Tilda Swinton On Her Role As 'Minister Mason' In SNOWPIERCER

The actress, known for her roles in The Chronicles of Narnia and Constantine, recently held an interview with the guys over at Collider to discuss her next film Snowpiercer which is adapted from the french graphic novel "Le Transperceneige".

On the invention of her character 'Minister Mason':
Well, this was really good fun. I knew director Bong, and he told me about Snowpiercer. And then, when I read it, I said, “There is no one. There is Octavia Spencer and the woman with the yellow dress, and there is nobody else.” He said, “Yeah, it’s true. Let’s think about something in the future.” And then, a few weeks later, he wrote to me and said, “You see Minister Mason, who is described as a mild-mannered man in a suit?” And it is still described that way. We never updated it. He said, “What do you reckon?” And so, I thought, “Okay, how much fun can I have with it?” And he basically said, “Try me.” So, we just built up a clown. I wanted to make a clown out of this politician who is this really sinister, corrupt individual. Apart from the fact that I think there are so many wonderfully corrupt clowns in cinema, from Dr Strangelove to The Great Dictator, in life, you switch on the news and there will be someone posturing and making an idiot of themselves. People vote them in because they want a soap opera. So, that was really the key. We tried to push it as far as we could.

On how much freedom the actress had when portraying the character:
It is very interesting to try to analyze how director Bong and I were able to work together, because it feels as if we made every decision together, from the very beginning, when we first met. We became friends instantly, and we knew we wanted to work together. And then, when we decided to try to make something out of Minister Mason, which was director Bong’s idea, it was a challenge. He put down a glove and we dared each other. I had these fantasies of this clown, which was originally based on one photograph that we found of a museum lady who was a real person from my childhood. And then, we kind mixed in all of the crazy clown megalomaniac cowards that the news channels show us, every day. We just kept throwing in elements.

This film was brilliant and Tilda's character was horrific inside and out, so good job to her.

Huh, funny... Watched this about 2 hours ago. Really good film. Little quirky, kind of... disappointing in certain aspects but it surprised me in others. Chris Evans carried this film very well. His conversation to the Asian druggie was some of the best acting I've seen in a long time. Movies like this and Puncture really show you how much range the dude's got. He's one of my favs.

[frick]ing amazing movie, I haven't enjoyed a film this much in a long time.

Swinton is my pick for (male) The Joker, too!
Humperdink - 6/23/2014, 2:31 PM
She was great.
When she took them teeth out I was like 'WTF'?!

It's a good film, even if it sort of falls apart in some areas it's worth watching.

they need to leave the actor from the end off the movie posters, kinda a spoiler. but he's just taking china's child labor to the next stage, gotta keep that train a rollin'

Tilda Swinton is just a brilliant actress!... love her work in this movie!
Oh and Chris Evans! Just as brilliant!!!... can't wait to see him die in Captain America 3: The Death Of Captain America! (I bet this is the storyline the final film in that trilogy)

GREAT film.!!!

.DEFINITELY recommend.

- kinda weird surreal kaleidoscopic "visuals" taking place outside the train;
..but, imo, given the "orgins" of the script (i.e. where the film "came from") and the type of film that this is -- it ends up working out GREAT.

- Lovers LOVE it (including myself); those who don't like it are anywhere from luke-warm to cold about it;; - but me..? - GO SEE THIS if ever you can!!

*p.s. Evans' BEST film TO DATE! - ..By FAR!!

I would say this is her best role since orlando
yes the last couple of minutes are shite, but this is a very good movie up until then and if you just give it a pass at the end you will have seen a very good visual political movie about the way we live now.
