James Cameron Reveals His Plot Idea For A Fourth AVATAR Movie

James Cameron Reveals His Plot Idea For A Fourth AVATAR Movie

Despite recent reports that Cameron is only working on two sequels to his science fiction epic Avatar right now, the director has revealed his idea for a fourth installment in the series which would serve as a prequel to the original movie.

Recently, producer Jon Landau confirmed that director James Cameron is only currently working on two sequels to his box office smash Avatar, and that a fourth film won't be filmed around the same time as the other sequels. That's not to say that a fourth Avatar movie won't happen, however. While promoting the new collector's edition of Titanic, Cameron was asked by MTV News for an update on the sequels, which he is currently writing. He then reveals that he has an idea for a fourth movie in the series, which would be a prequel exploring "the early expeditions of Pandora". For Cameron's comments on Avatar 2 and 3 (which will be shot back-to-back), click the link below.

"I have an idea for a fourth," Cameron told the site. "I haven't really put pen to paper on it, but basically it goes back to the early expeditions of Pandora, and kind of what went wrong with the humans and the Na'vi and what that was like to be an explorer and living in that world."

"Because when we drop in, even in the first film in 'Avatar 1,' as it will be known in the future, we're dropping into a process that's 35 years in to a whole colonization," Cameron stated. "That will complete an arc and if that leads into more, we'll start, not imitating 'Star Wars,' but it's a logical thing to do because we'll have completed the thematic arc by the end of three. The only thing left to do is go back to see what it was like on those first expeditions and create some new characters that then become legacy characters in later films. It's a plan."

Do you want to see more than two Avatar sequels from James Cameron? The first sequel will be released in theaters 2015 or later.

I wasn't a huge fan of Avatar but I would be interested in seeing a prequel.
jessepostal - 9/8/2012, 12:13 PM
He's gonna have to retire after finishing the third one! Titanic on blu ray looks sick, if you like the movie def go get it
imnotahero - 9/8/2012, 12:13 PM
Avatar wasn't that good. Sequels aren't needed. Why don't you focus on one movie at a time Cameron.
CPBuff22 - 9/8/2012, 12:18 PM
He better come up with some amazing new technology or these won't do as good as the first.
Wildaniel - 9/8/2012, 12:19 PM
Avatar is a completely OVERRATED film!
Oxbow - 9/8/2012, 12:20 PM
Prequel sounds Potentially good. I hope they explore na'vi culture and myths
whoelsebutkevin - 9/8/2012, 12:22 PM

Ahhh I want to get that but due to funds cannot until this Wednesday.
CapFanLex005 - 9/8/2012, 12:22 PM
I have never seen it
rubbish78 - 9/8/2012, 12:22 PM

NerdyGeek - 9/8/2012, 12:22 PM
I actually just watched Avatar on Blu-ray last night, good film, brilliant third act! Looking forward to the sequel...
RedLanternsFan - 9/8/2012, 12:23 PM
That movie F-ing sucked big time
smerf1 - 9/8/2012, 12:23 PM

He is.
Facade - 9/8/2012, 12:24 PM
I was more than a little bored by Avatar. The 3D is what sold it for me. That said, I'll still watch the sequel and maybe the 3rd if part 2 holds up. Meh to the prequel, though. Maybe I'll be a fan once they're done.
jessepostal - 9/8/2012, 12:29 PM
@whoelse, it's worth the wait bud, looks great, sounds great and only 30 bucks for the 3d blu ray collection, glad to see there dropping prices already
duncboy - 9/8/2012, 12:31 PM
So it sounds like the prequel(s) would explore Neytiri's great grandfather and the other Toruk Maktos - which could be cool.
Roscoe182 - 9/8/2012, 12:39 PM
couldn't stand this film and its copy paste story..

looked good tho ..
jessepostal - 9/8/2012, 12:39 PM
Your getting mad at a director for planning his upcoming work in advance? I'd hate to be the guy who sets up your retirement plan
RexDartEskimoSpy - 9/8/2012, 12:41 PM
Avatar looked amazing, with an interesting setup, but absolutely predictable, cookie cutter plot and dull acting. (Like every other Jim Cameron movie.) No wonder it made so much money. But Cameron better get cracking if he wants to cash in before the American movie-going sheep lose interest.
jessepostal - 9/8/2012, 12:44 PM
Thanks bud:)
Ranger14 - 9/8/2012, 12:46 PM
He'll need to deliver something much more than visuals in the sequels for me to be interested in watching.

I don't know how anyone can sit through watching the Titanic more than once, but to each their own.
ComfortablyNumb - 9/8/2012, 12:47 PM
Avatar was ok. Overrated in my book.
Nubase - 9/8/2012, 12:51 PM
the whole reason as we all know the success of the movie was down to the 3D tech, l watched it and the effects was incredible but the story was nothing new.

