Long-time Comics Advertiser Is Going Out Of Business

Hostess, the snack company behind the greatest snack on Earth, the Twinkie, is shutting their doors and going out of business. Click to find out why and to see ads featuring DC and Marvel characters for the company and Twinkie references in movie history.

On November 16, 2012, Hostess Brands Inc. today announced that it is winding down operations and has filed a motion with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court seeking permission to close its business and sell its assets, including its iconic brands and facilities. Bakery operations have been suspended at all plants. Delivery of products will continue and Hostess Brands retail stores will remain open for several days in order to sell already-baked products. Some of food and snacks that the company made were Ho Hos, Cupcakes, Fruit Pies, Doughtnuts, Wonder Bread, Yodels, and the greatest snack on Earth – the Twinkie. Many childhoods (including mine) were destroyed by the lost.

Hostess has teamed up with comics before. There are some older ads that have heroes from both Marvel and DC.

Hostess has also made special edition snacks for heroes. The first photo we see are an ad for snack packs that feature Batman, Superman, Flash, and Green Lantern on the box. It’s funny how Flash and Green Lantern got special edition snacks and Batman and Superman didn’t. In the second photo we see special edition Hulk snack packs by Hostess.

The Twinkie has made many references in well known movies. Here are some references to the almighty Twinkie.

As a kid I loved Twinkies and those chocolate cupcakes. Can’t believe they are going to be gone. Also can’t believe Wonder Bread was part of Hostess and that will be gone. That’s my favorite type of bread. This is a sad day. Peace.

EVERYONE should be concerned about this. Yeah its a Cake and Bread company , but more importantly its a LONGTIME american fixture in business.

This an example of UNION thugs bullying a company out of business. The workers went on strike in a crappy economy( yes boys and girls...Obama is lying to you , we're in rough shape) .The strike went on so long with their over the top demands that it shut the company down long enough to hurt.

So now, if you're of those 18,000 hostess employee's, would you rather have those union demands..or a FRIGGIN JOB?

Yes Hostess had a older business model, but it Employed people. If you're in a good economy, maybe it would be cool to demand better wages or whatever, but this was GREEDY UNION encouraging workers to strike when they should've been happy to at least have a job.

This is one story where the politics MATTER. Unions used to stand for workers, now they stand for dems and greed.

To everyone complaining about if another editor posted this it'd be on main, [frick] off and for gods sake get over yourselves! Nobody gives a shit!

Regarding the article, this is why unions are a huge problem!

You are 110% spot on the money my friend. Couldn't have said it better myself.

Hostess is going out of business because of the labor unions. Period, end of story. Let a venture capitalist buy up Hostess, turn it non-union and HQ it in a republican run, business friendly, right to work state and it'd boom!!!

kevberg - 11/17/2012, 2:59 PM

thanks. What the reality here is, because of over reaching, 18,000 people are outta jobs.

The company will liquidate the popular assets ( they don't just make twinkies folks) to other companies, then those people will probably just shift their own people to those brands. Most of those 18,000 will never see those jobs back.

I ask everyone, If you're one of the 18,000, would you like those union demands that never came...or your job back?

I'm as straight as the next guy(actually I'm a lesbian in a mans body), but I'm gonna miss shoving two moist cream filled Ding Dongs in my mouth at the same time. Godspeed Hostess ,Godspeed.
DioFoRio - 11/17/2012, 3:06 PM
@Misterniceguy...you're probably too young to get the significance. Anywho I miss those adds in the back of comics with Spiderman or whoever filling up on sugary goodness to fight crime.
ThatOneDude - 11/17/2012, 3:07 PM
NO!! Anything but the Twinkie!!
DioFoRio - 11/17/2012, 3:07 PM

DioFoRio - 11/17/2012, 3:08 PM
it's not like we wont see them again...just a sign of the times....was crazy when blockbuster went out of business
CaptainObvious - 11/17/2012, 3:15 PM
A world without Twinkies is like a year without the sun.
DrainBamage - 11/17/2012, 3:24 PM
Gotta agree with Kevberg on this one. This strike was badly timed and poorly executed. I went through something similar.

It took a while for the hotel industry to recover after 9/11. Our numbers plummeted and stayed that way for years after the attacks. So imagine our surprise when our union, UNITE HERE, decided to start pushing for raises and more benefits. Those of us capable of thinking rationally all gave out a collective 'are you kidding? We're lucky we're still open!'

Nonetheless, the mindless drones let the union leaders talk them into authorizing a strike. Luckily, it didn't happen, but a lot of us we're pretty sure that we would have been 'Si Se Puedes-ing' our asses right into the unemployment line if it had.
kevberg - 11/17/2012, 3:33 PM

What about NYC and NJ after Sandy hit.
there we're electricians and construction workers that headed up to help ....from states like Louisiana and Mississippi that were turned away after they got their and threatened with Violence by Union idiots.

Theres actually You Tube videos and audio of guys in the street, calling them scabs threatening folks, and chanting " union, union"at the folks that were coming up, trying to help.

Governor Cristie put out some BS that it was a misunderstanding..that they need to sign a UNION compliance form...But theres actual evidence those thugs came after guys trying to HELP after a major storm and they we're turned away.

I don't blame some folks that are under the impression that unions are like they were....supposed to help watch out for the american worker...but now they bully , threaten , intimidate so that the union bosses get rich and take the workers dues and use them soley for dem causes.

kevberg - 11/17/2012, 3:37 PM
anyway... sorry to see a somewhat historic company like Hostess go. I still remember all those adds in comics and the ties like the He-man stuff.

someone will buy the Twinkie , Ho-ho and Wonder brands....so they'll be around...but its a shame that this happened.
