EXCLUSIVE: Interview With Amazing Spider-Man Writer Fred Van Lente!

EXCLUSIVE: Interview With Amazing Spider-Man Writer Fred Van Lente!

The comic book writer talks to me about his involvement with Cowboys & Aliens and shares his thoughts about how the cast is shaping up, the chances of a Marvel Zombies movie and who he thinks should play Hercules and Ares...

Fred Van Lente is a New York Times bestselling author and comic book writer. Some of his most notable work is with Marvel where he has written titles such as Incredible Hercules, Marvel Zombies, X-Men: Noir, Amazing Spider-Man and Halo: Blood Line. His original graphic novel Cowboys & Aliens (co-written with Andrew Foley) is being adapted into motion picture by DreamWorks directed by Iron Man 2‘s Jon Favreau and starring Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford.

When I recently contacted Fred, he was kind enough to share his thoughts with me on the upcoming Cowboys and Aliens movie, the possibility of a Marvel Zombies adaptation and who he thinks should play Hercules and Ares! Check out the interview below and have your say in the usual place!

As co-author of Cowboys and Aliens are you looking forward to seeing Jon Favreau's adaptation when it's released next year?

Very much so! They seem to have a really smart take on the material.

What do you think of the casting choices so far? (Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford, Olivia Wilde etc) Are they how you imagined them while writing the comic?

Well, I can't say I imagine any actor for any particular role when writing a comic. Because it's my job to work with the artist to visualize a character in a specific way, cleaving toward a well-known face can be counterproductive and dilute my guy or gal's unique appearance.

Recently I compared the look of a famous Marvel villain who we see unmasked for the first time in a series I'm doing to Darwyn Cooke's depiction of Richard Stark's Parker. That's about as close to "casting" a specific actor I've done in a while.

But the cast so far for Cowboys & Aliens is terrific -- and I love Sam Rockwell, so it's great he's joined the film too.

Have you been involved with the movie at all?

Platinum has been great about keeping me appraised of the casting choices and story changes as the production moves along.

Some of your most notable work has also included writing Marvel Zombies 3 & 4. Is that a series that you'd like to see adapted onto the big screen?

That would be a tough one to pull off, particularly since different studios would have different rights to Zombie Spider-Man, Zombie Daredevil, Zombie X-Men, Zombie Hulk, et cetera. Although the basic idea of Marvel Zombies 3 -- wise-cracking robot takes on zombie hordes -- could make a great comedy/horror/action film. But I demand points on the back end!

Hercules is another character that you've done a fair bit of work with. Would you like to see a movie featuring the character? And do you have any ideas who'd be a good choice to play him?

I think the premise of Incredible Hercules, with this boozy legendary demigod training a teenager to be his replacement in modern-day America, could make a terrific, fun, summer blockbuster in the Men in Black/Ghostbusters fame.

I would have Seth Rogen play Hercules. I'm totally serious. Or Jack Black. Somebody who looks like they spent too much time in the tavern.

And Ares? Picture Vin Diesel in that helmet and tell me that would not kick ass.

Can you give us any hints for what to expect from your work on that title or any others in the future?

I have a brand-new story arc in Web of Spider-Man going on right now, "The Extremist," in which a super powered assassin has his sights set on Mayor J. Jonah Jameson, and the only person who can save him is -- guess who -- Mr. Threat or Menace himself.

DK2005 - 5/17/2010, 12:40 PM
Please stick to comics. Leave the casting to the people who do it for a living.

JoshWilding - 5/17/2010, 12:55 PM
Thanks guys! :)

Personally, I'm not sure about Black or Rogen playing Hercules (although I can definitely see his point about why he'd like them to play the character) but Vin Diesel is a pretty good casting choice for Ares in my opinion!

LEE: I watched Moon for the first time a few days ago and what an Oscar worthy performance by Rockwell! I would have loved to have seen his take on Tony Stark had he got the role!

ANIL: Will do bud, thanks for the info! :)

DDD: It's been good to see you over here where the news is - it felt a lot like I was only seeing you over in "Fan-Fic" lately!
LEEE777 - 5/17/2010, 12:59 PM

JoshWilding - 5/17/2010, 1:11 PM
ANIL: Wasn't Cruise in the running to play Stark at one point? I havent seen a movie he's been in that I havent enjoyed so I would've been all for him being Iron Man!

LEE: Yeah, I may have wound you up in the past when you've suggested him for Namor but I actually like the guy! He'd make a great Ares though..! Oh, and here's the trailer for Moon!

LEEE777 - 5/17/2010, 1:13 PM
Hey he's a great NAMOR too, (for box office anyway lol)

: D

But Behr = Namor!

Cheers for the TRAILER @ JOSH!

LEE: No worries, and hell yes to Behr as Namor!

tea: Thanks mate - I couldnt have asked for a better award, lol! Yeah, I picked up Moon on blu-ray and it really is one of the best sci-fi movies ever IMO especially considering it was made on such a low budget! :)

Oh, and be sure to check out an editorial I posted last week - Why Kathryn Prescott Is Perfect For The Role Of Pixie! - where my obsession with Wales' only superhero takes a stalker like turn, lol!
ReillyParker - 5/17/2010, 2:34 PM
As awesome as this guy is, I'm gonna hafta go with the majority here saying he should leave the casting to the directors, kinda glad he doesn't cast actors in his comics.

@Tea: @_@ Boobs... And I agree, Rhys Meyers should not play Namor. I actually can't picture anyone at the moment who can to tell ya the truth. Damn that is a nice rack...

@LEE: Dude where the hell you been?! I've been waiting on you to comment on my article. Oh speaking of

I know I'm shameless... Check it out anyways! It's worth the read ^_^

P.S. @Anil: If Namor is a bisexual, he's a bisexual who's been bangin the White Queen. I don't know what that has to do with anything but just wanted to throw that out there LoL
Spectre94 - 5/17/2010, 3:35 PM
Vin Diesel as Ares would totally kick butt. I was thinking more of Gerard Butler for Ares but Vin Diesel could be awesome.
Ranger14 - 5/17/2010, 5:27 PM
Bana for Namor. The other names being thrown around are too small.

Please keep Tom Cruise away from Comic Book movies. The only movie I ever liked him in was The Last Samurai. Otherwise, I could never stand Tom Cruise. Yeah...I know most others like Tom Cruise.
WakeUp - 5/17/2010, 8:24 PM
Days of Thunder kicked ass....go Mellow Yellow!
DDD - 5/18/2010, 1:32 AM
Behr for Namor was your picK Tea@?

Oh man, I can't behr it! lol

Damm excellent pick!

And I'm with you, no Vin for any CBM!
DDD - 5/18/2010, 3:07 AM
Batcave@ Somehow I can't see Ares the War God with
a thick New Jersey accent! lol No to Vin Diesel!
