BOX OFFICE: EDGE OF TOMORROW Debuts At #3 In North America; Hits $100M Worldwide

Doug Liman's Edge of Tomorrow (which stars Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt) hasn't been able to top Maleficent and The Fault in Our Stars this weekend, but with a decent debut of $29 million, it has already managed to pass $100 million worldwide. Read on for details!

The epic action of “Edge of Tomorrow” unfolds in a near future in which an alien race has hit the Earth in an unrelenting assault, unbeatable by any military unit in the world. Lt. Col. Bill Cage (Cruise) is an officer who has never seen a day of combat when he is unceremoniously dropped into what amounts to little more than a suicide mission. Killed within minutes, Cage now finds himself inexplicably thrown into a time loop—forcing him to live out the same brutal combat over and over, fighting and dying again…and again. But with each battle, Cage becomes able to engage the adversaries with increasing skill, alongside Special Forces warrior Rita Vrataski (Blunt). And, as Cage and Rita take the fight to the aliens, each repeated encounter gets them one step closer to defeating the enemy.

It's obviously a shame that Edge of Tomorrow hasn't opened bigger in North America, and the reasons behind it falling short aren't really clear. Either way, it's a fantastic sci-fi movie (you can read my review by clicking here) and with any luck it will continue performing well overseas!

Starring Tom Cruise, Emily Blunt, Bill Paxton, Brendan Gleeson, Noah Taylor, Kick Gurry, Dragomir Mrsic, Charlotte Riely, Jonas Armstrong, Franz Drameh, Masayoshi Haneda, and Tony Way,
Edge of Tomorrow opens in 2D, 3D, and IMAX 3D on June 6th.

Are you going to report how dofp has had consecutive weekends with large drops (the highest between any comicbook film this year) or is that honor only left to the amazing spiderman 2?
TheRealRemyLebeau - 6/8/2014, 10:37 AM
I don't won't @josh's bias input. Report the facts and news thank-you very much! ;)
Chcl - 6/8/2014, 10:38 AM
Maleficent deserves the great office!!!!!!
AlexanderLykins - 6/8/2014, 10:39 AM
I thoroughly enjoyed Edge of Tomorrow. Tom Cruise was in top form and Emily Blunt was outstanding. Then again I like Emily Blunt in everything. Watching this movie shows me that she was made for Black Widow.
TheRealRemyLebeau - 6/8/2014, 10:40 AM
Too bad for Edge of Tommorrow. It seemed it deserved more after all the raving reviews. :( It was predicted that the public would sleep on this film though after oblivion. Tom is still Mr. Blockbuster though to me. Keep going Tom! ;)
THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - 6/8/2014, 10:40 AM
This is the type of movie that deserves to make a lot of money but won't unfortunately.
AlexanderLykins - 6/8/2014, 10:41 AM
TheRealRemyLebeau - 6/8/2014, 10:41 AM
If Marvel is smart they will get another worthy role for Emily Blunt.
superotherside - 6/8/2014, 10:41 AM
I always like Josh's hilarious write ups, that make the flame wars. It's hilarious because the complainers are the ones that make him money...

Good stuff Josh ;P
Nick56 - 6/8/2014, 10:43 AM
Well at least EofT is doing well overseas. Great movie imo.
TheRealRemyLebeau - 6/8/2014, 10:43 AM
This tweet:

Overseas, THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 ($503M) has surpassed the lifetime gross of AMAZING SPIDER-MAN ($495M).

Must be killing josh right now lmao! Go spidey Go!! :D
TheRealRemyLebeau - 6/8/2014, 10:46 AM
Captain America won't be past by any comicbook film domestically this year besides Transformers most likely.
KingPatel - 6/8/2014, 10:46 AM
I commend WB for having confidence in Edge of Tomorrow, because it really is terrific, but I feel like they could've benefitted more from a December release. Cruise has done pretty well then, but I think the film will be fine in the long run.
Platinum - 6/8/2014, 10:47 AM
It's nice to see DOFP pass 600 million and also glad The Amazing Stalker-Man 2 is finally dying down.

