The North American box office numbers are coming in and Deadline reports, Scarlett Johansson's Lucy will out muscle Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's Hercules for the top spot despite opening in 400 less theaters. Come check it out!

Based on Friday's North American box office numbers, Universal Pictures' Lucy is set to earn between $42M to $44M in its opening weekend. The sci-fi actioner stars Scarlett Johansson ("Captain America: The Winter Soldier") and was directed by Luc Besson ("Léon: The Professional"). This will be the best opening weekend for a film starring Scarlett Johansson that wasn't produced by Marvel Studios. It will also be the best opening weekend for a film directed by Luc Besson. His previous best was $17M for The Fifth Element. However, the film was not well received by audiences as they only gave it a 'C+' CinemaScore.

Paramount and MGM's Hercules will finish in second with $28M to $30M. It stars Dwayne Johnson in the title role. If the numbers stay about the same this will be the 8th best opening for a movie starring The Rock, just ahead of Journey 2: The Mysterious Island ($27M opening)This will also mark the 3th best opening for a Brett Ratner-directed film just behind his original Rush Hour film, which opened to $33M in 1998. Audiences seemed to enjoy the film more than Lucy as they gave it a  'B+' CinemaScore.

In its third weekend, 20th Century Fox's Dawn of the Planet of the Apes will come in third with $16M to $17M. The film is $30M shy of the coveted $200M domestic mark.

From La Femme Nikita and The Professional to The Fifth Element, writer/director Luc Besson has created some of the toughest, most memorable female action heroes in cinematic history. Now, Besson directs Scarlett Johansson in Lucy, an action-thriller that tracks a woman accidentally caught in a dark deal who turns the tables on her captors and transforms into a merciless warrior evolved beyond human logic. Lucy also stars Academy Award® winner Morgan Freeman and is produced by Virginie Besson-Silla for EuropaCorp. Universal Pictures will distribute the movie worldwide, except for France, Benelux and China.

Hopefully this will convince Marvel that Scarlett is a big enough box office draw to open a Black Widow solo film. They should put David Hayter back to work on a new draft.
ManofSteel23 - 7/26/2014, 2:12 AM
and again, people think dwayne is a box office draw, yeah people will go see his movie, but hes been beaten my scarlet lol
patrat18 - 7/26/2014, 2:13 AM
The reviews are terrible for Lucy.
EhMaybeSays - 7/26/2014, 2:13 AM
This wasn't as good as the trailer.
patrat18 - 7/26/2014, 2:16 AM
People are worried about Brett Ratner.
charlie2094 - 7/26/2014, 2:17 AM
Pretty good numbers for Lucy, sure (like mentioned above) this helps the chances of getting a Black Widow film. If this managed an opening of $44 million, sure if it was her as Black Widow in a Marvel Studios film, could probably manage $60 if not more.

Honestly expected Hercules to beat this, but it does seem like Johnson is really the only reason to see it, still a big draw.
McGee - 7/26/2014, 2:18 AM
Well....I guess movie studios can't say wimmins don't make bank at the Box Office anymore.

Bring on female superhero solo films.

McGee - 7/26/2014, 2:20 AM
....I wish I could see what that guy sees.
patrat18 - 7/26/2014, 2:20 AM
I find it odd that nobody's pushing for a Hawkeye film, the guy gets no shine whatsoever.
remembertheking - 7/26/2014, 2:25 AM
the box office numbers are not because of scarlet Johansen. So stop asking for a black widow film. Why would anyone want to see that is what i dont understand. she works well when paired in a bigger comic book character movie. she was great in cap 2. The reason the box office numbers are huge is because of the whole concept of Lucy and the marketing behind it. the trailers were great and the media has been buzzing about it. The movie sucks though.
McGee - 7/26/2014, 2:25 AM
patrat....him and Black Widow!

patrat18 - 7/26/2014, 2:30 AM
@McGee pretty much.
TruePunishment - 7/26/2014, 2:30 AM
"3th best opening"? Dafuq does that mean?
Snotzo - 7/26/2014, 2:31 AM
C+ Yikes
Snotzo - 7/26/2014, 2:32 AM
You don't know what Thirth is @TruePunishment ???
knocturnal - 7/26/2014, 2:34 AM
3th? Lol
FearTheLiving - 7/26/2014, 2:35 AM
I'd love a Hawkeye movie, but considering he really hasn't gotten the chance to show off his character. They need to put him in a team-up movie or be awesome in Avengers 2, and show off his personality that reflect him more so in the main 616 universe do that I can see people discussing the notion of a Hawkeye movie or at the very least they could do West Coast Avengers (Especially with Bobbi heading into Agents of Shield).

