LOOPER Director Rian Johnson Open To Helming A Comic Book Movie In Future

LOOPER Director Rian Johnson Open To Helming A Comic Book Movie In Future

With Looper set to hit the big screen this Friday, director Rian Johnson has confirmed that there have been "conversations" about him helming a comic book movie, and while he's currently busy focusing on original projects, he would certainly consider doing so in future.

In an interview with Vulture, director Rian Johnson was asked whether he has been approached by any of the major studios to helm a comic book movie. As you can see from reading his comments below, he's been approached and IS interested, but clearly seems far more intent at this point in pursuing original projects like Looper. A shame, but understandable, especially as his latest film has been heralded as a "masterpiece"!

"There's always conversations. It's flattering to be in that circle of people who are thought about for those things, and I'm a big fan of those movies, so it's fun to talk about them. Right now, I'm focusing on writing my next film, and it's an original thing I'm working on. Not that I'd shut down the possibility in the future, but I'm in this spot right now where I can get these original movies made, and that's not going to last forever. As long as that's happening, I want to get as many of my own things made as possible."

Which comic book movie do you think Rian Johnson would be a good match for? Make sure to sound off with your thoughts in the usual place, and click on the link at the bottom of the page to read his comments on Looper, Breaking Bad and his attempts to find out more about The Dark Knight Rises from Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

In the futuristic action thriller Looper, time travel will be invented – but it will be illegal and only available on the black market. When the mob wants to get rid of someone, they will send their target 30 years into the past, where a "looper" – a hired gun, like Joe (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) – is waiting to mop up. Joe is getting rich and life is good… until the day the mob decides to "close the loop," sending back Joe’s future self (Bruce Willis) for assassination. The film is written and directed by Rian Johnson and also stars Emily Blunt, Paul Dano, and Jeff Daniels. Ram Bergman and James D. Stern produce.

Bruce Willis as Joseph Simmons
Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Joseph Simmons
Emily Blunt as Sara
Paul Dano as Seth
Noah Segan as Kid Blue
Jeff Daniels as Jack Mitchell
Piper Perabo as Suzie
Garret Dillahunt as Jesse

Yes. [frick]ing. Please.
Ha1frican - 9/26/2012, 12:21 PM
I would love to see Daredevil with a noir approach
sweetre15 - 9/26/2012, 12:21 PM
He should direct the live action Cowboy Bebop.....his style is tailor made for it AND he's a fan of it.
The4thWall - 9/26/2012, 12:33 PM
He'd be perfect for Daredevil
jimpinto24 - 9/26/2012, 12:36 PM
I would like to see Rian Johnson helm DD, Nova, or Iron Fist movies.
THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - 9/26/2012, 12:45 PM
Make it a DC movie please. They need you.
UltimaRex - 9/26/2012, 12:45 PM
I've yet to see Looper but I've heard great things.

Justice League 2: Doomsday?

superotherside - 9/26/2012, 12:46 PM
Hmmm... not sure. I'd have to see more of his films. Although Looper looks pretty good.
Protonite - 9/26/2012, 12:58 PM
@superotherside - I think you should watch Brick, his first full-length movie. Didn't know Rian Johnson back then, and was my first JGL movie as well. It's a solid piece, apparently made with a budget less than $500,000.
TruthJusticeSuperman - 9/26/2012, 1:00 PM
Batman reboot love to see more detective side of batman in the new movies. Felt Christopher Nolan's version lacked that, If you seen brick then I think he will bring a noir type fell to batman almost long Halloween type.
thewonderer - 9/26/2012, 1:02 PM
Chris Nolan went from original movies to the masterpiece that is the Dark Knight Trilogy

Rian Johnson is just as talented if not more, so he would work wonders on pretty much anything
GreenLanternRulez - 9/26/2012, 1:03 PM
Green Lantern 2 director PLEASE!
Ha1frican - 9/26/2012, 1:05 PM
@LizardKing71 i get what you mean
Ha1frican - 9/26/2012, 1:06 PM
@thewonderer idk if i would call the WHOLE trilogy a masterpiece ;) but that is a good point
CaptainAmerica31 - 9/26/2012, 1:16 PM
I would say he helms Batman Defiently or justice league. @thewonderer saying the dark knight trilogy is a master piece is but of an over statement
aral - 9/26/2012, 1:19 PM
I hope DC would book him now. Hello WB executives READ HERE.
mattattack - 9/26/2012, 1:20 PM
And this is why he's a class act director. Someone who wants to put out original films as priority? Awesome. I loved Brick, Brothers Bloom, and think Looper will be his best film yet!

The second to last skidder looks like Stan Lee.
LeoORourke - 9/26/2012, 2:36 PM
I hope that Johnson goes for Daredevil, seems like a perfect fit for him.

CaptainAmerica31 - 9/26/2012, 2:54 PM
I have doubts about marvel hiring a director like rian Johnson for a non avenger movie
THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - 9/26/2012, 2:55 PM
ohh no I am not 39. It's just a reference to the year the first Batman comic came out, May 1939 haha.

Tea! You made me spit my drink out with the caps comment! Lol
thewonderer - 9/26/2012, 7:34 PM
@spidey and african

I don't care what you guys think and I didn't ask you either. The general consensus has already placed Nolans Batman Trilogy as one of the best trilogies of all time and some of the best MOVIES of all time.
Giznad - 9/26/2012, 8:56 PM
@wonderer, Ha1frican just said you have a good point and you say "I didn't ask you" just because he may think the WHOLE trilogy may not be perfect? Is it safe to assume if I check out your other comments on other articles you're probably one of the biggest douchebags of all time?
OnePunchBaldy - 9/26/2012, 9:49 PM
Cowboy Bebop please! I don't even care if he reuses JGL as Spike & Bruce Willis as Jet... hell that's perfect! He's a fan too! Plus Looper even seems like Coboy Bebop-ish. And I heard it's "awesometacular!" - (Jeremy Jahns)
sweetre15 - 9/27/2012, 12:51 AM
@spideyboy: Co-Sign lol....for the most part not 100% but for the most part.
marvel72 - 9/27/2012, 4:16 AM
@ the wonderer

i can see why some people think batman begins & the dark knight are perfect but not the third film, you can like it all you want but i wouldn't go as far as far to say a perfect trilogy.

no comic book movie or any other type of movie has a perfect trilogy,i think toy story is almost there.
Protonite - 9/27/2012, 7:12 AM
@spideyboy - HELL YES to Cowboy Bebop. However I'm not too sure about the cast you suggested. But Rian Johnson and JGL could be the new Scorsese-DiCaprio. So, with that in mind....
thewonderer - 9/27/2012, 12:22 PM

I never called it perfect.

I called it a masterpiece, like Jaws or Back to the Future. Those aren't perfect either
thewonderer - 9/27/2012, 12:25 PM
Also Marvel 72, Batman Begins and TDK aren't perfect either
dancingmonkey08 - 9/27/2012, 5:27 PM
Awesome, he is open to doing comic book movies in the future. Thats fine that he is focusing on his own original movie because we dont technically need him for a comic book movie for the moment. Marvel Studios movies all have directors until 2015 and the only movies DC are going to release are Man Of Steel (which has its director) and I dont think he would be suited to Justice League. I couldnt care less about other comic book movies. So let him spend the next 3 years on his own stuff and then either Marvel or DC needs to grab him for Phase 3 or (hopefully) post-JLA movies
RaleighAntrobus - 10/15/2012, 2:44 AM
HELL NO to Joseph Gordon-Leavitt as Spike.