Haven't seen Edge but will definitely go now after all those rave reviews.
TheRealRemyLebeau - 6/8/2014, 10:48 AM
How come there isn't many update articles on dofp? I thought the greatest film ever would get more attention. :p
JoshWilding - 6/8/2014, 10:48 AM
Yeah, it kills me that a sequel with a $250 million budget (and I'm pretty sure that doesn't include marketing costs) has barely passed the first instalment at the box office. LOL.
laptopbehemoth - 6/8/2014, 10:49 AM
With its inflated budget, eot will need to gross at least $330-350m to break even. Gonna lose a lot of money me thinks!!!
TheRealRemyLebeau - 6/8/2014, 10:52 AM
Well @pending dofp is dying quicker than The Amazing Spiderman 2 so....... ;)
Marqy - 6/8/2014, 10:53 AM
X-men passed 600 million ! Great job ... its good to see this movie doing great ....
Canary - 6/8/2014, 10:53 AM
Emily Blunt should play Hawkgirl in Batman v Superman.
Joel Edgerton should be cast as Dr. Strange..

TheRealRemyLebeau - 6/8/2014, 10:54 AM
Lmao @josh supposedly $250 million you mean good sir. You still mad. # DiabolicalHaterofTheYear ;)
TheRealRemyLebeau - 6/8/2014, 10:56 AM
I'm still waiting for those weekend drop articles @josh for dofp. Get on it quick before someone beats you to it. ;)
Platinum - 6/8/2014, 10:56 AM

Yeah but TASM2 was obviously the more expensive of the two and unlike Sony, Fox doesn't have to worry about the possibility of going under. Since Sony is in some deep financial troubles.
TheRealRemyLebeau - 6/8/2014, 11:01 AM
@pending doesn't matter. Marvel has got Sony right where they want them. Who ie Sony going to ask for help? Yes indeed it will be Marvel Studios. I'm not fretting over that. ;)
TheRealRemyLebeau - 6/8/2014, 11:05 AM
@DoubleD Captain America The Winter soldier domestic take is up there with the top comicbook films ever right behind Avengers, Transformers films, Iron Man Films, Raimis Spiderman films, Nolan's Batman films, and Man of Steel. Cap is amongst the big boys domestically. TWS is the G.O.A.T. ;)
Braveandthebold - 6/8/2014, 11:16 AM
Go watch of “Edge of Tomorrow” people, please.

Can you feel the burn, Remy?

ManDeth - 6/8/2014, 11:28 AM
Edge was OK. No real complaints. As for alien vs human war movies I liked Battle Los Angeles far more.
GeekyCheekyChic - 6/8/2014, 11:29 AM
Next week its tied for second
batz11 - 6/8/2014, 11:37 AM
Great movie, hope word of mouth helps it out...
OpticBlastWins - 6/8/2014, 11:48 AM
Just got back from this movie. One of the better movies ive seen this year.
Berserker187 - 6/8/2014, 12:05 PM
This is a good movie a sleeper in the summer a must see.
xcan - 6/8/2014, 12:12 PM
Remster, why would Josh continue to beat a dead horse. I gave you this link before, but I'll just put it out in the open so it's easier to digest.

SONY has ruined the franchise. They've absolutely cannibalized a "guaranteed" box office money maker. Embarrassing. Fucck you SONY.

1 Spider-Man Sony $553,098,600 $403,706,375 5/3/02
2 Spider-Man 2 Sony $478,863,600 $373,585,825 6/30/04
3 Spider-Man 3 Sony $389,357,700 $336,530,303 5/4/07
4 The Amazing Spider-Man $268,093,100 $262,030,663 7/3/12
5 The Amazing Spider-Man 2$194,928,000 $194,928,000 5/2/14
Robe - 6/8/2014, 12:32 PM
Sure Spider-Man is down for North America but it has made over 500m international.
North America isn't the world.
Mastyrwerk - 6/8/2014, 12:35 PM
Edge was FANTASTIC. Just got back from seeing it. I recommend it to everybody. Very well written/directed/paced.
soforizo - 6/8/2014, 12:48 PM
I loved it. I was able to get immersed into the movie, which is one of the most important factors in a movie for me. Loved that Emily chick too, hopefully she gets added to BvS or JL.
chef - 6/8/2014, 12:55 PM
I dont know why the Studio decided to release it during the overcrowded summer season. Its gonna get lost in the pile and forgotten. Looper had great reviews and it couldnt even break 100 million.
