Can't Believe I'm Seeing This! Greatest Moments in Comic Book Movies

Can't Believe I'm Seeing This! Greatest Moments in Comic Book Movies

With CBMs now common place, there was a time when you never thought you'd see some of your favorite comic book characters on the big screen. This is my top 10 CBM moments that made me go I can't believe we're seeing this.

With the recent casting news for the sequels to Man of Steel & The Avengers setting the internet ablaze. It dawned on me how epic this era of CBMs has become. In the year 2015 we’ll be seeing not only a sequel the blockbuster The Avengers which put six big screen super-heroes together in The Age of Ultron. But we’ll also see something that most fans thought we’d ever see a World’s Finest movie, with Batman & Superman sharing the screen. So those two movies got me thinking, remembering the time well before Avengers when we questioned whether we’d even see a Spider-Man movie let alone approaching a sequel to a rebooted trilogy. These were my top 10 moments in CBM history that made me go I CAN’T BELIEVE I’M SEEING THIS!

Now when compiling this list I’m not saying these were the best moments in the film, though some of them do qualify. These were just the moments where I was simply overcome with pure joy that I actually was witnessing this on the big screen. The movies I chose from where mainly super-hero fair, while films like Road to Perdition & A History of Violence were based on graphic novels. It wasn’t hard to realize those films seeing how they’re set in the very real world. These are movies that fans wouldn’t think we’d ever see in our wildest dreams. These are just my opinion please feel free to chime in with your own moments below. Hope you enjoy the list, and without further adieu.

10. Superman Saves Lois Lane – Superman

Now while I’ll admit I’m not the biggest fan of the original Superman movie I wasn’t born when it came out and didn’t see it until I was already in awe of Tim Burton’s Batman. Superman the movie just didn’t do it for me. With that’d being said I’d be a liar if I didn’t put this on the list, I mean from John Williams awesome score. To the pimp’s “Man that’s a bad suit” but the kicker was the awesome banter between Superman & Lois Lane “You’ve got me? Who’s Got you?” This was a moment that you truly did believe a man could fly, and I’d imagine for the time it came out plenty a comic book fan had to be like I can’t believe we’re seeing this!

9. Nightcrawler attacks the President – X2 X-men United

So many great moments in Bryan Singer’s follow-up to X-Men. And while I was very tempted to put a moment from X-Men here X2 just surpassed its’ predecessor in so many ways I opted to skip it. Singer kicks X2 off with this amazingly choreographed sequence displaying how awesome Nightcrawler can be. I was never a huge fan of the character until I saw how magnificently his powers could be utilized and on the big screen no less! From the classical music to the sound of his Bamf! Which every X-Men fan could picture in their head the sound, but never thought we’d actually see it outside of cartoon form. This scene jumpstarted a story that took the X-Men from the pages of the comic books and into the stratosphere of our conciseness.

8. Blade entrance in Blood batch – Blade

Wesley Snipes is Blade! It’s amazing that before this movie Marvel Comics track record on the big screen was, let’s just say severely lacking. I mean we’re talking about a group that couldn’t even get a successful Punisher film on the big screen. Yet it was this relatively unknown character from that Blackplotation era in the 70s that jump started Marvel’s movie success. Before X-Men & Spider-Man there was Blade. And nothing exemplified how truly badass Wesley Snipes was as the character than this scene that jumpstarted Blade.

7. I’m Batman – Batman

It’s so incredibly funny to me the insane backlash that ole Ben Affleck is getting from being cast as Batman. But I’d imagine it was on par as to fans reactions of Michael Keaton being named as the actor to bring The Dark Knight to life in Burton’s version. If there was ever any doubt that he could pull it off it was done away with his first scene as the character! This snippet is short but the level of pure coolness is beyond measure. Christian Bale could’ve taken notes from Keaton’s steely delivery of the now famous line “I’m Batman”. Damn right you are and I couldn’t believe my eyes that I was actually seeing the character on screen.

