Asa Butterfield Confirmed to Play Ender Wiggin in Ender's Game

The Hugo actor confirmed via his twitter account that he has been booked to play the protagonist in the big screen adaption of Orson Scott Card's Hugo and Nebula Award winning novel.

Earlier this month Deadline reported that the 14 year old actor was being eyed by Summit Entertainment to play lead in the upcoming Ender's Game adaption. Butterfield confirmed via his twitter account earlier today that he will indeed be the face of Ender Wiggin in the film set for a March 15, 2013 theatrical release.

Set in Earth's future, the novel presents an imperiled humankind who have barely survived two conflicts with the Formics (an insectoid alien species also known as the "Buggers"). These aliens show an ant-like group behavior, and are very protective of their leader, much like Earth ants protecting their queen.

In preparation for an anticipated third invasion, an international fleet maintains a school to find and train future fleet commanders. The world's most talented children, including the novel's protagonist, Ender Wiggin, are taken at a very young age to a training center known as the Battle School. There, teachers train them in the arts of war through increasingly difficult games including ones undertaken in zero gravity in the Battle Room where Ender's tactical genius is revealed.

The book was okay; it's not really good in my opinion

It's Wiggin not Wiggins

@Rockstar96, I'm sorry you didn't like it. It's considered one of, if not the greatest, SciFi novels of all time. I personally can't wait to see it brought to life. I only wish they would do the other stories in the series as well, although there is virtually no chance, given how different they are from the first.

Not to mention that it looks like Kurtzman and Orci wrote the script. For me at least that is awesome news.

i read enders game at the beginning of this year, took me a while to get around to reading it cause i've been wanting to for years even before they announced they might be doing a movie. that being said the book was pretty damn good, i just don't know how exactly they are going to do it because in the book he eventually gets older up until the very end. that and theres also like 10 books now, i have 8 of them all together, havent read any of the other ones yet but will. seems like some of those books go back to when ender was a kid. its kind of confusing so im just a little concern on how they pull the movies off. and it needs to be graphical as well.
MissOracle - 11/29/2011, 3:32 PM
@Ender Yeah I caught it and fixed it. lol Just takes awhile for the changes to be made.
ender - 11/29/2011, 4:23 PM
Odie their are multiple series' within the Enderverse. The ones that your talking about from when he was a kid focus on a different Character during his Childhood. The other ones focus on Ender as an adult. However, the first books is fairly self contained. If the don't try to make a series out of the movies then the first one will work just fine. However, if they choose to continue I don't see how they can use the novels that focus on Ender as an adult. They are great stories, it's just that they are completely different types of stories. They are much more philosophical and almost more like Mystery novels.

Now if only we could get another director.
GodzillaKart - 11/29/2011, 6:09 PM
Truly great book. Hope the movie is as well.
ender - 11/29/2011, 6:10 PM
Yeah the director is a little iffy for me. But the writers are good and as long as OSC is pretty well involved it should turn out right.
GodzillaKart - 11/29/2011, 6:11 PM
@Shane2188: I agree! Ender's Shadow would be a great sequel, but they would almost have to film them at the same time.

I approve completely. He was amazing in The Boy in the Striped Pajamas.
l0rdleg0las - 11/29/2011, 10:23 PM
he's too old. he's too old even to play Peter at this point.

i have so much apprehension towards this movie and just think it is going to be turned into a kids franchise instead of the adult subject matter in the book.

i am betting so much of the book is going to be dropped and that by the time it is released it is Ender's Game in name only.
EarOne - 11/30/2011, 1:08 AM
not interested.
l0rdleg0las - 11/30/2011, 10:44 PM

i understand the point in making the character a little older or technically a lot older. however one of the greatest things about the book was the fact that these kids barely out of the womb were more intelligent than the adults around them and in many cases more brutal than any adults. that was part of what made the book so incredibly original. by upping the age, instead of getting a good adaptation of Ender's Game we get a Spy Kids in Space type of thing

by changing the age of Ender, you go from him being the brilliant little boy you root for even though he does some deplorable things to other kids, to potentially looking at him as an obnoxious dickhead teenager.
