ELEKTRA Screenwriter & Guillermo del Toro Working On PACIFIC RIM 2 Script

While promoting his new FX television series The Strain Guillermo del Toro told Buzzfeed that he has been secretly working on a script for Pacific Rim 2 with X-Men: The Last Stand screenwriter Zak Penn. He even shares a few details.

Buzzfeed recently chatted with director Guillermo del Toro about his upcoming television series The Strain, which will premiere on FX. During their discussion Buzzfeed asked him about the possibility of another Pacific Rim film. “I’m working very, very hard with Zak Penn ("The Incredible Hulk"),” he told Buzzfeed. “We’ve been working for a few months now in secret. We found a way to twist it around. Travis Beacham [co-writer of the first film, now working on Fox’s Hieroglyph] was involved in the storyline and now I’m writing with Zak because Travis has become a TV mogul.”

At this time, Legendary Pictures has not given Pacific Rim 2 the greenlight. In March, Legendary CEO Thomas Tull told Collider, "It did north of 400 million dollars globally and both the home video sales and the merchandise have way over-indexed, so it seems like fans really loved the world. So we’re going to sit down with Guillermo and as long as we think it’s authentic and there’s something to say, we’re certainly open to it."

As for the script, del Toro revealed that Jaeger pilots, Raleigh Becket (Charlie Hunnam) and Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi), are involved in the storyline. Clearly, that means it is a sequel and not a prequel as many had speculated it might be. “Some people were wondering if we were going to do the prequel. I was never interested in doing that first wave of invasion,” del Toro said. He concluded with this spirited message about Pacific Rim 2: “I’m going for very new, very crazy ideas on the second one, which are very different from the first one — but you will get really great spectacle.”

PACIFIC RIM SYNOPSIS - When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes-a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)-who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

Pacific Rim was directed by Guillermo del Toro, from a script written by Travis Beacham. The cast includes Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day, Ron Perlman, Max Martini, Robert Kazinsky, Clifton Collins, Jr., Burn Gorman, Larry Joe Campbell, Diego Klattenhoff, and Brad William Henke. Now available on DVD & Blu-ray!

JoJo1982 - 6/7/2014, 6:06 PM

TheRationalNerd - 6/7/2014, 6:09 PM
I'd rather have a Hellboy 3. Pacific Rim wasn't all at to me. Good entertainment though! :)
Desrow - 6/7/2014, 6:10 PM
Zak Penn?

BigChuter - 6/7/2014, 6:11 PM
Hey if Zak Penn's writing it then it should be great. He wrote Avengers, after all.
ruadh - 6/7/2014, 6:13 PM
Well that's cool...it was fun and almost mindless. Deserves a sequel.
ATrueHero1987 - 6/7/2014, 6:13 PM
It was all good until it said Zak Penn is involved.lol
SageMode - 6/7/2014, 6:13 PM
Zak Penn? Oh boy
ATrueHero1987 - 6/7/2014, 6:14 PM
@BigChuter he wrote the avengers but NOT the one we saw on the big screen.
SageMode - 6/7/2014, 6:15 PM

Zak Penn's script for The Avengers was tossed aside and Whedon did a complete rewrite.
OpticBlastWins - 6/7/2014, 6:18 PM
I unerstand the hate but Pacific Rim was exactly what it was meant to be. Massive CGI fight scenes with decent character development
batz11 - 6/7/2014, 6:20 PM
I liked it, cool with a sequel...
nikgrid - 6/7/2014, 6:23 PM
Zak Penn? This is GOOD news?
TheDesertGorilla - 6/7/2014, 6:25 PM
Oh no, not another one.
wbrowning79 - 6/7/2014, 6:26 PM
Well... I'm upset.
BigChuter - 6/7/2014, 6:28 PM
Yeah I was joking about him writing Avengers. It still bugs me that his name is in the credits, if I'm not mistaken, before Joss's for the screenplay. I guess that must have been some sort of legal thing where they had to give him credit for, as far as we know, smearing diarrhea on a shred of cardboard and submitting it as a draft, because they hired him.
GeekyCheekyChic - 6/7/2014, 6:29 PM
Ha...as if the first script was anything to brag about now they get the writer of two of the most horrid scripts ever.
Cross Over with GODZILLA- that will electrify both franchises.
Abary - 6/7/2014, 6:30 PM