6. Spidey vs. The Green Goblin First fight – Spider-Man

I’ll admit Spider-Man is by far my favorite comic book character ever! So when this movie came out in 2002 I was already chomping at the bit to see it. Best I had gotten of seeing Spider-Man to this point was the Saturday Morning cartoon from the 90s. I remember watching re-runs of the awful live action TV show. But never did I think I would get see this character on the big screen. While I feel like the Razor Bat fight, and the bridge fight were excellent moments in this movie. I couldn’t help but feel utterly awestruck from the first encounter of our titular protagonist & his arch-enemy. They choreography was out of this world, but it was just watching Spider-Man move and thwart the Goblin’s plan, and hearing Willem Dafoe in Saturday morning glee “I’ll Get you Spider-Man!” that propelled this scene into greatness. I remember watching this with my brothers and as if on cue we turned to each other exclaiming how unbelievable it was to be witnessing Spider-Man actually on the big screen.

5. Magneto escapes – X2 X-Men United

I could arguably create a top 10 list alone from the many scenes in X2 that’s how magnificent this movie was. Yet combing through it I feel like the Nightcrawler scene, and this scene outshined the competition. Magneto has always been a powerhouse and while it was cool to see him hijack police officer’s guns the first X-Men. It was this scene in X2 that cemented him as a true beast! During the Fatal Attractions arc in the comics fans will remember when Magneto pulled the adamantium from Wolverine’s bones (see below).

It was an extremely brutal display of Magneto’s immense power, one I’m sure we thought would couldn’t even imagine being done on the big screen. Lo and behold Bryan Singer gave us this phenomenal escape by Magneto.

4. The Avenger’s Initiative – Iron Man

Can anyone truly deny how breathtakingly amazing Marvel’s Cinematic Universe has been? It all started with this post credits tease from Iron Man. In its own right in was beyond belief that Marvel Studios had taken this B-list character in Iron Man, with this extremely high risk actor in Robert Downey Jr. And together gave us not just a great CBM, but a flat out great movie. Then to add the cherry on top there was this tease, this promise of even bolder things to come. This scene was short but sweet and left you craving more, just like a good appetizer is supposed to do before the main course.

3. Spidey vs. Doctor Octopus – Spider-Man 2

Again you know how I feel about Spidey, so of course this beyond glorious scene from his best movie would hit this list. While I so wanted to make this my #2 moment, I had to be honest with # 2’s entry. Now this fight this how sequence was fanfreakingtastic! Spider-Man 2 as a whole I absolutely loved, and why it made the 2nd half of Spider-Man 3 so hard to endure. Raimi hit all the right notes in this action packed scene. With a glorious re-emergence of Spider-Man to save his girl fighting on top of a clock tower, to duking it out a top a speeding train. We get see Spidey put his powers on display, as well as see how ruthless Doctor Octopus can be. Love, love, love, loooooooove this freaking scene!

2. Joker’s Bank Robbery – The Dark Knight

The Dark Knight is a masterpiece plain and simple. With this scene that Christopher Nolan uses to start the film he took CBM from simple popcorn flicks to a true work of art. While I could say some other CBMs suffer from trying to emulate Nolan’s real world approach. There’s absolutely no denying how amazing this introduction is to this generation’s Joker. From his complete silence in the midst of pulling of this daring heist to his quiet explanation of his plan, to that extreme close-up and spooky reveal of his face. Ledger’s Joker was established as one not to be effed with. All during a bank robbery that could be put right next to Heat in terms of great robberies put to celluloid. The Dark Knight broke all the rules, and it started with this truly epic moment.