I just hope Hawkeye doesn't get the shaft (pun intended) in the movie universe.
patrat18 - 7/26/2014, 2:39 AM
@FearTheLiving Agreed. My problem is they had a chance to put him in the Cap 2 movie, but instead they gave it to Black Widow who was already in Ironman 2. She did a great job, but that shine could of went to Hawkeye. Hopefully he becomes very usefull in Aou.
Barry - 7/26/2014, 2:47 AM
I'd like to see Marvel experiment with making films with lower budgets. They could make solo films for both Black Widow and Hawkeye for less than the budget of one of their blockbusters.
TheAmericanPatriot - 7/26/2014, 2:52 AM
After this showing I can see Marvel giving Johansson her own movie (maybe she'll be paired up with Hawkeye). Heck, she just beat The Rock in the Box Office! DC's future Shazam got beat by Black Widow! Do it Marvel! Make the first successful female superhero movie!
TheAmericanPatriot - 7/26/2014, 2:55 AM
Mockingbird is coming to AoS! I hope they bring Jimmy Woo too! Agents of Atlas!
TheAmericanPatriot - 7/26/2014, 2:59 AM
On a side note...Lucy sucked. The best part was Old Boy.
Barry - 7/26/2014, 3:02 AM
If they do a Black Widow solo film right, it could become more than just a one-off. Her character could be the next Jason Bourne or James Bond and spawn a whole series of films.
Battabing - 7/26/2014, 3:04 AM
Lucy is terrible, while Hercules was actually fun and charming.
patrat18 - 7/26/2014, 3:09 AM
"DC's future Shazam got beat by Black Widow"

Wow. that's what you take from this? Sad.
patrat18 - 7/26/2014, 3:16 AM
@DlAMONDZ Then you don't "love" The Rock. :(

1TheBatFan1 - 7/26/2014, 3:20 AM
Kinda makes you wonder who would do better at the box office, a stand alone black window movie? or the shazam movie.
patrat18 - 7/26/2014, 3:40 AM
@DlAMONDZ 3-6? wtf

"So I'll probably go next week"

You do love The Rock.
OnePunchBaldy - 7/26/2014, 3:44 AM
Hercules was a LOT better than expected. Would actually watch again

Lucy... was ehhh
OnePunchBaldy - 7/26/2014, 3:45 AM
I don't see what's so interesting about a Black Widow solo film...
dellamorte1872 - 7/26/2014, 4:08 AM
Ew! Who would want a BLACK WIDOW film? Seriously? Her solo books ALWAYS get cancelled. I don't wanna see a super SPY with zero powers, Bourne or bond don't exist in a world of superheroes. Why would she? when you have the likes of greater AVENGERS power sets she just seems even more out matched and silly. I mean HAWKEYE has the whole PYM particles thing, at least he has a diverse power set and actually FINALLY has a successful solo title. I say CLINT way before NATASHA because I don't care about her story enough today to hope it's entertaining enough to justify
SuperCat - 7/26/2014, 4:26 AM
I won't be seeing either of the 2 films until they hit cable.
Alfredo27 - 7/26/2014, 4:33 AM
what? why? Could a movie look or sound dumber. Maybe having the name Ratner on the title of the movie turned people off of Hercules.
ekrolo2 - 7/26/2014, 4:33 AM
I think a BW movie would be pointless now, she works much better when she has others to play off of like Cap and Falcon and if the Infinity Gauntlet is the premise of A3 then its better to build up the big guns for that instead of wasting time with small fry *looks over to Ant-Man*
driver - 7/26/2014, 4:41 AM
Just saw Hercules. Was better than I thought. Worth checking out.
RobertLiefeld - 7/26/2014, 4:44 AM
I have not seen either of the films, but I have not heard good things from those who have. I will probably catch them when they are free on Netflix or Amazon Prime.
giannis - 7/26/2014, 4:48 AM
Hercules was better than I expected and Dwayne Johnson convinced me that he's the titular character. However, the movie could have been even better if it followed the graphic novel more closely.
ckal - 7/26/2014, 5:17 AM
I would much rather see a SHIELD or team up film than a solo Black Widow film.

This way we could get Hawkeye, Black Widow, and others in the same film, but have Natasha and Clint headline it.
Cles - 7/26/2014, 5:18 AM
If Marvel is going to showcase a female hero front and center, I would rather that go to someone like Captain Marvel. She has a great power set, and is a heavy hitter, which makes for a more marketable film. I'm not saying that a BW film won't work, just that, in my opinion, there are better heroes to use.

It's a shame about Lucy. I tend to enjoy Besson's style. I was really pulling for it.
mgeoff88 - 7/26/2014, 5:43 AM
I love The Rock, so I'll check out Hercules. I think that's awesome a female led action movie is kicking ass at the box office.
