DOCTOR WHO: First Official Image Of Peter Capaldi As 'The Doctor' Released

The eighth series of Doctor Who has begun filming in Cardiff, Wales, and the BBC have issued the following press release along with the first official image of Peter Capaldi in his new get-up as 'The Doctor' accompanied by Jenna Coleman's 'Clara Oswald'. Check it out!

The new Doctor, Peter Capaldi, stepped on set today for his first full day of filming as production begins on series 8 of the hit BBC show. 10.2 million tuned-in on Christmas Day to get their first glimpse of Capaldi in one of TV’s most iconic roles in the festive special ‘The Time of the Doctor’, which saw Matt Smith hang-up his bow tie after 4 years in the role.

Capaldi was revealed as the Doctor in a live BBC One show in August, after months of speculation about the next Doctor’s identity. Arriving on set in Cardiff to begin filming, Peter Capaldi said: "New job, first day, slightly nervous. Just like the Doctor, I'm emerging from the TARDIS into a whole other world." Steven Moffat, Lead Writer and Executive Producer, added: "First the eyebrows! Then, at Christmas, the face! Coming soon, the whole Doctor. In the Cardiff studios, the Capaldi era begins."

Accompanying the Doctor on his adventures will be companion Clara Oswald, played by Jenna Coleman. The first episode of series 8 has been written by Steven Moffat with the second episode penned by Phil Ford. These are the first episodes that Peter will shoot and are directed by Ben Wheatley. Ben Stephenson, Controller of Drama Commissioning, said: "Excitement and anticipation fills the air as Peter Capaldi’s Doctor takes control of the TARDIS for the very first time today. It’s going to be one hell of a ride and I can't wait for the journey to start."

Charlotte Moore, Controller BBC One, commented: "A new year, a new face, a new Doctor! 2014 has arrived and it's Peter Capaldi's time so let the adventures begin!" Filming is taking place in Cardiff until August 2014. Doctor Who is executive produced by Steven Moffat and Brian Minchin, and produced by Nikki Wilson and Peter Bennett. It is a BBC Cymru Wales production for BBC One.

I like Capaldi's outfit, seems very classic Who. Would have liked to seem something...different I guess.

Either way, can't wait!!!
Gamera623 - 1/7/2014, 5:47 AM
Hes still in his 11th incarnation's costume without the bow tie.
The new outfit is still a secret it seems.
Doopie - 1/7/2014, 5:48 AM
will we ever get a Doctor in just jeans and a T-shirt?
Somerset3145 - 1/7/2014, 5:52 AM
Re Doopies comments: Chris ecclestone wore a t-shirt, leather jacket and what looked like black jeans.
Doopie - 1/7/2014, 5:54 AM
ok you're bout an Hawaiian, shorts and some flip flops?
AmazingFantasy - 1/7/2014, 6:03 AM
He's still in Smiths outfit, nice hook to reel em in
supermarioworldE - 1/7/2014, 6:05 AM
The anticipation is killing me.
Gamera623 - 1/7/2014, 6:05 AM
Even though he is wearing Matt Smith's outfit in this pic...I hear the BBC will release a photo of the 12th Doctors real costume tonight.

As for jeans. 8th Doctor Paul McGann's character wore blue jeans later in his adventures. Of course these are the audio adventures so you dont actually SEE the jeans...but you do on the CD case at least.
Just look up Doctor Who: Dark Eyes

Everyone's gonna [frick]ing kill me for saying this but could somebody please explain to me what the heck Dr Who is about? All I know of it is that some dude with a weird screwdriver flies around and time travels in a phone booth or something and when he dies changes forms into some other dude.
Danbojohnj - 1/7/2014, 6:09 AM
Yup that it,and it's brill.
batcheeks8 - 1/7/2014, 6:14 AM
So will the fangirls abondon this series now that the doctor is old or
thewonderer - 1/7/2014, 6:18 AM
Capaldi looks fantastic, absolutely fantastic.

And you know what? So did Smith
Gamera623 - 1/7/2014, 6:20 AM

You pretty much nailed it. Alien in a time machine that also can go anyWHERE not just anyWHEN.

He has adventures righting wrongs and fighting aliens throughout space and time.

The show has been around for 50 years...but it got canceled in 1989 and came back in 2005. I suggest you start with the revival. No need to begin all the way in the black & white era.

Its a brilliant show. But it is a bit odd at first. I strongly suggest you check it out on Netflix.
And dont give up after just 1 episode. Give it a chance.

@MSP2001 He's a character called the doctor and he is a timelord of the planet gallifrey, he's about 1000 years old now and yea every time he dies he regenerates into a new body but he also had minor healing properties as well. He has two hearts, a sonic screwdriver that can mess with technologic equipment and a TARDIS (Time And Relative Dimension In Space). The timelords watch after all of time and space and own tardis' and the doctor originally took an outdated model and escaped Galifrey to go on adventures. The camouflage feature was busted so that's why it looks like a 1960's police call box. Including Capaldi, there has been now 12 different doctors (14 to be technical).

It was on BBC from 1963 to 1989 I believe and was rebooted/continues in 2005 with a new doctor. The story in between that time is revealed that another race called the Daleks (the enemies of the time lords and everyone, really) wanted to take out the planet and a war was brewing. The war was so bad it wiped out each race and the Doctor is the last known Time Lord, continuing to go on to help anybody that needs it throughout space and time. He also picks up companions which are usually always hot women. Hope this helped!

Absolutely excited! Peter Capaldi's gonna own!
MPS2001 - 1/7/2014, 6:42 AM
@Gamera @Spider-Fan
Thanks guys.
Dandy - 1/7/2014, 6:44 AM
Looks like it is following the New Who trend of having the Doctor in his previous incarnations costume for the first episode.

