BOX OFFICE: RED 2 And R.I.P.D. Become 2013's Latest Big Budget Box Office Flops

BOX OFFICE: RED 2 And R.I.P.D. Become 2013's Latest Big Budget Box Office Flops

Surprised? No, neither are we. Both Red 2 and R.I.P.D. opened at the North American box office this weekend, and both have been major disappointments for their respective studios. Does this mark the end of any future non-Marvel/DC superhero movies? Read on for details.

Thanks to our friends over at @ERCboxoffice, we have some updates for this weekend at the North American box office. As you can see, both Red 2 and R.I.P.D. have not opened well (although the latter has done significantly worse than the Red sequel), while The Lone Ranger and Pacific Rim are also proving to be two more big budget let downs. Of course, they make their numbers up internationally, but things aren't looking great for the other two. One can't help but wonder whether the underperformance of movies like these will result in studios being less willing to take chances on comic book properties which aren't mainstream superheroes. Even adaptations of Mark Millar's well-known properties such as Nemesis and Supercrooks seem to have come to a halt!

Was it really that much of a surprise?
Ramiel - 7/21/2013, 10:31 AM
Conjuring #1, baby!
Brainiac13 - 7/21/2013, 10:36 AM
Its sad.......really is......hey its not my money! I'm happy now!

KingLeonidas - 7/21/2013, 10:39 AM
Ryan Reynolds should do us a favor and stop making movies.
Luminus - 7/21/2013, 10:40 AM
Ouch. Ryan Renolds is box office poison. Name one good film he's in. One.
thespiderkat - 7/21/2013, 10:44 AM
for a dreamworks movie, turbo is doing really bad. it seems even ryan reynold's voice is box office poison.
Fornication - 7/21/2013, 10:45 AM
A sequel to a bad movie and a Ryan Reynolds movie. What were you expecting?
halvor311 - 7/21/2013, 10:47 AM
Good movies with Reynolds: The Proposal, The Change-Up, Buried, and Safe House. He's not the poison, it's the writing/directing

Spielberg warns of two-tier pricing structure for movies with tickets for blockbusters rising to $25 while other films cost $7

The legendary film director predicts that consumers will soon be asked to pay different prices depending on the type of movie they go to see

With prices for summer blockbusters and event movies rising sharply

He said it is inevitable that a series of multi-million blockbusters will flop and radically change how the industry works

He also revealed that 'Lincoln' came 'this close' to being a HBO premier rather than a cinema release

So basically CBM dominated the summer and has been for a while now.
ABLEE337 - 7/21/2013, 10:48 AM
@ Luminus

I liked "Just Friends" and thought "Waiting..." was OK.
Indestruktible - 7/21/2013, 10:49 AM
There was absolutely no marketing for Turbo, Red 2 or RIPD. No wonder it flops. And Lone Ranger was just bad, so of course that flops too despite the massive marketing (but bad word of mouth).
pud333 - 7/21/2013, 10:49 AM
If there is ever a JL movie, they should recast Hal Jordan. No way do I want Reynolds anywhere near another DC property. And for all those clamouring for him to be Deadpool, I would think again. He is box office poison. He will sink Deadpool. There are plenty of other actors who could pull that character off.
SeaSerpentine - 7/21/2013, 10:52 AM
I really want to see "Pacific Rim", but it's unknown if the film will play at the theater near me and I don't feel like taking another 18-mile bike ride to the next closest theater like I did with "Man of Steel".
ComicFan1134 - 7/21/2013, 10:52 AM
They Actually Expected R.I.P.D. To Do Good? BWHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
jazzman - 7/21/2013, 10:56 AM

RED 2 was not produce by WB and Newline it was done by Summit Entertainment

the changed-up sucked it failed also.
alecwright - 7/21/2013, 10:56 AM
@halvor311: "Good movies with Reynolds: The Proposal, The Change-Up, Buried, and Safe House. He's not the poison, it's the writing/directing"

Then maybe he should pick better scripts.

And lol@ The Change Up, Buried, and The Proposal. Have you even seen any of those movies?

