Director Guillermo Del Toro Provides Commentary For PACIFIC RIM Trailer

MTV News' Josh Horowitz sits down with director Guillermo del Toro to discuss the new trailer for Pacific Rim. During the conversation Guillermo reveals that we will see what's on the other side of the inter-dimensional portal where the creatures come from.

During the commentary for the new Pacific Rim trailer Guillermo del Toro explains where such and such scenes will appear in the actual order of the film. He also reveals new details, one those is that the underwater inter-dimensional portal that unleashes the monstrous creatures will be explored. As we will see what's on the other side, where these beasts come from.

Ain't It Cool has also released Q&A video they conducted with Guillermo during their recent Butt-Numb-A-Thon event. He describes how he wanted Pacific Rim to feel like a World War II action movie like Alexander Korda made.

PACIFIC RIM SYNOPSIS - When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes-a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)-who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

Pacific Rim is scheduled for release on July 12, 2013. The cast includes Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Charlie Day, Rinko Kikuchi, Max Martini, Rob Kazinsky, Clifton Collins Jr. and Diego Klattenhoff.

I love this director, and I say that in the most heterosexual way possible.

Everything this guy touches turns to gold:

Cronos (1993) ✓
Mimic (1997) ✓
The Devil's Backbone (2001) ✓
Blade II (2002) ✓
Hellboy (2004) ✓
Pan's Labyrinth (2006) ✓
HB II: Golden Army (2008) ✓
Pacific Rim (2013) ✓

I'm just wondering who will snatch him up first for a major comic property: MARVEL or DC Comics.

I want to see him on a big name property like: BATMAN. I think that his talents are wasted on D list heroes. In fact, Pacific Rim (200 Million) is the first movie where Guillermo del Torro has had a big budget to play with; every other movie has ranged from a meager 2 Million (see: Cronos) to 85 Million (see:HB:II).

Honestly this movie looks cool

- there is clearly an almost endless list of influences you could talk about. Gundam / GodZilla / Evongelion /Robotech ...pretty much anything with giant monsters and robots fighting with humans in cool suits controlling them....

- I can never really understand what Guillermo Del Toro says...

- wow that dude needs to shave that massive ginger neck beard and invest in a gym membership

^Second video only works. First one is a trap.

@Preston you're my kind of people haha del Toro deserves all the money he wants to tell his stories. I would like him on a CBM however I do really like his original ideas so it's tough to choose between seeing him bring a character I love to life or having him create a character I'll love.
It would be awesome if Marvel gave him the reigns to a new Blade franchise or something but I think he would pass on it. He would probably make an awesome Dr Strange movie though.

I totally agree with you guys about Del Toro and I can't say enough how much I hope this movie succeeds and how good it will be for the genre if done correctly. Looking at the footage now I can't stop myself from thinking "maybe someone actually got it right this time!?!"

Bwaaaahahaha. "I wanted to make a movie that even if you don't know anything about Kaiju or mecha, you'll still get a boner"

This is why GDT is awesome

So he's combined his passion for H. P. Lovecraft with Robotech...