1. Battle of New York – The Avengers

Now I wanted to include this entire last sequence but I figured the clip of above captured the full essence of that last battle. For years Marvel had been building to this, this moment where you’d see not just one amazing super-hero on the big screen fighting an earth shattering threat, but 6! Piece by piece the puzzle was being put together, and after Joss Whedon excellently set the table. We were treated to a full on visual feast! Captain America directed the team, Hulk Smashing, Thor calling down lightening, and Iron Man blasting through the city streets! This sequence kicked down all barriers to what could be shown on the big screen. The Avengers wasn’t steeped in reality it took the best elements of what made us fall in love in comics in the first place put them on full display. What we’d imagine in our heads, whilst playing with action figures or flying through video games was all put on screen. In The Avengers we were given the who’d win in a fight arguments from fan boy aplenty treatment, to a villain in Loki that embodied the God of mischief. It made you laugh shout with exhilaration and flat out leap for joy at its conclusion. From something we’d thought we’d never see to this new surreal era of film. The MCU was here and it was beautiful. Now that Phase One is complete the table is being set once again for Phase Two and I for one can’t wait see what’s next.

Honorable Mentions
While there are so many amazing moments we’ve gotten in CBM I still think the best is yet to come. So I’ve including a couple of possible epic moments from movies we’ve yet to see, and some moments that I was tempted to add to the list but just didn’t quite make it.

Superman saves plane – Superman Returns

I’ll keep this short and sweet remember when you saw this moment. Didn’t you just think damn this going to be the greatest Super-hero movie ever! Then you we’re proven extremely wrong , but still I won’t deny how great this scene was.

Puny God – The Avengers

Without a doubt the greatest Hulk moment ever!! So tempted to put his in the top 10 but left it as apart of the Battle of NY alone. But I could watch this over and over again.

Avengers vs. Ultron – The Avengers Age of Ultron

Of course this movie has even yet to begin filming, but I can already picture the Avengers battling Ultron. And one can only hope it’s even close to as awesome as the pic above.

Rocket Raccoon – Guardians of the Galaxy

We now know who’s the voice, and while I was hoping for someone like Nick Offerman from Parks & Rec or Jason Statham. I’m cool with Bradley Cooper as the choice. I just already can’t believe we’re even going to be seeing this!

Batman meets Superman – Batman/Superman

Seriously one can only hope Batman & Superman’s first meeting is as awesome as this in MoS 2. Why DC hasn’t turned their DCU over to Paul Dini & Bruce Timm? It’s beyond me.

Well that’s the list I hope you enjoyed going through it as much as I enjoyed putting it together. Again feel free to sound off below, and let everyone know what’s your top 10 Can’t Believe I’m Seeing This Moments.

Fantastic list! Agree with everything said. Should have had the suit up from Iron Man, that was such a great scene. Also MOS fighting with Zod was great. other than that think you got it all pretty much down pat.
ScottMontgomery - 9/3/2013, 2:28 PM
Awesome list, even though I think you should have MOS Superman's first flight and mjolnir at the end of Iron Man 2
Odin - 9/3/2013, 3:11 PM
Jason Statham as Rocket Raccoon would've been EPIC.

SnapperCarr - 9/3/2013, 4:14 PM
I think I've seen this list before. It seems familiar.
VIRILEMAN - 9/3/2013, 4:33 PM
GREAT LIST! I completely agree with every one. This is probably the exact list I'd post! Cool.
Lhornbk - 9/3/2013, 4:36 PM
Would take out Joker scene (that one is okay, but nothing truly great in my opinion) and Blade scene (just don't see it as being on the same level as others), and would put in the Hulk smashing Loki scene and Superman/Zod fight from MoS. Actually, would take out Magneto escape scene too, and replace it with Superman vs. Zod, Ursa, and Nom scene in Superman II. It was the best scene of the Reeves Superman movies.
unknownfacts - 9/3/2013, 4:47 PM
Too many epic scenes for me to ever pick just ten,but most of my favorites scenes include Birthday scene in Batman Begins,Dark Knight Trilogy vehicle scenes,Magnetoe scenes,Ironman fight scenes, and Wolverine fight scenes.

SoundWave - 9/4/2013, 12:16 AM
"I'm always angry" is realy epic moment of CBM!
MightyZeus - 9/4/2013, 12:16 AM
I agree with all of them, they where all amazing moments.

My personal favorites is The Avengers forming together towards the end to fight the Chitauri and Loki and from then on it just gets better. I got chills and i got teary.

