One of these talented artists will win the "Inaction" art contest, and a $400 sumo sac. Help us choose the winner by casting your vote!

This fan art contest was described as an Inaction art contest because we wanted to see what superheroes (or villains) do on their days off, or when they AREN'T fighting crime (or doing it). Judge for yourself who has submitted the best art.

The winner will become the proud owner of THIS awesome sumo sac gamer--worth $400! Girl not included. (Note: The sumo sac can only be mailed within the continental united states, or Canada. Winners outside the contest area will still get an awesome prize pack of swag we have lying around the office: T-Shirts, DVD's, etc, and whoever got the most votes after that will get the sumo sac.)

You have till Wednesday the 29th to vote. Click on the name to see their artwork.

I think in this contest the winner announce wednesday a day after the deadline 210409 and the staff would be judge, because this is not serious, change the rules like this and you dont have the date for last day to vote??? what happened!!!

FOR THE ARTISTS ALL WORK I LIKED GOOD LUCK!!!

I picked John, because I really liked the art in the picture, plus it was funny. I gave Reid G. second just because I laughed pretty good when I clicked on the picture, just because I could see him acting all crazy in my hand saying that to himself, but missed the top because I like to see color in my art. Frank got third his picture was the most well rounded, but was just missing something.

Great job to everyone, hope to see more in the next contest, maybe ill dust off my scanner and join the fun too.

First: John Bellotti jr.

Second: Reid G.

Third: Frank DeAngelo

EDIT: I'll go on record saying this isn't a great way to tell who is the best, I mean i could use IE, fox fire, chrome, opera, so on and so forth to add more and more votes on the person I want to win. Unless i'm wrong..... Wouldnt it be better just to post are pick?

Iknow i'm not the great artist, butwhy's germaingallegos piece so good? XD

It's not about what's good. It's what's popular. I also submitted but I don't expect to win. It's just fun being a part of it. I suppose I could email all my friends and ask them to vote, but really? I'd prefer the "box of swag" instead of the sumo sac anyway. My apartment's too small. Hurry up and win already!

Micah Brown to me is head and shoulders above the the rest with his pics of the Hulk & the Thing and Batman in the cave. There were a few Spiderman pics that were cool also I just think Micah's pics had more detail.

@vinnievincentchente: I can't figure it out either. I don't even think it's that funny...maybe it's just us. Anyways, great job to everyone. I just want to know the winner already
Shaman

vinnievincentchente & dbzfan- Oh no it's not just you two. That's why i don't like "voting" to elect a winner. germaingallegos just knows more people than we do and he's asking them to vote for him. Honestly, i like his art and all but in no way is it the best and i'm pretty sure no one here would disagree. Maybe the "rules" didn't include "judging categories" like humour, style, originality, detail and stuff like that but this competition should have judges and it shouldn't be freely given to the person with the biggest family or the most amount of friends. In this specific contest, here's who are the best imo.

Peanuts vs. Deadpool
Spidey nitting watching wheel of fortune
Hulk and Thing arm wrestling
Bats and Supes playing halo3
and a few others...

I for one don't care if i win or not, i was glad to participate but i do want the winner to be judged for his art and not his contacts. Hopefully, this pole is just to "help" the judges. Thanks to Shibazz and who ever voted for me and congrats on EVERYONE's fine art :))

JamesH - 4/24/2009, 9:29 AM
Yep, we cant help it at times coz when someone's popular, he/she sure is popular. At least the judges said "HELP" us choose the winners with your votes.

Win or lose (although the box of swags seem really cool), im juz glad i made a lot of people laugh their asses off with my Deadpool piece! And i support all the other humorous and deserving pieces! Well done!

Thanks for the support guys!

The judges should have picked the top 15 or so and then let us vote cuz even the ones who thought "inaction" meant in action, supers doing something action-y, are getting a fair chance >:( Will the box contain $400 worth of swag?

THEHAWK - 4/24/2009, 3:47 PM
My vote is for eigther Shibaz's arm wrestling one, or the Peanuts one. But Shaman's was funny as hell.
It doesn't seem like everyone grasped the "Inaction" part of the contest. lol.

Contest was a lot of fun:)

I actually haven't been on this website before- I didn't have any idea what a 'box-o-swag' was at the time, and I wasn't eligible for the bean bag. I think it was just cool to put some work up and be a part of it. I agree that I didn't get some of the other pieces but I'm not the judge:) On one hand it'd be good to have categories for being judged etc; and it's pretty obvious some people are a lot more skilled in the drawing dept than others but in a way, I guess that was sorta what made the contest fun- u don't know what to expect or who's gonna enter after you. I mean it's a bean bag, we're not going after a million bucks so it's more about the "get your work noticed" more than anything else?

Cheers

do you get the feeling that the whole voting thing isn't really working? maybe next time you should make it that you can only vote if you leave your details or a comment. otherwise i could just submit a stick figure and then run a script(im sure tech nerds could do something like this) and just keep voting again and again.you need criteria to be judged by too because too many of them are not doing what the contest states or are just bad rip offs of previously done art. i like seeing original pieces of peoples interpretations hand drawn. mentioning some of the pieces like charlie donkins spiderman knitting or martin yangs green lantern changing a bulb: they say "i'm off duty" which i like.

lol. I made this on photoshop. I didn't enter it because I don't think it's fair to judge photoshop pictures against hand drawn pictures because hand drawn should win every time. But I thought it was pretty cool, so I wanted to post it here and show it to you guys.

