After much speculation, the first real reactions for Ang Lee's mysterious action/thriller Gemini Man are finally in and the early word seems to be increasingly positive, with critics hailing it as a technical marvel with wild action sequences that should absolutely be seen on the biggest screens imaginable.

While the plot is said to be relatively straightforward, Ang Lee's expert direction, the high-stakes action and an incredible performance from its 2x Academy Award-nominated leading man Will Smith seem to more than make up for any possible shortcomings the story may have. A few critics also single out Mary Elizabeth Winstead for giving a strong performance her first true action role, which should make this a perfect appetizer for her big leading role in next year's Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn).

With just under a month to go, we should be hearing a whole lot more about Gemini Man in the coming weeks, but this positive early buzz is definitely good news for a film that's flown somewhat under the radar these past few months.

I have a feeling this film will not be well received at the box office.

"this movie is going to suck"
"Will Smith is washed"
"Looks generic"

I for one don't care about critical reception and this movie could suck but the way everyone treated this film before it came out because it seems cool to talk about Will like he's a bad actor. It's beyond me

@regularmovieguy - agreed. His projects leave a little to be desired but his talent can't be denied.

Some of the projects he's done I've thought were better than the masses like seven pounds but no one can deny after earth was terrible I can admit that lol

@Forthas - Netflix showed this at a children’s hospital, apparently it’s a tearjerker...

@Se4M4NSt4ine - Seems like it is geared toward children. Based on the trailer I can see there will be emotional beats to the series. Mildly curious about this and will more than likely check it out!

@Forthas - yeah took me a few weeks after it was in development to realise it was based of a comic book!

Honestly the action does look pretty dope. The plot doesn’t look anything amazing but the technical aspects....

I’ll be watching it in theater.

The trailers were bad but Ang Lee's a great film-maker, so I was hoping for a good movie. It's also the only original film with a budget over $100m released all year, so hopefully it does well

What is the budget? 150?

Hell ya, bud. Planning on either tomorrow or Friday afternoon.

Only working a half day Friday so I’ll probably catch it then. What about you?

@regularmovieguy - Yeah, seeing it this weekend for sure. My most anticipated of the rest of the year outside of The Irishman and The Lighthouse. You saw the trailer for that new Mark Ruffalo/Todd Haynes film? Looks kind of meh
regularmovieguy
regularmovieguy - 9/18/2019, 9:08 PM
@tmp3

Hell ya. Can’t wait for Lighthouse.

Yeah, we’ll see about Dark Waters. The performances look good - story looks very conventional in terms of whistleblower movies.

That’s my city though I’ll be there opening night 👍🏻 My boy actually snapped a pic of Ruffalo at a coffee shop downtown.

Yeah nothing about this movie looks good at all. What’s up with Ang Lee’s recent obsession over using high frame rates the trailer almost gave me a headache from watching it. The John Wick films have proved you don’t need fancy high frame rates or 3D to make a good action film worth watching. It just looks so unnatural the way Ang Lee filmed this and am sure it would look much worse on a smaller screen. It’s all a cheap unnecessary gimmick that is not going to age well just like how Avatar was hyped up.

@PsychoManiacJacky - None of the trailers play at a high frame rate, so I don't know how you got a headache from watching it.
