As amazing as Guardians of the Galaxy looks, it's going to have to do a lot to top Dawn of the Planet of the Apes as arguably this summer's best movie! Either way, the Matt Reeves helmed sequel looks set to take the #1 spot again this weekend, beating competition from The Purge sequel and more...

According to The Wrap, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes looks set to stay at top of the North American box office with $35 million this weekend, holding off competition from The Purge: Anarchy (which stars Captain America: The Winter Soldier's Frank Grillo) and the critically panned comedy Sex Tape. Great reviews and positive word of mouth means that Matt Reeve's fantastic follow-up to Rise of the Planet of the Apes has suffered a drop of only 52%, meaning it has held up a lot better than The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Godzilla, X-Men: Days of Future Past and Transformers: Age of Extinction. The latter is set to take $9 million during its fourth week of release.

Editor's Note: Both Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and Transformers: Age of Extinction didn't hit the UK until a week or two after the US, so I didn't get around to writing reviews for either. The latter is probably the best instalment yet in the Michael Bay helmed franchise (which may not be saying much depending on your thoughts on them), but it's also incredibly forgettable and I'd struggle to say too much more about it at this point. It is however a lot of fun. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes meanwhile is easily on of this summer's best movies, and the work done by Andy Serkis, Toby Kebbell and the rest of the motion capture actors who collaborated with WETA is nothing short of incredible. It's a fantastic movie, and I can't wait to see where Reeves takes the franchise next. The 3D in both is pointless though. What did you guys think about these two movies?

DrDoom - 7/19/2014, 11:03 AM

A great movie that subsequently quashes the BS myth that the Transformers can't be the main characters of The Transfomers films. The humans were the second wheel of this movie. The first 15 minutes is nothing but CGI apes communicating through ape language which is presented through subtitles.
TheToecutter - 7/19/2014, 11:12 AM
This movie was fantastic. Can't wait for part three.

Mike89 - 7/19/2014, 11:13 AM
And very Well deserved. :)
thewonderer - 7/19/2014, 11:14 AM
This movie deserves it all and more. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes was a downright perfect film. A 10/10, the best summer blockbuster since The Dark Knight, and one of my favorite films of all time. Analogous to The Empire Strikes Back in quality and influence.

As good as Guardians looks, I hope it doesn't take too much away from Dawn.

Glad to see this is holding strong. Never had a doubt.

With the overwhelmingly positive reviews I wouldn't be surprised to see it hold on for a third week.

"...LIke, they aren't tragic cases like Mantinium where he's obviously so dumb that you feel sorry for him. These 3 are like a Trifecta of Failz"

V8ER - 7/19/2014, 11:47 AM
Frickin fantastic movie! Andy Serkis deserves, nay, demands an Oscar!
DannyRand1225 - 7/19/2014, 11:48 AM
awesome, Thank God, there is hope for humanity(that statement is now ironic considering the subject of this movie) but anyway..glad its gonna stay number one..i hope it stays number one next week too...probabaly not cause people love The Rock(as i do) but Hercules does not look that good imo..could be decent but idk..but i still Hope Dawn does well next week and remains on top..this is my favorite movie of the summer and while Guardians looks great imo,its gonna be hard for it to beat this
Klone - 7/19/2014, 11:50 AM
Hercules looks like pure dogshit over bloated with CGI abominations, terrible comedy, the bad type of cliches and idiotic writing... in my opinion of course.
JoJo1982 - 7/19/2014, 11:53 AM
I'm hearing too much good stuff about this movie from work, gym, and bunch of my friends

I will try and see it later on tonight with the family
ALegendaryPanda - 7/19/2014, 11:54 AM

First of all I don't care if someone doesn't like the same movies I like, Turk is just an annoying [frick]ing troll posting the same shit in every god damn thread and I hate him. Second of all, [frick] you sir.
DannyRand1225 - 7/19/2014, 11:54 AM
