First Look At Johnny Depp & Morgan Freeman In Wally Pfister's TRANSCENDENCE

Entertainment Weekly has posted the first official images from Wally Pfister’s sci-fi thriller, Transcendence. The film stars: Johnny Depp, Rebecca Hall, Cillian Murphy and Morgan Freeman.

Dr. Will Caster (Johnny Depp) is the foremost researcher in the field of Artificial Intelligence, working to create a sentient machine that combines the collective intelligence of everything ever known with the full range of human emotions. His highly controversial experiments have made him famous, but they have also made him the prime target of anti-technology extremists who will do whatever it takes to stop him. However, in their attempt to destroy Will, they inadvertently become the catalyst for him to succeed—to be a participant in his own transcendence. For his wife Evelyn (Rebecca Hall) and best friend Max Waters (Paul Bettany), both fellow researchers, the question is not if they can…but if they should. Their worst fears are realized as Will’s thirst for knowledge evolves into a seemingly omnipresent quest for power, to what end is unknown. The only thing that is becoming terrifyingly clear is there may be no way to stop him.

TRANSCENDENCE - directed by Wally Pfister, from a screenplay written by Jack Paglen. Christopher Nolan and his wife Emma Thomas are Executive Producers. The cast includes: Johnny Depp Paul Bettany, Rebecca Hall, Kate Mara, Cillian Murphy, Clifton Collins, Jr., and Morgan Freeman. In theaters and IMAX on April 18.

It is great to see Depp not in some funky costume for once!
TheRationalNerd - 12/12/2013, 9:41 AM
Looks very interesting. Seeing Depp on those screens reminds me of how interesting it would have been to see him as the riddler! lol

Anyway, I love Nolan's movies and I can't wait to check this one out! I think he has a better feel for this one than he did with the last Dark knight film. His wife really wanted him to get away from the world of Batman. Glad to see he's back at his original craft. :)
TheDpool - 12/12/2013, 9:53 AM
Depp always impresses me when he looks like himself remember The Astronauts Wife? He was a freaky bastard in that.
sinchsw - 12/12/2013, 9:57 AM
Um, TheBlackNerd, check your nerdiness. This is not a Nolan movie.
RichardBoldly - 12/12/2013, 9:57 AM
Nolan is only producing it, @TheBlackNerd.
marvelstudios - 12/12/2013, 9:59 AM
Depp I think is pretty overrated. But he was awesome in Donnie Brasco.
ALmazing - 12/12/2013, 10:00 AM
@TheBlackNerd-Wally Pfister is the director but he was Nolan's cinematographer for the Dark Knight Trilogy and in many ways responsible for the look of those films so I can see how they'll be some comparisons.

Depp's career is DEAD. He only stood out in Pirates movies.

Pretty good cast. Cillian Murphy needs to get some bigger roles.
I could see him as a great Reed Richards, if it was a great script. He's also got a weird quality to him that would fit a 'mutie' role.

And maybe the guy who played Scarecrow would be a great Joker.
TheRebellion - 12/12/2013, 10:14 AM
That synopsis is freaking dope! Jonny Depp's career is dead....WTF?
McFarlaneFan - 12/12/2013, 10:17 AM
@SunfireUrA55 Lone Ranger sucked. What could Depp have done to save it?
Haven't seen Dark Shadows but that was an idea few people wanted to see.
Depp still has the Pirates successes, AIW, and other films to prove if he's in the right film he can make it a hit.
There is not one actor who ever lived who could've turned shit (Lone Ranger) into gold.

Depp needs to mix it up a bit and play a non comedic real world villain of some kind in some sort of low budget film. Sometimes actors get locked into good guy roles for so long they lose their edge.
RDJ needs to play some truly evil, real World bad guy also. He's starting to become stale.
Grayson7954 - 12/12/2013, 10:17 AM
@mcfarlanefan, you say cillian murphy needs bigger roles, then you say "maybe the guy who played scarecrow"....cillian murphy is the guy who played scarecrow....was that just a typo? haha sorry just confused
Greengo - 12/12/2013, 10:23 AM
Lawmower Man Part Duex
KrazyForKomix - 12/12/2013, 10:26 AM
"TRANSCENDENCE?!?" Really? Elysium, Oblivion, Gravity, Reality, Trance, and now Transcendence? Talk about your lazy marketing dept.
McFarlaneFan - 12/12/2013, 10:28 AM
@Grayson7954 What I'm saying is that Murphy, who to some would be "The guy who played Scarecrow" would be a great Joker. So that's why I phrased it that way. I was stepping into the perspective of others.
Crane was a nice part for him but he should be doing bigger stuff now. The guy is awesome. His brief part in Tron 2 was even awesome.
He was hardly in Inception but at least Nolan had him in it.
Murphy is the type of guy who could do parts like Batman great like in his audition from a decade ago but instead we get the 'bankable' Ben Affleck.

SkunkApe1 - 12/12/2013, 10:29 AM
Kind of like "Lawn Mower Man"
campblood - 12/12/2013, 10:31 AM
sounds interesting
Nivekian - 12/12/2013, 10:34 AM
Sound like Lawnmower Man
RexDartEskimoSpy - 12/12/2013, 10:42 AM
This is a secret biopic of Steve Jobs, isn't it? And in the end it turns out he was a robot the whole time! And Morgan Freeman was totally in on it and lied to all his colleagues but everyone trusted him cause he's Morgan Freeman.

@SunfireUrA55 Get real please, Depp is still one of the most popular and biggest stars in hollywood and if linning up high profile projects with big studios and big names means his career is dead then yes his career is sooo dead! BTW he stood out in lots of movies other than Pirates.
TheRationalNerd - 12/12/2013, 11:00 AM
@sinchsw @RichardBoldly and @ALmight

Lmboo! You all should see my face right now...smh I'm too derped out right now. For some reason I believe I got Interstellar and Transcendence mixed up. It does have the Nolan look to it so I guess that's how I got it confused. I just skipped identifying the director and went straight to the pics...Ha! Really appreciate it though fellas!
J0RELLC00LJ - 12/12/2013, 11:54 AM
D'oh, Greengo & SkunkApe1 beat me to it. Still will wanna see it for the cast alone.
TheOneAboveAll - 12/12/2013, 12:15 PM
So it has become pretty standard for Morgan Freeman to be in the movie if it is a sci-fi movie. He has become a staple of the genre in the past few years.
juwono - 12/12/2013, 7:32 PM
this movie is directed by Wally Pfister, he is the DOP (director of photography) for almost all nolan's film, he really got good taste, and this is his debut movie directing it, i very much looking forward to this one! :)
MightyZeus - 12/12/2013, 11:47 PM
This reminds me of a Nolan film.
manofmidgard - 12/13/2013, 1:25 AM
hmmm, almost didn't recognize depp without makeup. then I saw the foppish hairdo. yep, that's him.

no, this doesn't seem like a Nolan film, it actually looks like it has the potential to be good.

also, is it me, or does wally pfister seem like a porn star name? yikes.
manofmidgard - 12/13/2013, 1:27 AM
how do you pronounce pfister anyway? pee-fister? pfff-fister? just plain ole fister? puh-fister? pister? there is no good way to pronounce it. lol
onlyme - 12/13/2013, 5:32 AM
I agree that Cillian is doing parts below his level of talent. At least that's what he seems to go for in these Hollywood big budget movies. He obviously likes working with Christopher Nolan and vice versa. It's contradictory though because he'll take on a massive challenge like a one man play on a huge stage in central London (and New York) which must be incredibly scary. I get the impression that he'll only take risks when he knows and trusts the Director/Producer.
