ALIENS Director James Cameron Shares His Opinion Of PROMETHEUS

ALIENS Director James Cameron Shares His Opinion Of PROMETHEUS

James Cameron, Director of 1986's Aliens, the follow-up to Ridley Scott's Alien (1979), chimes in with his own thoughts on Prometheus. Hit the jump to check it out.

Aliens is widely considered one of the best sequels in movie history. Cameron's follow-up to Scott's Alien, had a dramatic tonal change, ditching the scares for more action. And by no means is it all action all the time. The characters have such depth, the acting was pitch perfect, and it's just a downright pulse-pounding good time. Where as Scott's Alien, which is also a gem, was more a slow-burn thriller/horror film. As I like to say, Ridley gave birth to the Alien, but James Cameron really set the franchise in motion.

As someone who was connected to the "Alien" legacy, what did you think about "Prometheus"?

I enjoyed "Prometheus"; I thought it was great. I thought it was Ridley returning to science fiction with gusto, with great tactical performance, beautiful photography, great native 3D. There might have been a few things that I would have done differently, but that’s not the point, you could say that about any movie.

Did it make you feel like you wanted to revisit the world of "Alien" at all?

No. No, I feel that I’m too far away from it right now, too much other work has been done -- too thickly layered, a palimpsest of other talents from Fincher to everybody that’s come along since.

Do you enjoy watching other people’s movies?

Oh, yeah. I’m a huge movie fan. I love watching films. I love watching films with the family, with the kids; I love watching films myself. I was out there opening night [for] "Prometheus." I didn’t go to the Thursday midnight screening, but I was there Friday. I like to still get excited about movies and whether they pay off or not, that’s not the point -- the fact that there’s still an excitement around a new movie, about the an unveiling of a new movie.

So you’re able to enjoy movies as a viewer?

"Prometheus" is a film I saw twice, and I thought about it ahead of time. The first time I would just enjoy it, go for the ride, not be too analytical and the second time I would allow myself to be a little more analytical about, you know, where the lights were and how they lit the shots with all the people in the helmets, how they probably had to do CG faceplates like we did on "Avatar," things like that. But, sometimes, so that I preserve a fun, fan-like viewing experience, I won’t get into that level. I’ll just go for the ride, like, consciously.

Prometheus, directed by Ridley Scott and stars: Charlize Theron, Idris Elba, Logan Marshall-Green), Noomi Rapace, and Michael Fassbender. The film is directed by Ridley Scott, and is in theaters now!

One of the few things he's said recently that I applaud him on.
staypuffed - 9/12/2012, 2:39 PM
I thought Prometheus was great; but apparently it had many plot-holes and unanswered questions. I didn't think so, but it seems that many people thought it was disappointing.
OdinsBeard - 9/12/2012, 2:39 PM
wow one of Hollywood's most incredible dick heads manages to sound like a decent human being.
marvel72 - 9/12/2012, 2:41 PM
prometheus was a good film but not as good as alien or blade runner.
thewonderer - 9/12/2012, 2:41 PM
How come this website didn't report him sorta making fun of Avengers for not reaching his box office totals?

I thought it was hilarious
KaneVonDoom - 9/12/2012, 2:43 PM
Not much of a Cameron fan but he put this beautifully. Hopefully fanboys of any specific will take note.
KaneVonDoom - 9/12/2012, 2:44 PM
thewonderer: because it's too busy making up reasons why someone dissed Nolan.
Boogie138 - 9/12/2012, 2:48 PM
still don't like the man lol terminator 1 and 2 and aliens are the only movies i like from him.

and yes i watched avatar and no i did not like it
PapaEmeritus - 9/12/2012, 2:54 PM
Prometheus was a good film, has its qualities. The 3D was one of the best.
Killik13 - 9/12/2012, 2:56 PM
I really don't get why people are so negative about James Cameron. If they think he's solely to blame for the influx of 3D in the last few years, that's crazy. If anything, he dedicated a decade of his career into making it a more immersive, less gimmicky technology. The fact that a lot of studios decide to convert rather than film in 3D, making it less impressive is their fault, not his. And if you don't like his movies, so what? I know there are directors and actors I hate, but spouting crap whenever their name is mentioned is just overkill. Dude's a solid filmmaker with a very impressive history of work, and he's responsible for pushing a lot of technologies forward instead of just using them as gimmicks.

Cameron is becoming the nickelback of movie directors

TheGambitFreak - 9/12/2012, 3:00 PM
I came into this article thinking he was gonna rip Prometheus a new one talking about how it doesn't have a good story foundation and how it is so unoriginal so then I could bitch about him...

But considering he said something that's agreeable with myself, I will not go off on him for his thoughts on Prometheus, I'll just bitch...

Shit, I'm surprised that the line for Avatar wasn't "Two different Worlds. One true love."

I hate you, Cameron, you talentless hack! He took one of the best horror movies ever made and turned it into an Action Film (Alien). Sure Aliens was cool, but it just seemed like the TDK to it's BB. If you get what I mean.
PapaEmeritus - 9/12/2012, 3:00 PM
@Marvel72, Alien and Blade Runner are timeless classics, and guess what? Blade Runner was a flop, critically and commercially, at the time. But nowadays is considered a "cult". Ironic.

Prometheus wasn't meant to be a masterpiece or something, just a good science fiction.
Killik13 - 9/12/2012, 3:03 PM
Jesse, that's not the worst comparison actually. But while both are often hated mainly because they're just THEM, there's one massive difference. Whether you like James Cameron's films or not, he's made massive leaps in filming technology (Performance capture, underwater filming, and the obvious... immersive 3D). I can get people not liking someone's art, but with Cameron I'm baffled that people let that get in the way of his efforts to further the industry in terms of disrespecting the guy.
TheGambitFreak - 9/12/2012, 3:10 PM
Oh, one more...

