BOX OFFICE: PACIFIC RIM Still Going Strong Overseas

Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim continues to do well at the international box office. International marketing efforts aiming to boost Pacific Rim's box office numbers higher, had del Toro in Japan last week, leading to a trip to the Gundam museum in Tokyo.

Pacific Rim Guillermo del Toro Gundam Japan visit
Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim continues to do well at the international box office. Currently, Pacific Rim's box office total rests at $344.170 million USD with 71.9% of that total ($247.4 M) coming from foreign territories. Last Week, del Toro was in Japan to promote the film and interestingly enough, the director visited a giant Gundam statue and Gundam museum which led to the director revealing that the Cherno Alpha jaeger was inspired by the zaku model from Gundam.

"When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes—a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)—who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse."

wcwpoet - 8/12/2013, 7:11 AM
I just want a damn Gundam Wing movie! I'm fine if there isn't a sequel to Pacific Rim though I greatly enjoyed but it wrapped itself up nicely. But I really was hoping and still hope this is successful so we can get a Gundam Wing movie.
fettastic - 8/12/2013, 7:16 AM
And yet, it is still unsuccessful. The fact that foreign audiences don't care about a film's internal logic or character development notwithstanding.
FEJ - 8/12/2013, 7:18 AM
Mean while over seas, who the hell is Adam Sandler. Grown ups 2 hurt Pacific Rim's box office success in the U.S.
Spidey91 - 8/12/2013, 7:19 AM
I sense del Toro pushing for a Gundam movie :P
savageguitarist - 8/12/2013, 7:22 AM
keep the updates coming we love it. ignore the turd burglar up there.
gmoney0505 - 8/12/2013, 7:28 AM
Great movie. Hope it continues to do well over there. So Del Toro, what about JL: Dark or HB3 any new info?
TheSuperguy - 8/12/2013, 7:30 AM
One of the best movies of the summer for me, along with Star Trek Into Darkness and Elysium. Can't wait for a sequel.
savageguitarist - 8/12/2013, 7:38 AM
America has crap taste in movies and music.. pacific rim doing good over seas. wacken 2014 metal festival sells out 75,000 tickets in 39 minutes a year before the show. and few days after wacken 2013. mean while in America Justin beiber and rap music banks.
fettastic - 8/12/2013, 7:48 AM
Film in which using planes to shoot missiles and drop bombs on monsters they see coming for miles and miles away is nixed for creating giant robots to wait until they get near shore and punch them while doing line dancing, leading to mass destruction in the puzzlingly still populated cities. And of course ultimately they shoot the monsters anyway.

Most Americans said ".....Dafuq?".

The Chinese think that is quality film making.

And AMERICANS are the stupid ones?
BboiBlack - 8/12/2013, 7:49 AM
Too bad this movie shortchanged the international characters.
Gamera623 - 8/12/2013, 7:49 AM
Pacific Rim was he best movie of the summer.
Best of the whole year so far.

American tastes suck sometimes. Glad to hear this movie is doing well overseas. A sequel would be most welcome.
damntree - 8/12/2013, 7:58 AM
Best film of the year?

JettJagguarrr - 8/12/2013, 7:59 AM
This movie was a good movie that some people refused to get up off their fat azzez and go see. Glad to hear it's doing even better out of the freaking states.

Alot of movies are seeing their box office bolstered by overseas money. Wolverine, Pacific Rim and WWZ will easily see sequels thanks in large part to international money.

Americans will now have to realize that alot of movies will be geared towards the interanational audience more and more. The cost of these big budget movies require it. Get used to seeing giant robots and alot of weird stuff in your movies.
Spidey91 - 8/12/2013, 8:09 AM

c'mon, it's a movie, not everything has to be realistic or have a reason grounded in reality. can we just have fun with a giant robot movie? or do you prefer 2 hours of exposition about the inner workings of this fantasy world? *cough*ManOfSteel*cough*
marvel72 - 8/12/2013, 8:27 AM
best movie of the summer, but not the year.
Raythbane - 8/12/2013, 8:37 AM
@fettastic youmust be friends with Josh.

Would explain a lot. lol
C17Swampy - 8/12/2013, 8:42 AM
hoping this film gets a sequel wasn't the best movie of the summer but it was in my top 5
113 - 8/12/2013, 8:45 AM
Guillermo is such a little kid. Which is why Pacific Rim was awesome.
Mrsinister - 8/12/2013, 8:50 AM
@savage that's why all other countries follow our lead in pop culture.
AvatarIII - 8/12/2013, 8:51 AM
Don't they (breifly) explain it in the movie, that if they kill the Kaiju out at sea they get that Kaiju Blue stuff, which is like a toxic oil spill. If they are fought with robots it reduces the Kaiju Blue, and makes their bodies easier to deal with.
superbatspiderman - 8/12/2013, 8:52 AM
I loved this movie but to be honest I do not really want a sequel. The solved all of their problems in the first movie and they don't need a sequel.
symbiotics - 8/12/2013, 8:54 AM
he looked like a kid in a candy store :)
xcan - 8/12/2013, 10:26 AM
Does anyone have access to the Canadian / US split for the BO on PR? Usually Canadian films have about a 10% weight in the NA BO, but I'm curious if the Canadian BO take is higher for this one.
AnimatedTdot - 8/12/2013, 10:26 AM
i called it, i knew when it got overseas it would do good. and it still hasnt hit japan yet, cant wait to see those numbers they are robot centric over there. Gundam Wing anybody.
SUPERSHADOWBAT - 8/12/2013, 10:31 AM
I enjoyed Pacific Rim and wouldn't mind a sequel, but it would have to be a totally different storyline.
BubblesShedAndBreakfast - 8/12/2013, 10:39 AM
Nice to see a story on here by someone that's not using their power to hate on a movie they didn't like!
fettastic - 8/12/2013, 10:44 AM
Yeah, Japan, whom all the cum-lickers were parading around as the ones to save Pacific Rim.....gave a collective ".....meh" to the film and offered up a pathetic $3M!
fettastic - 8/12/2013, 11:44 AM
No I'm part of the OVERWHELMING majority who thought this film looked stupid.
