BOX OFFICE: Domestic Update For SNOWPIERCER

BOX OFFICE: Domestic Update For SNOWPIERCER

The Weinstein Company and Snowpiercer director Bong Joon-ho were in disagreement about which version of the film should be released here in the US. The result is that the film received a simultaneous VOD and limited theatrical run. A film that some are calling the best of 2014.

Snowpiercer premiered approximately a year ago internationally, with many film critics calling it one of the year's best. Well, the film's US distribution rights were purchased by The Weinstein Company, who felt like some of the themes at play were too complicated for US audiences and wanted 20 minutes of footage cut and monologues added to the film's opening and closing to explain to audiences what occurred. In short, The Weinstein Company felt American audiences, as a whole, were too dumb to understand Snowpiercer in the form that director Bong Joon-ho, originally wanted audiences to experience his film.

Well, after a lengthy battle, the film was released in the version that Joon-ho desired, however, The Weinstein Company refused to give the film a wide, theatrical release. Instead, only 150 theaters in select US cities will play Snowpiercer, with the film also being made available On Demand. To date, the film has grossed $80.2 million dollars internationally, with $3 million dollars earned here in the US during its first week of release. Additionally, the film earned another $2 million dollars through Video-On-Demand (VOD). Not a complete loss for a film with an estimated budget of $39.2 million dollars. However, it's hard to not feel as if the film could have earned more with a wider release and different distributor.

Snowpiercer is based on the French graphic novel Le Transperceneige by Jacques Lob and Jean-Marc Rochette. The film stars Captain America's Chris Evans, Ed Harris, Tilda Swinton and more.

InfiniteMonkey - 7/19/2014, 11:29 AM
Loved this movie despite being insulted by the Weinsteins.

Would have gone to the theatre to see so it can received its proper dues but went to torrent instead.

Some of us are out here willing to pay for Science Fiction movies like this that is out of the common palette that is being widely serve out there but not after a drubbing a few months ago.

Treat them like animals and they will act like animals.
Sitterson - 7/19/2014, 11:31 AM
Great film, hope it makes more.
KINGPEN266 - 7/19/2014, 11:32 AM
i guess ill download it
UnrealLuigi - 7/19/2014, 11:33 AM
I saw it last night. Not bad but could've been better imo. Chris Evans was great in it though. Not so sure about Jaimie Bell who's set to play Ben Grimm though. He's not that great of an actor
dannramm113 - 7/19/2014, 11:34 AM
Good movie with a terrible ending
Bekss - 7/19/2014, 11:34 AM
It is an amazing film
Stubner - 7/19/2014, 11:35 AM
I can totally see where the Weinsteins are coming from and I'm as American as they come.
BlackFlash - 7/19/2014, 11:36 AM
I liked the film not great imo but still really good, I will say though Chris Evans was amazing in this role.
SauronsBANE - 7/19/2014, 11:37 AM
What happened with Snowpiercer is one of the most petty, juvenile, disgusting things to happen in the film industry. Just terrible, which I guess is par for the course. There's no theaters playing Snowpiercer around where I am, so I haven't gotten a chance to check it out yet. I keep hearing incredible things about it though.
InfiniteMonkey - 7/19/2014, 11:40 AM
@SauronBANE1 Its been online for months mate. High Definition. Give it a go.
themidnightking - 7/19/2014, 11:57 AM
That's a damn shame, this movie deserved more. Chris Evans [frick]ing killed it in the movie
GizmoEl - 7/19/2014, 11:57 AM
It's a solid movie with some great performances. Definitely not for everyone, but I thoroughly enjoyed it.
gaikinger - 7/19/2014, 12:00 PM
it was okay
SauronsBANE - 7/19/2014, 12:03 PM
@InfiniteMonkey, I might end up doing that. Though I also intend to buy it on Blu-ray when it's available...from everything I've heard about it, THIS is the kind of movie that deserves every cent that it makes.
LexHairFight - 7/19/2014, 12:07 PM
I thought the movie was alright, but definitely not what it was hyped to be. It has strong anti-communist and environmental messages which were pretty damn apparent, but it didn't have a huge list of themes and the character development wasn't great. Evans was very good though.

I'd have been interested in seeing the edited version. People automatically think the director's version is going to be better, but often they are stuck in the weeds and miss sight of the big picture. They love a scene so much, they ignore how it is affecting the other pieces.
MrCBM56 - 7/19/2014, 12:08 PM
@SauronsBANE1 I have u-verse. It's on On demand for me. Terrific film, rented it yesterday.
LexHairFight - 7/19/2014, 12:09 PM
@SauronsBANE1 -

You may want to temper your expectations a little - just look at the people here. Some loved it, most thought it was ok.
Humperdink - 7/19/2014, 12:13 PM
It had it's weak spots, and fell apart a little in the end but overall it was a good movie.

Almost surreal at certain points.
DrKinsolving - 7/19/2014, 12:20 PM
It was alright, I liked Evans, but it definitely wasn't the Best of 2014
REPOMAN - 7/19/2014, 12:23 PM

It could be making a lot more money if Weinstein released the film in the other countries he owns distribution rights in:

UK, Australia, South Africa and New Zealand.

