Bill Pullman Offers An Update On INDEPENDENCE DAY 2

While chatting about his upcoming role as The President on the TV show 1600 Penn, actor Bill Pullman talked about the status of Independence Day 2, and said there is a contingency plan in case Will Smith decides not to do the film.

Bill Pullman is no stranger to playing the President of The United States. He is currently playing the role as the Commander and Chief in the new television series 1600 Penn, and he played one in the Summer blockbuster Independence Day. Rumors have been swirling for a long time now as to when or if we will get a sequel to the film that launched Will Smith to movie stardom. While speaking with CraveOnline Pullman gave this hopeful update on the film, "Within a year(They might start shooting), yeah, something like that I guess. I worried about taking this part because it’s heating up." He said that he talked to director Roland Emmerich and producer Dean Devlin about his schedule with 1600 Penn, and they told him to go for the series that they would work around it if Independence Day 2 get made.

One of the sticking points with getting the film made is whether Smith will do it or not. He has expressed some interest on returning to the role of Captain Steven Hiller, but if he doesn't Pullman said there is a back up plan. "“The Will Smith part of it may be ongoing but I think there’s strategies for both. I like what I have to do in both of them. I’m not in an old age home in a wheelchair being wheeled out for one more moment. It’s a very interesting conception of what happens to Whitmore between then and when it picks back up," he explained. So even if Smith decides not to do it, there is a chance that the project could move forward.

With all of this being said though, the sequel has had trouble getting off the ground. Being a realist, Pullman is not holding his breath because the project is as he called it, "plagued." It is however, encouraging to hear that it does not all fall on whether or not Will Smith wants to do the film. For the latest on all Scifi Movies make sure to check back here at CBM.

Best speech of all time.
Triptheorist - 1/9/2013, 10:35 AM
As long as Jaden Smith isn't in it, I'm happy.
retr0g0dfather - 1/9/2013, 10:35 AM
I'm not sure that we need this sequel.

Super12 - 1/9/2013, 11:00 AM
Oh heck yes. Bring on more President Whitmore!! One of the best U.S. presidents in history. Only 2nd behind President Ryan from Air Force One. lol
Jerec350 - 1/9/2013, 11:16 AM
To this day whenever I watch that movie I get chills during his speech. I hope to see some ground battles with the aliens this time.

HAHA he was the worst thing in that stupendous film!
nordberg - 1/9/2013, 11:47 AM
ID4 was monumentally stupid and trite (inspirational Presidential speech included), and not in an entertaining way. I'm surprised that so many here are nostalgic for it. Ok, I'm not so surprised.

Why would he still be relavent in th timeline of the film... he would be like 4 presidents ago...
Durf - 1/9/2013, 12:01 PM
I really liked the first one, but I thought that it was pretty self contained. So I don't think we need a sequel, especially 17 years later now.

Oh, and yes his speech is awesome
smgmayhem - 1/9/2013, 12:03 PM
The movie is needed because somewhere out in the cosmos a planet is friggin wondering what happened to their military fleet, so they get this signal from the mother ship before it explodes that the humans have won. So they mobilize the whole planet to do an all out no mercy assault. Captain Hiller is no longer a Marine pilot he is now Captain of his team of astronauts. Pullmans character is a recluse who lives out his days away from all the politics reveared as a old war hero. And Jeff Goldblums character is now president of a global space recon team of the worlds top engineers and scientists trying to pinpoint the location of exttraterrestrial planets capable of what happened on Independence Day. THATS WHY WE NEED ANOTHER DAMN MOVIE...

Imagination at its best people. Use it wisely...
SaxoWolf - 1/9/2013, 12:14 PM
bring it!
Floke - 1/9/2013, 12:18 PM
It was a good fun movie. The first half is great, but gets a little too stupid with bad comedy after the aliens opened a jar off destructoid jam over the humans. (can you say it gets a little Bayish?).

I know this is not a movie speech.. but the best speech ever caught on tape:
Dwight Schrute, Salesman of the year speech.
supermarioworldE - 1/9/2013, 12:21 PM
One of the dumbest movies I've ever seen. No sequel should ever be given to a Roland Emmerich property. The guy's a complete hack.
DioFoRio - 1/9/2013, 12:22 PM
Independence Day 2- Labor Day

A Haunting in Connecticut 2- Ghosts in Georgia

What SuperMario said
Maia87 - 1/9/2013, 12:25 PM

"Battleship" is already, like, the "Independence Day" of our time.
CharacterAssassin - 1/9/2013, 12:40 PM
If Bill Pullman ever tried to run for PotUS in reality, he'll probably actually have a shot at it... lol
Facade - 1/9/2013, 2:00 PM
This movie is one of the worst films of the 20th century. I'm sure a sequel would rank as one of the worst films of the 21st century, too.

Zoolitron - 1/9/2013, 2:10 PM
NEED? NEED? Why all of you are talking about NEED a sequel, we don't even need a MOVIE.
It's not about needing. It's just about WANT to see again some characters we liked or loved. that's all.
No. We dont't NEED a sequel for ID4, but I really WANT to see what they can make with that story!

I hope for once they don't make humans win again...
MisterMagurlypse - 1/9/2013, 3:17 PM
Not needed. The first one is just fine as a standalone flim. It just doesn't make sense to make a sequel. Besides the $$$ it wil bank.
AlexRival - 1/9/2013, 3:18 PM
I hope this never happens, I love Independence Day but there's no need for a sequel. Just look at Taken 2.
BlackHulk - 1/9/2013, 3:19 PM
Sequel? Why? What kind of storyline will they add to the events that already took place? Last I remembered, half of the worlds population and most of the military forces were wiped out in the first movie. Then again I guess in the movie universe, logic does not mean anything.
eidreven - 1/9/2013, 4:09 PM
its dead. why cant they just accept that its never gonna get made
Zoolitron - 1/9/2013, 4:16 PM
Yes @Yossarian. I WANT to see that, because a LOVE a good story, and I think ALWAYS is a good story when the heroes fall down!
OnePunchBaldy - 1/9/2013, 4:41 PM
I loved Independence Day, but a sequel wouldn't be necessary at all. Hollywood has to realize that not every movie needs a sequel.
beane2099 - 1/9/2013, 6:56 PM
Say what you will about ID4 (I certainly have). I dislike the movie, but it had the best ad campaign in cinema history. The right blend of mystery and awe. When you saw the white house blow up the first time you saw that trailer in theaters your jaw dropped. Each new ad made you salivate that much more. By the time July 4th rolled around you HAD to see that movie (at least you did if you were a teenager). Hell it wasn't until weeks after I saw the movie that I said "Wait a minute...".
mgeoff88 - 1/9/2013, 9:32 PM
ID4 was a fun popcorn movie. It wasn't really a well done Sci-fi movie. Just pure good guys kicking alien ass action.

If this movie does move forward, how can you do a sequel without Will Smith?
KNIGHT3000 - 1/10/2013, 6:36 AM
I like Independence Day, but for me, the best movie speach ever was John Connor from TERMINATOR SALVATION.

"This is John Connor... if you are listening to this, you ARE the resistance"
