The 85th Academy Awards were aired at the Dolby Theater at Hollywood & Highland Center.

The Academy Awards, as of February 20, 2013, officially re-branded as The Oscars, are a set of awards given annually for excellence of cinematic achievements. The Oscar statuette is officially named the Academy Award of Merit and is one of nine types of Academy Awards. Organized and overseen by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), the awards are given each year at a formal ceremony. The AMPAS was originally conceived by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer studio executive Louis B. Mayer as a professional honorary organization to help improve the film industry’s image and help mediate labor disputes. The awards themselves were later initiated by the Academy as awards "of merit for distinctive achievement" in the industry.

Do you smell it boys? Its the death of CBM's.
iJackSparrow - 2/24/2013, 9:13 PM
I want Ben Affleck's Daredevil reboot by Ben Affleck and Marvel Studios ASAP.
word1one - 2/24/2013, 9:14 PM
Best visual effects... Life of Pi? I think it's safe to say, that there was a little bit of favoritism shown toward this movie...
JDUKE25 - 2/24/2013, 9:14 PM
Good for Ben.

So happy for Anne.

Good for Jenny Lawrence (awesome faceplant btw)

And I'm glad Lincoln didn't get the big one.
BIGBMH - 2/24/2013, 9:14 PM
Didn't see Brave or Wreck-it Ralph, but the critical consensus seemed to be that Wreck-it Ralph was a better movie. It seemed more interesting and original, IMO. Kind of surprised to see Brave take the top spot.
jordomac - 2/24/2013, 9:15 PM
I'll admit that Argo deserved best editing. They edited out the whole part about how it was 90% organized by Canadians
MatchesMalone1989 - 2/24/2013, 9:17 PM
@word. Not favortism Jus no respect for children comic books. As much as I like Dc over Marvel. The visuals in Avengers especially Hulk tearing up the ship and the last battle had some of the best effects ever. They should have got that one.
ahhmynuts - 2/24/2013, 9:18 PM
im going to have awesome fantasies of jennifer lawrence doing dirty things with that trophy...
MatchesMalone1989 - 2/24/2013, 9:19 PM
Brave wins because Disney, Disney, Disney!
BrotherStarkofMABMindz - 2/24/2013, 9:20 PM
Quvenzhane Wallis should have won that award. I swear I do not understand this obsession with Jennifer Lawrence, she robbed Quvenzhane of that oscar.

Set Mcfarlane was awesome though Ricky Gervais-esque
Silentman - 2/24/2013, 9:20 PM
Argo was mediocre and didn't deserve it but I'm happy Tarantino won screenplay and I gotta give the Academy props for thinking outside the box and giving the Best Director Oscar to Ang Lee, even though I thought Benh Zeitlin and Steven Spielberg did better jobs but Life of Pi was very good and looked gorgeous
Mrcool210 - 2/24/2013, 9:20 PM
all they recreated in life of pi was a tiger, they recreated a giant green man and all of new york in avengers, avengers should have won
MatchesMalone1989 - 2/24/2013, 9:21 PM
Ah yes the Mel Gibson N word Joke was Great!
BlazinTexan - 2/24/2013, 9:21 PM
avengers is great but LIFE OF PI was the most impressive visuals this year
Kamdan - 2/24/2013, 9:23 PM
In regard to Hathaway winning.

xXkryptoniteXx - 2/24/2013, 9:24 PM
Oscar is a joke.
BlazinTexan - 2/24/2013, 9:24 PM
lol Mrcool210 they created fish ,meerkats the [frick]ing ocean a badass tiger sharks whales a whole island etc
EdgyOutsider - 2/24/2013, 9:24 PM
Argo is over rated. Ben Affleck's The Town should have won the academy award a couple years back. Life of Pi is also good but over rated. Spielberg and Licoln got snubbed for best picture and best director. Glad Daniel Day-Lewis at least won but that one was a given.
CyberInflames - 2/24/2013, 9:24 PM
Some of you guys haven't actually watched Life Of Pi to say it didn't deserved best visual effects. It was way above Avengers, as much as I liked the movie. Its most serious competitor was Prometheus. The three others, Avengers, Hobbit, Snow White, didn't stand a chance to say the truth.
Kayo - 2/24/2013, 9:24 PM
wait, i thought Prometheus had a great visuals.
BlazinTexan - 2/24/2013, 9:25 PM
don't gotta be a comic book homer all the time
mk - 2/24/2013, 9:26 PM
lol.. no nominations for ben affleck for best director.. pretty bad.. and uhh anne hathaway for best supporting... naaah sally fields but yes life of pi did deserve visual effects
MatchesMalone1989 - 2/24/2013, 9:29 PM
I think the Shield Helicarrier compares to the life of pi's island. Plus the aliens also compare to the whales sharks and fish. Both good effects on both films. I jus think the Avengers effects were better because of the things they created. When fictional things look good on screen in my opinion it will always beat things that exist.
mawilli4 - 2/24/2013, 9:31 PM
for anyone bitching about Life of Pi for best special effects, watch the damn movie. It is hands down the most gorgeous movie I've ever seen. The tiger wasn't the only thing.. just watch it.
DanteSparda - 2/24/2013, 9:32 PM
Congratulations to Catwoman and Mystic, and better look next year Wolvie.

So much agreement.

Had to post that again. Someone wants to start a scuffle.

after everything i heard about zero dark thirty im surprised chastain didnt get best actress. now i gotta watch that and argo
95 - 2/24/2013, 9:43 PM
I guessed 15 out of 24 correct, which is 62% correct, or a D–. A lot of surprises, but overall, every film nominated looks good. I've seen a few. Right now, I'm popping in Flight into my Blu-ray player, first time watching it. Colorful group this year, one of my favorite Oscar shows. Seth was great. Here's to 2013 topping 2012.
CaptainPresley - 2/24/2013, 9:44 PM
Best part of the show was seeing Bill Shatner as Capt. Kirk!
Asterisk - 2/24/2013, 9:44 PM
Oh, Tarantino won Screenplay and Waltz Supporting Actor? That's all I needed to know, thanks.
TheOneAboveAll - 2/24/2013, 9:45 PM
I guessed them all correct
95 - 2/24/2013, 9:49 PM
Concerning VFX: I watched an interview with an Academy member who explained that they select a film that used VFX, the best, to tell their story. From the looks of it, Life Of Pi is indeed that film. It was my guess, too. It's exactly about groundbreaking VFX developments, but rather how much VFX affected the story and how much it needed it. The Avengers is largely a practical story. Joss Whedon tells a great character story, the heavily-VFX climax is merely the icing on top.

How did The Hobbit not win the Oscar for Makeup and Hairstyling
JDUKE25 - 2/24/2013, 9:55 PM
I loved Hugh running over to Jen to help her up. The dude is awesome.
TheSuperguy - 2/24/2013, 9:56 PM
As for animated films, couldn't care less about BRAVE. Was actually interested in WRECK-IT RALPH. Might have to check it out soon...
thewonderer - 2/24/2013, 9:59 PM
Leo Dicaprio shouldve [frick]ing been nominated and should've won over waltz.
[frick] you oscars

Although Argo was awesome, and zero dark thirty is beyond overrated