And another lol at trying to give Reynolds any credit for Safe House. That was all Denzel.
DoctorDoak - 7/21/2013, 10:56 AM
@Luminus: He's been in several good films, especially Adventureland, Paperman, Chaos Theory, and one of my favorite movies of all time: Buried. I also liked Waiting and The Nines as well.
Crescendo - 7/21/2013, 10:57 AM
*plays taps for the films mentioned*

*cries manly tears for Pacific Rim*

datNAMEtho - 7/21/2013, 10:57 AM
It looked pretty bad from the get go.
knighted - 7/21/2013, 10:57 AM
RIPD had flop written all over it. Seemed too much like MIB but worse.
upsidownman - 7/21/2013, 10:57 AM
I predict Ryan's career will be delagate to TV sitcoms at this point. Poor bastard, he's the Christian Slater of the new millennia.
RPD - 7/21/2013, 10:59 AM
People are waiting for The Wolverine...
FOOM - 7/21/2013, 11:00 AM
I smell crap
alecwright - 7/21/2013, 11:01 AM
As for the bankability of non-Marvel & Dc films...It's all about star power. Swap out Taylor Kitch or Brad Pitt, and John Carter is a massive hit. Tom Cruise as Hal Jordan...Green Lantern opens huge. Henry Cavill was an unknown, but you put a genuine movie star like Russell Crow by his side and that makes a big difference. Also, it's freakin' SUPERMAN. That helped too.

Very rarely do we get a 300. A film with no stars that does big box office.
R888 - 7/21/2013, 11:01 AM
Sad for Pacific Rim :( movie was awesome as hell. It will don better in Japan.
Luminus - 7/21/2013, 11:02 AM
@DoctorDoak & ABLEE337: I saw Buried. It sucked. Horrible ending.

I see 2 people gave some examples of good movies he's been in. Did those movies do well at the box office, or are they good only because you like them?
SugarYumYum - 7/21/2013, 11:06 AM
Damn. This year has been brutal.

@Luminus: I liked The Proposal, Waiting, and Just Friends. Loved Buried. Heard "The Nines" was pretty good and the concept is interesting so that's on my list to check out.
BooYah - 7/21/2013, 11:06 AM
"Does this mark the end of any future non-Marvel/DC superhero movies?"

Well, there's always Kick Ass. Not really a 'super' hero though.
alecwright - 7/21/2013, 11:07 AM
@SlaveMasterFlexxx Nemesis will happen and do well if they cast movie stars for the two lead roles. Neeson & Cruise. Neeson & Pitt.

Yeah, Neeson must play Morrow.
alecwright - 7/21/2013, 11:08 AM
SugarYumYum is Blake Lively.
Swiftsword777 - 7/21/2013, 11:15 AM
Reynolds just makes bad decisions plain and simple
jazzman - 7/21/2013, 11:21 AM
someone should write an article about Ryan Reynolds starring in failed Comic book movies
DoctorDoak - 7/21/2013, 11:22 AM
@Luminus: "I see 2 people gave some examples of good movies he's been in. Did those movies do well at the box office, or are they good only because you like them?"

This implies you assume quality is equal to quantity -- as in ticket sales. You can't judge a movie based on its box office intake. There are too many well-reviewed great movies that bombed at the box office (such as Office Space), and too many critically-panned movies that do well (like the Twilight films).

And Buried needed to end that way, or it negates the point the film was trying to make. It was a commentary on bureaucracy -- there was no other way it could have ended. But you're entitled to your opinion all the same, and I respect that.
Omarvls - 7/21/2013, 11:34 AM
and I was hoping for a shared universe with
lone ranger and zorro
jazzman - 7/21/2013, 11:39 AM

it is hes fault we cant always blame the agent he can say NO to the role.
fanDomX - 7/21/2013, 11:45 AM
$ 178.5 mill world wide in two weeks for Pacific Rim.
mrkymrk702 - 7/21/2013, 12:14 PM
Only good ryan reynolds movie i liked was Van Wilder
ABLEE337 - 7/21/2013, 12:20 PM
@ Luminus

I never mentioned "Buried", cause I've never seen it.

By your logic, if box office gross determines whether a film is good or bad then you must think "Shawshank Redemption" is one of the most terrible movie ever made and many others that became successful after it's theatrical runs but found an audience on home video.

You asked "Are they any good because I like them"
I don't know, do all movie you hate suck just because you hate them????

I'm pretty sure I hate some movies you like.
alecwright - 7/21/2013, 12:23 PM
@ABLEE The whole point is that Reynolds has been in bomb after bomb. Stinker after stinker. These are commercial AND critical failures. That's the story of his career.

I haven't seen it, but I hear Adventure Land is good. It's generally considered his best. Although that's not saying much.

And Joseph Gordon Levitt for Deadpool! Seriously. I think he'd be perfect for the role.