Visually, Avatar was cool. But beyond that, I was begging for the film to end.
kingshnake - 9/12/2012, 3:12 PM
I personally can't wait for Avatar 2 and 3 remember watching Avatar for first time has to be up there with any cinematic experience. Cameron is a smart guy who takes film-making seriously

@nailbiter111 - abyss is how i'd like to see someone go about an aquaman movie. showing the dark scariness of the oceans

The difference between them is that at least James Cameron made the film HE wanted to make, and it makes the film better for it. It was 100% his passion behind that film, whereas Prometheus was a mishmash of Ridley Scott's original work, attempting to distance himself from Alien, and the studio's shoehorning in of Alienverse elements. It was a bad original story because of the awkward inclusions of Weyland and Xenomorphs, and the fact that those elements were so reluctantly placed and unnatural, it failed as a part of that universe. Not to mention the awful, AWFUL script.

Tl;dr Avatar wasn't the most original basic story, but at least it was coherent.
Both movies did look AMAZING though.
marvel72 - 9/12/2012, 3:25 PM
@ atastyburgar

that's a very good video it does sort of answer some of the questions.

i have one at when we see the xenomorph burst through the engineers chest it looks pretty much fully grown, but in all the other alien movies the chest burster is tiny but it does gain size as we progress through the film.

shouldn't it of been smaller in size.
GodzillaKart - 9/12/2012, 3:25 PM
"great tactical performance, beautiful photography, great native 3D. There might have been a few things that I would have done differently"

Like not use such a damn stupid script. He's right, all that stuff was five star. Even the tention and scares were great. It was just such a damn stupid script.

Scientifically ignorant film.

The best thing about prometheus was the visual beauty.

That alone gets my approval, but I loved the story too and the whole Alien mythos. Anything with a great unfolding universe is awesome to me. Just like the MCU.

James Cameron would have added a song by Celine Dion then it would have met his standards.
Killik13 - 9/12/2012, 3:29 PM
And hhere we have my thoughts exactly.
This, in my opinion, made it worse than just downright awful films, because SO MUCH was done right, and then all the beauty and tension was ruined by an incoherent story, terrible "science" and a clunky script.
PapaEmeritus - 9/12/2012, 3:30 PM
Cameron knows how to do his shit, but i've to say that i hate Avatar... the story is too cliche, childish even! And i never watched Titanic.
RunDTC - 9/12/2012, 3:34 PM
love Aliens and T2. fantastic films. The Abyss is pretty good. The first Terminator is decent but not nearly as good as the sequel. True Lies is alright, a good Saturday afternoon flick if it's on the tube. I hate Avatar. I hated it before it was cool to hate. haven't seen Titanic.
Azazel1 - 9/12/2012, 3:35 PM
Promethesus was an amazing film-awesome!

I think a lot of people who did not like the film were expecting something way different and really did not understand the philosophy of the film.

Great job Ridley, cannot wait to see the sequel...
optimusbibby - 9/12/2012, 3:35 PM
how old are people generally on here? im 23 and i find myself disagreeing with practically every comment i read. am i too young? how can people say they didn't see/like Avatar, on a f*****g comic book movie website? if your on here im sorry but you have to have seen avatar. it was such an amazing film. sure it was obvious and predictable, and "stole" loads of ideas from other materials but you cant tell me its not a good film! the graphics, the action, the music, everything. what do you people want????
GodzillaKart - 9/12/2012, 3:36 PM
I liked Avatar. Yes, it had a simplistic story, but great characters, and the simplistic story worked as a great metaphor for colonization. The action was great, the special effects were awesome, and the movie was touching.

Prometheus was dumb.
NostalgicYouth - 9/12/2012, 3:37 PM
Prometheus was a suspensful, intriguing, entertaining sci-fi movie scientifically ignorant, yes at times; but most science fiction films have to dumb down some things, to appeal to their viewers. I feel like Prometheus is going to be many peoples guilty pleasure because of all it supposed plot holes and dumb character's.
95 - 9/12/2012, 3:37 PM
True Lies!
GodzillaKart - 9/12/2012, 3:38 PM
@Killik13: Thank you! You are exactly right. Because everything else was great, and because it was tying itself to beloved classics, Prometheus wasn't just a shitty film, it was unforgivable.
Killik13 - 9/12/2012, 3:38 PM
Azazel1 - 9/12/2012, 3:39 PM
@Nailbiter-I know right? So much hate for Avatar. Okay, Avatar has some flaws, the script/story had some problems at points but overall the film was amazing! Visually it was ground breaking. Best 3d effects ever put on film.

I think people just like hating on success for some reason...
GodzillaKart - 9/12/2012, 3:40 PM
Again, I would argue that Prometheus is so science ignorant that it doesn't even rate as science fiction. More "creationist fiction", which is redundant.
Azazel1 - 9/12/2012, 3:41 PM
I think a lot of you people who are hating on Prometheus did not understand it...
Killik13 - 9/12/2012, 3:43 PM
Yeah, I wanted to love it, and if the story had been completely isolated in it's own universe, I probably would have. But it felt stuck on the fence between Original and Alien Zero, and that made it impossible to rate well overall for me. As I said, absolutely incredible visually. Definitely a contender for cinematography and visual effects Oscars.
OnLeatherWings - 9/12/2012, 3:44 PM
i really enjoyed prometheus. looking forward to the sequel.

cameron has made some of the most iconic films in the history of film making. hes a great director. however, though avatar made a shit load of money and was a good film. i just couldnt get into the story much. i feel the audience knew exactly what was gona happen scene for seen. it was a very played out story. still though. not a shit film. looked pretty though lol