My other favorite moment was seeing Rocket Raccoon in that bootleg trailer and even before that a Guardians of the Galaxy film being developed. I was and still eagerly hyped to see Rocket Raccoon and the film.

sammac13 - 9/4/2013, 12:27 AM
Great list I agree with everything
Demongod20 - 9/4/2013, 12:35 AM
I would add all the action sequences in Man of Steel. Didn't expect them to be moving at super speeds while fighting. I also didn't expect the battle with Zod to work its way into outer space. My jaw literally dropped to the floor.
FlapjackAce - 9/4/2013, 12:39 AM
You forgot the galactus cloud, haha jk. Great list though, I agree with them all.
Moohika - 9/4/2013, 12:42 AM
I Really agree about Bruce Timm and Paul Dini, WB really should bring them onboard. I remember as a kid seeing that Batman/Superman special and I can only hope when these two juggernauts meet on the big screen it will be just as epic.
Dreamweaver7 - 9/4/2013, 12:44 AM
I remember seeing Avengers at midnight on opening night and just sitting there like a kid on Christmas morning during the battle of New York. Especially the "I'm always angry" moment followed by a massive falcon punch
Ace101 - 9/4/2013, 12:48 AM
great list. my number 1 is also the avengers team up-final battle sequence.

"Can anyone truly deny how breathtakingly amazing Marvel’s Cinematic Universe has been?"

I deny it.

Breathtakingly amazing?

IM1, Avengers = awesome

everything else = not so much

The Avengers has cast such a positive Halo effect on the MCU it's not even funny.
JorEllinator - 9/4/2013, 1:00 AM
Bane breaks Batman (TDKR)
Watchmen opening titles (Watchmen)
Captain America crashes the plane (CA TFA)
Xaviers paralysed (X Men First Class)
Captain America leads the team (Avengers)
Batman "dies" (TDKR)
OldBenKenobi - 9/4/2013, 1:00 AM
Amazing list. Imo I would put Spidey vs Green Goblin's final battle at 1 (cause that movie blew my mind as a kid) and move everything back for that.

But yeah, great article.
feedonatreefrog - 9/4/2013, 1:06 AM
Anyways, here's my list:

Spiderman swinging through New York in Spiderman 1. ("Holy crap, they're actually pulling it off!")

Thor gets banished to Earth. ("I can't believe we have a Thor movie!")

Hulk punching that big flying thing, Avengers circle shot.

Yellow and Blue jumpsuits in First Class
1944 again in First Class
Seeing Wolverine's claws for the first time in X1.

The entirety of Watchmen (not that I think it's the best movie in the world).

All the action in Man of Steel. Superspeed, everything.
Swiftsword777 - 9/4/2013, 1:10 AM
Cool list very happy to see blade made the list.
CoulsonLives - 9/4/2013, 1:20 AM
Wish you put the Becoming Spider-Man scene from TASM. As well as "I'm always angry", Iron Man suit up, Joker hint in Batman Begins, Spider-Man No more in Spidey 2...
Jwe75 - 9/4/2013, 1:34 AM
Most def. is the Stark meeting vs Loki in Stark Tower - We knew Loki from Thor movie and Stark just standing there wo suit. That was a loong wait :)

Thor uppercut vs Hulk - was the most awesome moment, i could now believe we were get to see Thor vs Hulk on big screen :)

Iron man 3, Mark 42 - was kick ass suit. We never seen anything like that in Iron man movies

Assemble scene Avengers - we all know why :)

Thor arrives on earth vs Iron man Avengers - just epic
Ceejay - 9/4/2013, 2:02 AM
Everything about Blade was bad, worst of all the fight choreography where vampires simply had to be tapped and they burst into shit. Vampires with guns lol, they're supposed to move fast and have super strength. In Blade all they did is pose with their teeth and make threats, worse vampires ever.
dadisatish - 9/4/2013, 2:05 AM
no man of steel smallville fight????.....dude ur list is incomplete.....
Orphix - 9/4/2013, 2:15 AM
I think the most amazing thing about this list and following discussion is that it shows how spoilt we now are for great scenes and sequences. Even some of the bad films have genuine moments of loveliness.

