyed going through it as much as I enjoyed putting it together. Again feel free to sound off below, and let everyone know what’s your top 10 Can’t Believe I’m Seeing This Moments.