Oh, brother. I don't think Matt Wagner would appreciate this pic since the Batman image was taken from his graphic work. On second thought, he's doing so well that he might just chuckle at the misguided tribute.

Well for the next contest, i feel the entries should be judged with categories. There shouldn't be a winner for every category, but the winner would be what the judges feel the entry that ranks highest in "average" of all the categories put together. This way everyone would have a chance even if they don't have the same resources as everyone else. Every entry would be judged in 7 different categories:

-Concept of the contest (ex: inaction)
-Humor/Drama
-Originality
-Lighting/Shading
-Dynamics (action sequences, not necessarily fighting)
-Proportions (accuracy)
-Cleanliness (esthetics)

Each entry would get a grade from 1 to 10 in each category making the entry's final grade from 1 to 70. The entry with the highest grade wins. If there is a tie, the judges will examine both entries and compare them in each category and the one with the upper hand in most categories wins.

I think this way, it would make the competition a bit more serious but still very very fun. And not to mention, fair for everyone. Notice how i didn't put "colors" or "style" so that the people who have more of a "professional" talent wouldn't automaticaly win.

I even offer myself as a judge which would take me out of the competition and i could submit the first entry to be used as an example of the concept which CBM could use to announce their contest. Let us know what you think CBM :)
JamesH
JamesH - 4/27/2009, 8:59 AM
Nice idea there and I agree with you 100% Shaman... except for cleanliness (although esthetics is acceptable) and proportions. I usually draw clean and proportioned characters but to be fair, some artists have their own styles which are not clean nor proportional.

I think anatomy would be better for proportions coz they can tweak the proportions but the underlying anatomy would still be there. :)

Here's a tweak of the categories you put up:

Relevance to the theme
OVerall Impact (Humor/Drama )
Originality
Lighting/Shading
Dynamics
Anatomy
Esthetics

This is an art contest and the choices shouldnt solely depend on the theme alone other wise, a sleeping stick figure with a nametag "Hulk" would win as he would be doing absolutely nothing. It shouldnt be of art skills alone as well coz it has to be following the theme. All factors should be taken in and considered equally when choosing the winners.

BTW, juz to comment on Elbeaster's comment that handdrawn should always win against photoshopped works, i dont think that's fair bro. Were pals but gotta disagree. ;)

If a person juz grabbed online images and cropped them together in pshop, i agree it shouldnt win but when someone uses pshop to make something from scratch, he deserves as much chance as any traditional artist. :) And remember, handdrawn entries can be traces/copies of existing artworks as well and those shouldnt be allowed as much as copied digital works.

Great corrections buddy, and very good point on ElBeaster's comment!
ElBeaster
ElBeaster - 4/27/2009, 1:29 PM
That is true that it could be made from scratch on photoshop; I wasn't thinkin' of that. Mine was just two pics cropped together, so that definitely shouldn't count. But it is kinda hard to judge hand drawn against something that was made on the computer.

I was just looking at the voting results and I think everyone can agree with me when I say that this voting thing isn't working. The ones that are being voted for the most aren't that good. I find it really hard to believe that over 170 people came on this site, looked at every single entry and, with an open and unbiased mind, voted for pieces like the two-face one from Germain Gallegos or the green lantern one from Martyn Yang. I mean come on. Against all the other pieces they wouldn't even come in the top 20. I think it's pretty obvious that some people in this contest are cheating. In some way they're getting a lot friends and contacts to vote for them just so they can win. That's unfair. Like I said this voting thing isn't working.

Comicbookmovie.com I understand that you're trying to change things up with how you choose the winner, but don't let the public vote like this again. It's really unfair to the people in the contest who actually did a good job. You said you wanted recommendations on how to vote the next contest. Here's one. Have judges, who actually know what makes a picture good for the contest, judge them. That's the only fair way. Thank You.
JamesH
JamesH - 4/27/2009, 8:03 PM
that or disregard all the votes that came from inactive accounts or those who have been registered juz during the time the contest was held. That would even up the play field.

Elbeaster, it may be a bit hard for someone who doenst read much comics but trust me, any comic loving judge would recognize a copy/clone of existing artworks. :D As for comparing digital and traditional pieces, some judges may have their preferences and would consider traditional over digital and vice versa but still a better artwork is still a better artwork regardless. :)

There are champions of traditional art like Alex Ross (Kingdom Come) and Joe Jusko (Mavel Masterpieces I) and Boris Vallejo as well as his wife, Julie Bell(Marvel Masterpieces and Xmen cards). Also, there are the modern champions of Digital art like Djurjevic (Daredevil covers) and Sejic (Witchblade). Then there are those who use both like Adi Granov (who designed the iron movie piece). All have different styles and employ different methods but all of em are equally great. :)

Ouch.

I for one was also pretty surprised with the way the voting was going, but putting down other people's work is pretty harsh. Suggesting they're cheating is also pretty harsh too. I have to admit I publicised the fact I was entering a contest on my facebook which probably was where the most of my votes came from but it doesn't say you can't do that.

Given the way this is going, I'd rather formally take myself out of the running thanks.