Abary - 6/7/2014, 6:31 PM
I like The Incredible Hulk though...
LaputaHeir - 6/7/2014, 6:32 PM
The first film suffered from bad writing/dialog.
And who better to help Del Toro fix the problem of bad writing/dialog than the screenwriter of Elektra, right?
Pasto - 6/7/2014, 6:33 PM
Screw PR 2, give me Godzilla 2 dammit!
Neek2086 - 6/7/2014, 6:38 PM
Del Toro.... Where the [frick] is Justice league Dark?? I rather you do a hellboy 3.. Not saying I didn't like PR, a sequel is just not necessary when u can utilize your time with something everyone wants to see.. He might just abandon this too
Phronesis - 6/7/2014, 6:39 PM

Pacific Rim is one of those movies that shouldn't have a franchise. The first one is horrid.
dethpillow - 6/7/2014, 6:43 PM
wow, this seems so strange to me that Del Toro would really be into making another one. but if he is... then cool, that's where his actually unmeasurable amounts of talent will go to.

but it's a shame for us, i think.

i know a lot of people love Pacific Rim, but i didn't feel it.

i can imagine a sequel having more to do with the weird world that started developing around these Kaiju incidents. like that was the part of the movie that i thought was really cool.

for example when the one guy goes to that black market dealer of artifacts for an intact brain. that really reminded me of Hellboy, kinda. and i dug that.

i just didn't like all the stuff and time they spent around the pilot guy and his whole deal. which was basically the movie, i guess. but i'd love to see a Pacific Rim 2 that was told more from the point of view of someone in this world, just living.

Monsters kinda did that.

if i was being greedy, i'd force Del Toro to work on Thor 3. but i know he doesn't want to. so i would say ok, u can work on New 52 Animal Man instead...

and if he didn't seem to like that, then i'd say... ok. go work on Justice Leage Dark, and he's already said he likes that.
dethpillow - 6/7/2014, 6:44 PM
actually, i just wish he would fall in love with Hellboy again and make the third one.

Hellboy is the best thing he's ever done. i wish he was back into it.
Nick56 - 6/7/2014, 6:47 PM
huh first PR was lousy. I mean it wasn't even that fun, basically Transformers all over again
Ramiel - 6/7/2014, 6:48 PM
Can we get a Hellboy 3 instead? A Pan's Labyrinth sequel would be nice as well.
yonny616 - 6/7/2014, 6:55 PM
Pacific Rim/Godzilla crossover! Give it to me NAOW!
Jollem - 6/7/2014, 6:55 PM
nice! pacific rim rocked
SageMode - 6/7/2014, 6:57 PM
What's a manga cartoon? Lol.
Scorpion8125 - 6/7/2014, 7:00 PM
That piece of shit is getting a sequel????

Kinda like when FOX made FF2...

and is gonna make reboot FF3....

POOP alert!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Goji54 - 6/7/2014, 7:03 PM
This movie was too much fun! I want something dark and depressing, like 9/11. Man of Steel 2 is what I really can't wait for!
Neek2086 - 6/7/2014, 7:07 PM
Like I SAID hellboy 3 would be nice
Reasonnnn - 6/7/2014, 7:09 PM
@Wertham Preach brother. Lot of people here don't understand how Hollywood works. :(
Reasonnnn - 6/7/2014, 7:10 PM
GDT would do Hellboy 3 if Legendary and Universal are interested in backing the right amount of budget.
VISIONaryNPa - 6/7/2014, 7:10 PM
ekk. Zack Penn..
