Editorial: Why I like Comic Book Movies & What They Mean To Me

In this day and age... We have been blessed by the Comic Gods and hence he has given us CBM's. Here are some of the reasons I believe we as fans should appreciate that and be grateful that we're even seeing our childhood heroes come to life.

Part 1: The Bug That Bit Me
I remember when I was a young kid. I was introduced by one of my best friends to the Fleer Ultra X-Men Trading Cards. Even being that young (I was around 7 years old), I was blown away by the realism on those cards. I had no idea what this universe was all about and where or why all these characters existed, I just knew I was interested... border-lined obsessed. This was the key moment that got me into comics. From there, I practically lived at the comic shop. Played X-Men Overpower The Card Game with the owner and his wife. Was introduced to DC Comics. This was around the time that The Doomsday/Death Of Superman series was just getting underway. I was swept away in the flood with the whole phenomenon that from that day on, comics were in my life to stay.

Part 2: When Dreams Came True
As time went on and I got older my understanding for comics grew. I was into so many different series... Superman, X-Men, Green Lantern, Spider-Man.. and even as obscure as Wildcats and Spawn. The cartoon started rolling in at this point. We had X-Men, Spider-Man, Batman The Animated Series, Iron Man, Hulk, & The Fantastic 4. I remember me and my friends always wished they would make movies for all these characters. We would say stuff like "How cool would it be to see Superman shoot Brainiac with his lasers in a movie?" I remember Wizard Magazine (RIP) always doing Fan Casts where they would cast their dream actors in their respective parts. I remember them casting Patrick Stewart as Professor X when I was 9 years old. To us, being able to see what our heroes would look like in the real world instead of on paper was the most amazing concept ever. Then my parents surprised me with a VHS copy of Batman 1989. It blew me away. It was Batman in real life. Moving, talking, driving the Batmobile, fighting The Joker. It was the greatest thing I had ever seen. Time passed and of course I discovered the Christoper Reeves Superman films, The Batman sequels, The Bill Bixby Incredible Hulk, I just couldn't get enough. I was seeing my childhood on my television screen as if I could walk outside and see it that way. It was real.

Part 3: Compromise
I really feel that as fans, we should be extremely grateful that we are even getting the chance to see our childhood's come to life on the silver screen. It's a privilege that we're seeing The Avengers assemble on screen. It's amazing that we finally got to see Bane break Batman on screen. I feel people are either getting a little spoiled or are just really attached to their favorite characters and want justice done to them. I see both sides and agree with points on both but there has to be a place where we can compromise and be satisfied on either end. Like the DC vs Marvel thing... WHO CARES? Both have great characters and both have some pretty bad ones. Why hate on either one? Both are great in their own ways. Look at it like this. Next year, we have Iron Man 3, The Wolverine and my most anticipated The Man Of Steel. All 3, great characters and legends in the comic book world. We're going to see The Winter Solider! We're going to see Silver Samurai! WE'RE GOING TO SEE SUPERMAN THROW SOME PUNCHES! My childhood is coming to life all over again. Maybe we are getting spoiled but oh well. I fully embrace my inner nerd. Keep the movies coming. Hit or miss I enjoy them all as a fan as we all should. Thanks true believers!!

This was a refreshing read. For a while i gave up reading editorials on this site but this editorial was nice, nice paragraphs, nice pictures, captivating enthusiasm for the little things that we fanboys sometimes take for granted =D

I like this editorial.

Great write up dude, as it has been said in post before mine it's nice to see something that is not the usual bullshit we have been getting lately.

Haha yeah Thor 2 was forgotten in that paragraph but that's ok, because you (batz11) and I remember it.

Actually I'm hopin' The Wolverine pulls it off as much as MOS. They have the best material to pull from.

But yeah, M3T4LLO, hit it right on the nail with Part 3: Compromise.

This made me smile. I remember discovered comics at a Citgo station by my summer house. They would sell 3 packs. Each would 1 Marvel, 1 DC, and the third would be from Image, Dark Horse, or Valiant. My mom also got for my birthday a big book called Marvel: Five Fabulous Decades of the World's Greatest Comics. Shortly after that, I began subscribing and buying comics wherever and whenever I could, and never looked back after that.

This article reminds me of the good ol' days. Comics were my life back then. All I could think about was seeing my favorite characters on screen, be it small or big. I feel especially lucky to have a good version of The Avengers and Batman on the big screen finally.
Here's to the next films and the magic they may bring to our lives. Yes, it's a good time to be a nerd!