Similarly, it is likely that his own costume will appear at the end of the first episode.
Dandy - 1/7/2014, 6:46 AM

Close on that description but the 2005 was more of a restart than a reboot. It's still following the continuity of the classic series.
MsDarkPhoenix - 1/7/2014, 6:46 AM
@MPS2001 Well, at least you know the most important things. A friend of mine thought that it was about a real doctor at a hospital!

Capaldi will rock it!! Can't wait!!!
ezio619 - 1/7/2014, 7:04 AM
I want a full look of his new costume!!!, anyway while i do miss Matt Smith who was my favorite doctor,i am looking forward to what Peter Capaldi brings to the table which i know is gonna be great
SuperSomething616 - 1/7/2014, 7:04 AM
So not what his outfit will look like as that's clearly Matt Smiths from the regeneration...

Cannot believe they're making us wait 8 months to see Calpadi!!!

BBC B@$tards$....
damntree - 1/7/2014, 7:08 AM
I didn't like the show when I was a kid; don't remember who was the Doctor then. I tried watching it when Christopher Eccleston was the Doctor because everyone always goes on about how awesome it is. After watching him and some chick fight mannequins and some water alien I concluded this show is boring as shit and people are just [frick]ing crazy.
MightyZeus - 1/7/2014, 7:13 AM
He looks great.

Some on cast this dude in a comic book movie.
ALmazing - 1/7/2014, 7:26 AM
Pretty cool stuff, can't wait.
webbedmenace317 - 1/7/2014, 7:33 AM
Is the tag for this going to get changed? This isn't Peter in his Doctor Who costume. It's what Matt as wearing when he regenerated. Change the tag or take it down. Don't post fake information.
Joementum - 1/7/2014, 7:51 AM
Yeah but, what if he likes the hand me downs and keeps Snith's threads?
SuperDude001 - 1/7/2014, 8:04 AM
(Seriously, I don't get the idiots that are confused because they thought this was Capaldi's new outfit, like seriously how? Do you not watch the show...or even glance at it on the internet?)

Anyhow, yeah Capaldi will do a wonderful job! Seems they're really going into a mix of the old and new styles. Although I doubt we will get a photo of Capaldi's actual new outfits for at least a few days as they literally only started filming today and the first episode is a two-parter which Capaldi will mostly be in Smith's outfit. Unless they release some promo they've taken beforehand, that would be cool.
SuperDude001 - 1/7/2014, 8:09 AM
Joementum @ Then the reports of Capaldi and the creative team spending a couple months searching for the right outfit (said to be old with a mix of new) were a complete waste...
maxxgone - 1/7/2014, 8:37 AM
yea the headline got me too. this is 12 in 11's clothes still - NOT in his own gear yet.

he's the doctor
hes a timelord
hes from the planet gallifrey in the constellation of kasteborous
hes 903 years old
and hes the man whos gonna save our lives and all 6 billion lives on this planet as well.
TheDpool - 1/7/2014, 9:12 AM
I'm.sure i saw him in a red coat of some sort the in a small pic okay it wasn't an actual picture but like an cartoon like thing the 12 doctors of Christmas or something....
Spider-Fan - 1/7/2014, 9:16 AM
@Dandy I know thats why I said continues as well. I only meant reboot in terms of new doctor, new companion and a newer background story they made up in between the gap/a fresh start to gain new viewers, although I guess I didn't word that properly lol.
SuperDude001 - 1/7/2014, 9:19 AM
TheDpool @ ...Probably was fan made...
Malcopunch - 1/7/2014, 9:50 AM
KillerTomato - 1/7/2014, 10:14 AM
I'm hoping Capaldi brings a more classic vibe, blended with a little more Eccleston Doctor, and a lot less Tennant/Smith Doctor... and several of my female friends who loved the last few seasons are already screaming heresy about the new "old man" Doctor.
FOOM - 1/7/2014, 10:38 AM
Capaldi is a committed Dr Who geek and he brings bags of experience and gravitas to the show.He might even get me to watch it now and then.
RetroFit - 1/7/2014, 10:58 AM
Thank goodness the reign of The Silly Doctors has come to an end. He brings a serious presence that has been sorely missing. Gravitas, bitches! And my guess is that it will be needed because things are going to get ramped up to a level never before seen!
JorL5150 - 1/7/2014, 11:48 AM
Couple questions-
In the old series did they ever show a regeneration scene ?
Also- there's a debate as to the numbering of the docs, isn't John hurt a retconned first doctor? And that would make the new guy 13(?) so where do we get 14?
GUNSMITH - 1/7/2014, 12:08 PM
GUNSMITH - 1/7/2014, 12:13 PM
SuperDude001 - 1/7/2014, 12:33 PM
JorL5150 @ They did show regenerations in the classic series, it just looked different due to the technology of the time.

John Hurt is not a retconned First Doctor, did you not watch the anniversary special? Or pay any to any of the news around it? He is the Ninth Regeneration of the Timelord that is the Doctor (but did not go by the name of The Doctor, therefore is known as The War Doctor and not included in the fans numbering system). He the one that endured the Time War after Eighth Doctor, and after that was finisihed that lead to the regeneration into the Ninth Doctor (Christopher Eccleston).

Peter Capaldi here is the Twelfth Doctor, but technically the 13th incarnation of the timelord that is the Doctor, and on the 14th regeneration of the timelord. This is because as we said before The War Doctor doesn't count in the numbering and 10 used a regeneration to heal himself but did not change appearance. He is still The Twelfth Doctor.
