The Tao of the Grif

The Tao of the Grif

CorndogBurglar explains Grif

Whether you are a longtime user of this site, or just started your membership today, there is not a single person on this site who does not know about Grif. Grif has been on this site longer than most. When I started my membership over 2 years ago, Grif was here. In fact, I think he was here before Galactus even created the site. He was sitting here trying to impose his mostly negative opinions onto this empty domain page. From time immemorial, he was here. My point? Grif is family to other long time users like myself. He's like that grumpy relative that everyone has, that kind of sticks out from the rest of the family. Sure he doesn't usually talk to anyone, but since when has that been a requirement of posting messages on community boards? Here, or on any site? He does nothing wrong. He comes into articles, states his opinion, regardless of how negative it is, and then he leaves. Where is the crime? He's certainly not a troll...

The definition of a Troll:

In Internet slang, a troll is someone who posts inflammatory[citation needed], extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum, chat room, or blog, with the primary intent of provoking readers into an emotional response[2] or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion.[3] The noun troll may refer to the provocative message itself, as in: "That was an excellent troll you posted". While the word troll and its associated verb trolling are associated with Internet discourse, media attention in recent years has made such labels subjective, with trolling describing intentionally provocative actions outside of an online context. For example, mass media uses troll to describe "a person who defaces Internet tribute sites with the aim of causing grief to families."[4][5]

Now, after reading that, does Grif really sound like a troll? Does he post off-topic messages? Nope. Is his intent to provoke readers into an emotional response? No, sir. He never insults anyone, and there have been times, admittedly few and far between, where Grif has actually posted positive comments. So he certainly isn't just trying to get a rise out of people. Is the primary intent of his posts to disrupt normal on-topic discussions? Nope, because again, all his comments are on-topic.

So basically, people need to lighten up and take a long look at what they're doing when they attack Grif in articles. Is he really so bad? Before you jump on Grif next time, or anyone really, ask yourself these questions. Which is worse? Grif's negativity, that really isn't hurting anyone? Or the fact that you just can't stand to see someone post a differing opinion than yours, so you feel the need to attack? Really, which is worse?

great article,a tribute to a legend one of the many characters on this site.

it makes you think that the troll hall of shame chart should be thought out again.

@ teabag

Nice article.
YuJaYu1 - 7/14/2011, 12:12 PM
Who cares? Grif is a waste of an editorial (if that's possible).
Checkmate - 7/14/2011, 12:17 PM
I love Grif and I agree with a lot of his opinions.
superotherside - 7/14/2011, 12:50 PM
lol... he and I don't agree all the time but I do agree with him about the Amazing Sony-man oh I mean Spider-man...
YuJaYu1 - 7/14/2011, 4:19 PM
@HailtotheKingBaby I really don't care about Grif, it's just every article he comments on is just calling the movie and/or show shit. So I really could care less, but this editorial is just stupid. And in fact, I haven't been here long, but I have read this site for at least 2 years, so I don't care about "popularity".
OdinsBeard - 7/14/2011, 4:48 PM
as long as this site is up Grif will be negative, CBD will be droppin' knowledge, and teabag will be posting boobs.

Minato - 7/14/2011, 4:51 PM
You didnt have to read this article and to go as far as comment.
Ive been reading this site since about 6 months before TDK came out and never had a problem with Grif. Its Gusto thats the Enigma to me.

"In fact, I think he was here before Galactus even created the site. He was sitting here trying to impose his mostly negative opinions onto this empty domain page"

Now that is classic.
YuJaYu1 - 7/14/2011, 6:11 PM
@Hush2010 Who's Gusto?
@OdinsBeard That's funny, man.
CorndogBurglar - 7/15/2011, 5:10 AM
@ YuJaYu

Its a terrible article that you don't stop coming into it. this isn't rocket science here. I can't stand people that complain about articles on this site. They actually take the time to not only click on the article, but then read it, and post on it. If you really don't like any given article, then its a whole lot easier to NOT click on it and post on it, right?

anyway, this was just supposed to be a funny little article. even though it does talk about people that attack other users for having different opinions. it happens too much.

to recap, if you don't like something DON'T CLICK IT! If you do, then the only person you can complain about is yourself. You wouldn't eat food you don't like, would you? exactly.
CorndogBurglar - 7/15/2011, 5:11 AM
@ everyone else

lol, thanks for all the good comments and for understanding where this is really coming from, unlike others that seem to take life a little too seriously :)
CorndogBurglar - 7/15/2011, 5:13 AM
and oh yeah, i'm actually kind of disappointed that Grif didn't come in here and say, "This article is shit!"
CorndogBurglar - 7/15/2011, 5:19 AM
@ Odinsbeard

BY ODIN'S CRUSTY EYE HOLE! where have you been, man? it seems like forever since i've seen you around here. :)
ElBicho - 7/15/2011, 8:57 AM
@CDB, Grif will think this article is sh!t.

In a good way...
OdinsBeard - 7/15/2011, 10:03 AM
CDB@ oh im still here everyday brother. several months ago i quit my job and moved to a different state. the job in which i wasted many, many, many work hours on this site hanging out with you guys. didn't really have time to comment a lot on all my usual places anymore. but im getting back into the swing of things now and my CBM fever is burning hot! 2012 is going to be great!

like i said i been here everyday still, gotta keep up with things, and trust me i read comments and i have certain people i look out for!

CorndogBurglar - 7/15/2011, 11:19 AM

comicbookjerk - 7/16/2011, 7:48 AM
Why did I even Click This?
TheMyth - 7/16/2011, 12:33 PM
Grif is a round table member. Plus, you can always spot the poozers by the ones who lash out at him.

Yum... love me some under-boob.
Jefferys - 7/16/2011, 2:58 PM
Brillant article.

The only shame about Grif is his posts all contain the same 'Man vs Shit', has anyone thought about pointing them to other 'Man vs Shit' videos or something as- I have no Idea how to describe it.
Caedus137 - 7/18/2011, 2:08 AM
I think the issue some people have with Grif is that you just cant argue with him!!! He'll post something negative then disappear, leaving you no opportunity for discussion or debate...
But hey... It's all a bit of fun...