It's almost like he doesn't want it to make money out of spite.

Equivocal - 7/19/2014, 12:24 PM
this is one of the BEST movies of 2014 so far !

I like how they put a bunch of different themes in the movie, the analogies in it, definitively a movie that makes you think, Not your average pop corn movie, it was a nice surprise to see Chris Evans doing a different kind of role, it was nice to see him being vulnerable.

8.5/10 for me !

8 ½
SuperCat - 7/19/2014, 12:26 PM
May rent this On Demand.
PAF - 7/19/2014, 12:38 PM
I can't stand Weinstein's fat ass. I loved this film tho. The ending was a little conflicting but I did love the film. As for anyone who hasn't seen the film, watch it for YOURSELF. Don't listen to anyone else. Some liked it, some didn't. Don't let others sway your opinion going into a film.
SauronsBANE - 7/19/2014, 12:39 PM
@MrCBM56, Sweet, I'll have to see if I get it On-Demand too!

@AOSgotAlright, Absolutely no offense intended to anyone here, but I usually don't adjust my movie expectations based on comments from CBM users haha. From the trailers I've seen, all the reviews I've read, all the comments on other sites, everything makes Snowpiercer out to be something I'd personally LOVE. Can't wait to see if it holds up!
neihofft - 7/19/2014, 12:43 PM
Why does a movie that made 3 million in US have an article to say it made that much?...
SpiderFraud - 7/19/2014, 12:45 PM
I hope we get more Sci-Fi movies like this. Hollywood is lacking in smart science fiction movies.
cjohnston - 7/19/2014, 12:56 PM
LOVEDlovedloved this film.

- STILL hoping to see it in theatres before it shuffles off into obscurity....

..i know its been stated, but - there NEEDS to be more Whip-Smart, Savy, Intellectual, Competent Scifi fare like this... (not to mention from other genres as well), for those of us so inclined to choose from.
LexHairFight - 7/19/2014, 12:56 PM
Haha, fair point Bane. I only offered the advice because I'd probably have liked it more if I wasn't expecting so much.
CaptAmericaSux - 7/19/2014, 1:02 PM
The theater a little father away from me is huge, and has room for these limited releases. The theater closer to me is smaller, and only gets the big releases. So as I was preparing to go to the bigger theater, where I was sure Snowpierce would be, I was surprised to see it was showing at the smaller nearby venue!

Enough theater goers must have demanded it. Its already gone, so I was lucky to see it when I did. Its still at the bigger AMC. I could have just watched it at home, it was also on the cable On Demand, but I wanted to see it on the theater screen.

A little bizzarre :)...but it was very interesting, seeing how humans are living after the failed chemical solution to global warming. John Hurt was like The Terminator in this movie :D! Like Jason!
JorL5150 - 7/19/2014, 1:08 PM
Weinstein is a super mega off the charts endlessly reminding us he is an asshole of the highest order.

He is so asshole - his cavity creates an anamolous paradoxical never ending chasm of dickheadiness that loops in infinity.

There are very very few assholes THAT assholey.
Weinstein - the rest of the world can stitch their assholes closed - as you are enough asshole for the planet.
SauronsBANE - 7/19/2014, 1:10 PM
@AOSgotAlright, Oh trust me, I was referring more to some of the other comments on this thread (the ones that basically say: the movie was good/okay/not bad/good but bad ending...those really don't tell me anything about the movie itself haha), not necessarily your comments. I realize I could've phrased that a bit better.

@IndependentGeorge, I don't know how I've only just managed to see this, but you just became my top favorite parody account on this site haha.
SauronsBANE - 7/19/2014, 1:30 PM
@IndependentGeorge, Oh God, I'm going to have to retract my previous statement if you continue to use Bieber gifs. Costanza gifs, or get out! =P
HRDWYR - 7/19/2014, 1:40 PM
"good movie", "great movie"?! are you f*cking serious?! This was a big pile of snowpiercing sh!t!
mbembet - 7/19/2014, 1:44 PM
the best of 2014? but 2014 ain't over yet :P
AC1 - 7/19/2014, 1:53 PM
Really want to see this, hope it gets a UK release
Ryguy88 - 7/19/2014, 1:58 PM
"The Weinstein Company felt American audiences, as a whole, were too dumb to understand Snowpiercer in the form that director Bong Joon-ho, originally wanted audiences to experience his film."

That's BS, there have been plenty of films released in the States which were much more complex than Snowpiercer. The Weinstein Company simply wanted to maximize profits by making the movie as accessible as possible. They didn't end up doing that so they weren't confident in its selling power and chose to release on a smaller scale.
Equivocal - 7/19/2014, 2:09 PM
from the standee at my local amc theater in Vegas.

Ancar - 7/19/2014, 2:25 PM
I can't understand you, guys. This is Bong Joon-ho's worst film ever. It is a good movie? Yes. And only this.
Jollem - 7/19/2014, 2:35 PM
i do wanna see this
