Punisher Films: What Should Happen

Punisher Films: What Should Happen

I was watching movies earlier today and noticed something, the only good Punisher movie didn't have any studios attached.

I'm a huge fan of The Punisher, and don't let the teaser fool you I can find enjoyment in each one of his movies, though I do recognize the flaws in each one. The problems with the Dolph Lundgren one was it being so unfaithful and dull. The ones with the Jane one I feel are limited not to say they are non existent but I enjoy this one much more than the following. Oh here we go the Ray Stevenson one was just a brutal gore fest with no substance what so ever. I do realize some people like War Zone and I have no problem I say live and let live.

I also started watching punisher fan films and liked them far more than the movies. Recently Thomas Jane made a Punisher fanfilm that was awesome. Everything about it was great, except for the guy who played the thug he was way too over the top, any way my point is Studios had no say in this what so ever that's probably what made it great. Another reason why it might have been great was that it was short. The Punisher is not the type of character that can flesh out an entire movie, that was proven in the past.

Now that the rights are with Marvel they are going to do a Punisher film soon. I hope this doesn't happen, I think that they should do a series of One Shot's like they did on the Thor DVD with Agent Coulson. They could play them in front of the movies at the theartre and then release them with the DVD. This way it'll be possible to include him in team up movies like if they do the Civil War story line.

Wow I really thought I had more to say on this, anyway there's my thoughts. Let me know what you think.

I would really like to read some Punisher but i don't know where to start. I thought about starting with Punisher MAX by Garth Ennis.

Any recomendations?

The Punisher MAX series is a GREAT READ! I picked up one of the graphic novels once purely based off the Tim Bradstreet cover art, and next thing I knew I had read every single one. It's very graphic though; the first and only time a comic book frame has made me cringe.. But it's a very good take on The Punisher: It keeps with the backstory of Castle being a Vietnam Vet, and he's been dishing out "punishment" for so long that it's completely engulfed him and he's barely even a person any more.

After you read some of the Punisher MAX stories, you'll wish they use Garth Ennis' take for a movie, or a "made for cable" mini series.

For a Punisher movie to be good, it needs to go deep. It needs to be more of a Frank Castle movie rather than a Punisher movie. From childhood, to joining the marines (him being in the marines should be the most important part of the movie, because thats how he became who he is. A lot of important stuff going on there.),show the situation of The Costa Family, why there killing Forest Hunt? Billy Russo (Jigsaw) didn't kill Frank's family, but he was hired by the Frank Costa (Leader of the Costa Family) to kill Frank when he found out he was alive. I think you need to go deep into his story (and not made up stuff) for a Punisher movie to be good.

Welcome Back Frank is a good story, but not a good story starting the Punisher franchise.

I don't think Frank Castle/Punisher works as a film because it was too shallow of a story when it began and too deep for the non-comics audience on Garth Ennis' end. The reason no film has been able to do it justice is because the original story was just a sort of action movie with a basic revenge plot. Ennis brought much needed psychological depth to it. What it needs is a 6-season-and-a-movie treatment with it being a made-for-cable series as CaptainTumeria suggested. That way, it can maintain its violence and build on character in a way that the non-comic book reading audience can grasp. Think Starz' "Spartacus" violence/gore/action meets "Dexter" psychology.

I think its best to mix the movie with old Punisher story with the MAX story and show how he got those skills from the marines, to let non-comic audience know who Frank Castle is and to make it not just an revenge movie. The marines is when he started his transformation, because when he was a teen, he wanted to be a preist, but that all changed when he see a lot of crime and decided to join the marines. That would be an awesome movie to me.