I always really enjoy that scene in X3 when Xavier dies whilst Magento and the X-men look on. And I always enjoy the creation of Sandman scene in Spiderman 3.

I'm nearly 40 years old. I remember a time when these things were just pipedreams. A time when Adam West and Christopher Reeve was all we had and, dammit, we were grateful!!

Now we complain if the actor doesn't have the right hair or costume is slightly different. We now say they are disrespecting the source and the filmakers are arrogant if they decide to depart from certain elements of the comicbook.

But now - 30 years later - many of us older comicbook fans can feel vindicated. All those stories and characters we loved and KNEW should be made as films and would be successful at the box office is now coming true.
hush - 9/4/2013, 2:19 AM
The opening scene in Watchmen between 'the masked intruder' and The Comedian should have made the list, but never the less, good work.
Lozzy - 9/4/2013, 2:33 AM
Moments that will defiantly make this list in the future.

*Batman and Superman first meet.
*Death of Gwen Stacy.
*First appearance of Thanos.
*Civil War.
Ceejay - 9/4/2013, 2:36 AM
1: Superman Returns, The airplane saving sequence has never been bettered.

2: X-Men 2, Nightcraler's assault on the White House.

3: X-Men 2, Magneto's escape from his plastic prison.

4: Road to Perdition, Sulivan machine guns Rooney's men in the rain (flipping Oscar winnnig!)

5: Transformers Rise of the Fallen, Optimus Prime vs Megatron, Starscream and Grindor in the forest to the death.

6: Watchmen, Dr Manhattan's origin sequence.

7: Batman Begins, Batman interrogates a dirty cop by hanging him upside down from the rooftops.

8: Watchmen, opening credit montage of changing times of the superhero intertwined with world events.

9: Spider-man 2, Spider-man vs Doc Octopus all the way to the train.

10: Spider-man, end sequence of acrobatics to the flagpole.
LittleDanglyThing - 9/4/2013, 2:37 AM
As awful as Superman Returns was that scene was pretty damn great and better than any scene in Man of Steel.
This is a GREAT list! I'm not even a fan of Brian Singers x-men but those really were good scenes I can't argue with it and that Avengers scene gives me chills EVERY time.
LittleDanglyThing - 9/4/2013, 2:42 AM
Also, Bruce Timm and Paul Dini for DCU PLEASE.
That scene when Bats and Supes meet is amazing.
EarOne - 9/4/2013, 3:04 AM
you left just ONE that's a must-be-included scene:

the creation of SANDMAN, in the other-wise FLAWED Spider-Man 3. the scene's got drama, awesome f/x and the unforgettable factor.

the whole atmosphere and animation just make you FEEL what the character's goin thru at that exact moment..confused, scared, amazed and desperate.

also...there's the batpod scene as part of the TDK's chase scene and the human torch's first encounter with the silver surfer, in (again) a very FLAWED FF: Rise of the silver surfer.
Oh, and gotta mention this Iceman FINALLY icing up, in X-Men: The Last Stand (which i don't think is nowhere near as bad as everyone else).

now, if we're talkin a NON-comic book super hero flick, i gotta include that incredible scene in UNBREAKABLE, where bruce willis' kid is pointing a gun at him to 'test' Sam Jackson's theory that his dad's got super powers. that scene's just THE bomb of all super hero movies.
and also Hancock..sure the second half just sucks BIG time, but, that first scene where (for the first time EVAH) we got to see a DRUNK super hero chasing the bad the air. that's just one hilarious scene.
NBAfanaddict - 9/4/2013, 3:44 AM
Nice moments. The one that will always stand out to me is when we first see Irob Man in his classic red and yellow armor. When he landed and the camera panned on him, I literally whispered to myself "This movie is going to be awesome!!" Thor kicking frost giant butt would've been on my list.