The sequels they are shooting back to back better have a strong story cos the effects will not amaze us as the first one but the movies will be a blockbuster and do very well at the box office.
MJPETTY7 - 9/8/2012, 12:56 PM
We don't even need a second one and he's talking about a fourth? UGH!
OcciferPing - 9/8/2012, 12:57 PM
Count me in. While the 1st had it's flaws, that's pretty much with any 1st movie. It's never going to be your best one. Look at all of the 1st films of any franchise and most of the time, they aren't as good as their sequels (not saying some sequels aren't absolutely horrible *cough* Spider-man 3). I don't really hold the 1st one up to such a high standard.

However, with sequels, I definitely do since they should know better and have fixed those flaws and evolve the story even more. With Sully now being a Na'vi, I hope it isn't as "Pocahantasy" as the 1st one. But seeing a prequel to how this all started I'm definitely stoked for. I hope Cameron gets around to doing it.
Maia87 - 9/8/2012, 12:58 PM
AVATAR sucked! It's a rip off of "Call Me Joe", a novella written in 1957. It's a story of a paraplegic man whose mind remotely controls a blue-skinned alien body on a distant planet.
RexDartEskimoSpy - 9/8/2012, 1:01 PM
@ Maia87:

Don't forget A Princess Of Mars and Pocahontas!
Nubase - 9/8/2012, 1:23 PM

l agree. l was told about this book as well but this is James Cameron we are talking about, and he gets away with just about anything.

HarveyDent88 - 9/8/2012, 1:23 PM
No thanks.
l0rdleg0las - 9/8/2012, 1:24 PM
I don't even want to see a 2nd one of these overrated pieces of shit movie
Nubase - 9/8/2012, 1:27 PM
James Cameron needs to finish off the Terminator movies, that was the movie that made him in the first place, l would be more excited if he was to do that then another avatar.

l heard the film rights go back to him in 2017 l think, cos thats one franchase that needs to end on a strong note.
95 - 9/8/2012, 1:27 PM
Good movie. Painful for the eyes. Maybe 60fps will fix that? I'm not really excited for these sequels at all. While I liked Pandora, the Na'vi bored me.
DrDoom - 9/8/2012, 1:30 PM
I really like this movie. It wasn't a masterpiece (District 9 stole 2009 for me), but I would be up for a sequel. While it's great that James Cameron is planning ahead, he shouldn't be talking about it to the public without concrete work being completed.
GodzillaKart - 9/8/2012, 1:39 PM
I enjoyed the first movie...not really sure that I need another one.
SonOfStarKiller - 9/8/2012, 1:44 PM
Say what you want but the man who gave us some of the most significant sci-fi & action movies of all time is far from a hack. Regardless if you hated Avatar (hate which seems to spew mostly from fanboys) the man changed the way we watch movies. And it's not the first time he's done it. Respect, whether you like it or not, is due.
datNAMEtho - 9/8/2012, 1:45 PM
Avatar was nice, looked fantastic. I'm very curious at the 60 FPS he's gonna use. The CGI is going to look pretty darn real!

I just hope Cameron puts in a bit more plot. No wait, an actual plot, Avatar is a very thin film. But well.. Everybody loves Pocahontas right.
Supes17 - 9/8/2012, 1:45 PM
Lol this cracked me up

I liked Avatar. The story didn't impress me AT ALL...But the effects were amazing.

Overrated, yes.. but I really don't understand why some people say the movie was terrible. It was ok
damntree - 9/8/2012, 2:04 PM
It's really cool and all to hate on Avatar. I love how everyone these days is some wanna-be pretentious film [foo foo]. Avatar was a fun movie and visually amazing.

Pocahontas is one of my favorites as well. I love when John Smith has his conscious transferred into his dead brothers native american avatar that the pilgrim scientists made. Then the pilgrims use him to learn about the native americans so they can harvest a rare expensive metal and send it back to England.

Those dirty pilgrims then chopped down the gargantuan tree the natives lived in that was above the rare metal. John smith loves the natives too much so he bonds mentally a giant bird to become a legendary figure they revere to lead them in an effort to defend the spirit of North America from being destroyed. The spirit of North America also stores all the memories of the natives and they can access it at any time by plugging in their organic usb cable.

In the final desperate moment of the battle the spirit of North America sends all the animals to help beat those evil pilgrims back. The Natives and John Smith force the bad pilgrims to go back to England and then John Smith has his conscious permanently transferred into his dead brothers native avatar via the spirit of North America.

Yep, Pocahontas was a wild movie. I'm glad I'm not a giant retarded [frick]ing idiot that simplifies the plot so I can shoe horn it into a similar plot and then hate on the movie because I'm hip.
Nick56 - 9/8/2012, 2:04 PM
The movie was visually stunning but overall a terrible film. I found it boring and unoriginal. Plus the third act made about as much sense as the ewoks defeating the empire in ep.6
Ultimatespideyfan - 9/8/2012, 2:08 PM
Avatar was a success for being the first succesful 3D movie. Now that 3D is decaying, how will it perform in 2015? I bet not as good.
Grodd87 - 9/8/2012, 2:24 PM
This movie has already been told it is called Pocahontas with blue people
