EDITORIAL: The 5 Best CB Cartoons Of My Childhood

Being a child of the 80's and 90's had its perks: the Reagan Administration, Indiana Jones movies, Kelly LeBrock, and so many great cartoons! Take a look at 5 of my favorites.

Yes, my parents let me watch a lot of TV as a kid.  And it made me into the awesome Man I am today!

There are so many great Cartoons from my childhood to choose from, but here are 5 of my favorites:

He-Man and the Masters of the Universe: (1983-85)

Nearest and dearest to my heart- I grew up loving this cartoon. Granted, it all started as a ploy to sell toys, but it has developed into a cult classic that has produced Comics, multiple toy lines, Clothing, lunch boxes, magazines, and a Movie.  I did my best as a kid to own it all, too.  I even have my old original toys in a box around my house somewhere.  The lingering popularity even produced a re-boot in 2002.  It was good, but short lived.

He-Man, Man at Arms, Skeletor, Teela and even Orco were all fun characters.  Many times it was He-Man cleaning up messes started by Orco or some other characters, but I could not wait to tune into this show.

Now, 30 years later, I play the DVDs for my nephews and kids.  It has aged well, and is still popular enough to produce talk of another movie, even though it seems to never get off the ground.

Batman: The Animated Series:  (1992-95)

Dark, serious and a damn great series.  Influenced from the Burton/Keaton Batman movies, I love this cartoon.  I always enjoyed the episodes with Robin a little bit more, and I loved the updated Robin costume.  Due to the popularity of this show, Superman: TAS, Justice League, and Justice League Unlimited were created in the following years.

The Batman animated universe was so cool, I also purchased a lot of tie-in stuff like paperback books and video games.  Some where decent, some were not.

X-Men: (1992-1997)

This was an awesome cartoon and a huge reason why the X-Men are my favorite Marvel property!  Very faithful to comic book tales and very serious in story telling.  Story lines dealt with racism, hate, and many other social issues.  Characters were great and loyal to their comic book origins.

This show introduced me to Gambit, the smooth talking, card throwing Badass!  Along with Wolverine, he was my favorite character.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: (1987-1996)

Hard to find a kid that didn't love this cartoon.  This show was much more humorous than the comics, and was the first to give each turtle their own colored mask.

This show is probably the reason there have been several movies and several more television shows (both live action and animated).  Again, I had to have the toys to go along with the series.  And I mostly enjoyed the movies...at the time.

The Super Friends: (1973-1986)

Being a younger kid when I watched this, it was goofy and fun.  This cartoon firmly planted me as a life-long DC fan.  The quality of some episodes were poor, but I didn't care.  I remember many times watching Batmans symbol on his chest change colors.  Kinda funny.

But a great cartoon for the younger kids, and it is a Classic today.

So there you go guys, above are some of the best (and my favorite) Cartoons from the 1980s and early 90's in my humble opinion.

Honorable mentions go to: Thundercats, GI Joe, and Spiderman & His Amazing Friends.

I had a Batman: TAS paperback novel, come to think of it. I seem to recall it being at least decent. That show was huge for me.

I have to admit, I like the Seahawks as well. My family is from there, so I have to cheer for them, too.
HankPymp - 7/2/2014, 3:16 PM
Great list. I remember the Hulk cartoon of the 90's being really good as well.
My all time favorite is the Spider - Man animated series.
I still put Christopher Daniel Barne's voice to every Spidey comic to this day.
He's up there with Kevin Conroy, and Mark Hamill as far as likability, and bringing an extra level of gravitas, IMHO.

good on ya for the list!
TexasTwoFace - 7/2/2014, 3:47 PM
That would be my top five list exactly except I'd switch out Super Friends for the 90's Spider-man with honorable mentions of Muppet Babies and The Real Ghostbusters.
InBrightestDay1 - 7/2/2014, 4:34 PM
These were my favorites as a kid.
Original Thundercats

He-Man

Silverhawks

Bravestarr

Real Ghostbusters

Tigersharks

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Batman: The Animated Series

X-Men
CorndogBurglar - 7/2/2014, 5:00 PM
I kind of have these split into different age groups.

I've got my cartoons I watched when I was little kid, like 3-9 years old. Those were:

1. He-Man

2. Transformers

3. GI Joe

4. Thundercats

5. Voltron

6. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Then I had the cartoons I watched from when I was 10 and up.

1. Batman: The Animated Series

2. X-Men

3. Spider-Man

4. Ren and Stimpy

5. Beavis and Butthead

Man they don't make cartoons like they used to.
NovaCorpsFan - 7/2/2014, 5:06 PM
I used to get video hand me downs from my cousin's of shows they watched as kids. I was born in 97 and grew up watching Thundercats, Masters of the Universe, Mighty morphin' Power Rangers and TMNT. Then Fox kids introduced me to all the Marvel Animated Series. X-Men was my favourite. I remember also watching a show (live action) called Big Wolf On Campus. It was about a guy at college who was a were-wolf and he fought demons and shit. Never missed an episode of that. Then I started watching JLA and Teen Titans while all the other kids were watching Yu-Gi-Oh (shit as far as I'm concerned). But yeah, I've always been a bit behind in terms of CB related shows. Even now, I only started watching Arrow three days ago.
NovaCorpsFan - 7/2/2014, 5:14 PM
If I had to pick a favourite out of all the cartoons of my childhood, I'd have to say Sonic The Hedgehog (Yeah, hand-me-down video. I also got a few Ghostbusters ones too, now that I think of it). I dunno why I loved Sonic so much, but I think it had something to do with the world it was all set in. Everything was just TOTALLY bonkers and I loved it. I loved Sonic X as well, man, that show wasmy pre-teens.
H3LLBLAZER - 7/2/2014, 6:29 PM
These are the Top 5 cartoon shows of my childhood.

Robicon - 7/3/2014, 4:51 AM
Am I dating myself if I bring up Dungeons and Dragons, Galaxy Rangers and Robotech?
Archangel82 - 7/3/2014, 4:56 AM
The old plasticman cartoon was awesome!
MrReese - 7/3/2014, 5:24 AM
Batman TAS
Spider-Man TAS
X-Men TAS
Static Shock
Batman Beyond
Enki - 7/3/2014, 8:46 AM
My Top 5 cartoons during the 80s:

-Mazinger Z

-Macross (Robotech)

-Gatchaman (Battle of the Planets)

-Go Lion (Voltron)

-Transformers
Wolf38 - 7/3/2014, 9:11 AM
I only watched some of Robotech/Macross a couple of years ago for the first time. It's pretty cool, nicely serious in a way that many animated shows aren't.
SCURVYDOG619 - 7/3/2014, 9:44 AM
Space Ghost:

The most OVERPROTECTIVE hero ever: Kidnap Jan or Jayce, and he'd destroy your planet....

Captain Harlock:

Space pirates.'Nuff said.

Star Blazers:

Sure,it was a heavily censored ,but in the '70's it was the most VIOLENT show on TV...

Speed Racer:

Great for its time, but some of the grunting Speed's American voice actor does in certain episodes veers toward porn territory...lol

Danger Mouse:

"Penfold.......SHUSH!"

Batman:The Animated Series:

Go watch "Heart Of Ice". THAT episode is why Bruce Timm and Paul Dini should be running all things DC Cinematic....
