Honestly from what I knew beforehand about this due to the casting news and story details and just reading the first summary of Paul's character and his arc, doesn't the entire premise of Dune just falls literally and almost fittingly into that trope of the "white saviour" thing?

I hope Villeneuve can make it not so clearly like that and makes it compelling. Because well, it does sound like it.

@NinnesMBC - The hell's wrong with you? Dune was written in 1965. So, a "white savior" is not so out of place.

@bropous - Yeah not so out of place, in 1965

@bropous - Just that the plot isn’t either the most original premise compared to other works of fiction in that area, the fact that the Fremen's problems are all saved and handle once someone that is not even one of them and comes from a privileged background goes to become their only one hope (the “chosen one”) and turns out to be the best of them. It’s just hard to ignore in today’s age, that is what I meant.

@NinnesMBC - I'm not really getting where you are coming from here.

Of course the plot isn't the most original premise, because the idea of the savior from afar, the Lisain al'Gaib, The Voice from the Outer World, is a VERY common thread through MANY epic stories of heroes. The ancient myths of the very gods were prime examples. The Annunaki. The Hindu gods and the vishmanyas.

I just don't think that the plot can really be written off in such a simplistic dismissal. And, the plot does not just stop at the end of Dune, nor the journey of the Fremen, nor of Arrakis. And with the prequels and sequels, the plot thickens even more.

The OG Dune film is...flawed but I like parts of it.

@Rothwilder - Toto did the music. Brian Eno did the "Prophecy" theme.

But the movie itself was a total load of dingo's kidneys.

The hype is real. Cast is great and Denis is directing. Can't wait to see Javier Bardem as Stilgar. Let's hope they stay true to the books. After the devasting TLJ this is all I can hope for cinema-wise.

Also glad to hear that Brian Herbert, son of Frank Herbert, is on as an consultat of some sorts. He keeps us fans updated through Twitter on what's going.

"I've said many times to DUNE fans that good things are happening behind the scenes, and details will come out in due course. I'm saying that again now, and this time there is a LOT MORE going on, and it's really exciting. In the fantastic DUNE universe, great things are coming."

"Seems like it's about time for some DUNE news.🙄🙌🥳 Here it is: Everything is moving forward, with progress every day. Thanks for being patient, or even impatient, and remaining avid fans. You will be happy."

@Luke91 - As for casting the Emperor. Colin Firth, Ralph Fiennes, Gary Oldman or perhaps Christian Bale.

@Luke91 - All great actors, but I think they should go a bit younger. The Emperor should be the opposite of Harkonnen; handsome, elegant, though with some gravity and menace to him. Thus my Jude Law pick. But Oldman would have been an awesome Harkonnen. Skarsgard has a real creepiness to him (see The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) though, so I think he'll be good. Maybe Stellan's son Alexander could work for the Emperor too?

@BestAtWhatIDo - Yeah I agree. Imo both Bale and Firth can play an elegante yet menacing. I don't know about Jude Law. Sure he's good but I want something else to be honest. Fassbender could also work. Just writing about this is exciting. :D

I'm a "Swede" and I dont see Alexander Skarsgård as Shaddam. Not really a fan of his. :/

The cast and crew on this are all pretty good and definitely get my attention, even if I know jack shit about the source material (although this listicle was very usefull)
